Further education with the School of Adventure Studies

Our one-year further education courses can prepare you for the next step, either into employment or further study: • NQ Outdoor Adventure (NC Sport and Fitness) is a SCQF level 5 equivalent course. It is based in Broadford on the Isle of Skye giving access to the world famous Cuillin mountains and fantastic locations for paddlesports in sea and freshwater. This course will encourage the growth of personal confidence and competence in both practical and academic areas.

• NQ Outdoor Leadership is a SCQF level 6 equivalent course and it is based in Fort William. This course will build on existing academic skills and will enable you to develop and share your practical competence by learning about leadership. These two courses open many doors. While they are focused on giving you the knowledge and practical qualifications to gain employment in the outdoor industry, they also allow progression to degree level study either within the School of Adventure Studies or elsewhere. Sean Mackenzie

I was 17 when I left school in Aberdeen. I’d done Duke of Edinburgh award and always enjoyed biking and paddle sports. I came to Broadford in 2017 to study Outdoor Adventure. It was a good move because I was young, first time away from home and needing to build up my academic and practical skills. We were a small class which meant good friendships were made and lots of support and encouragement from lecturers. I learned the importance of deadlines when studying, how to navigate the UHI online world, achieved several NGB qualifications and built up my confidence.

I felt prepared for my move to Fort William in 2018 to study NQ Outdoor Leadership. On this course, the academic study continues and I felt well able to deal with that and was able to focus on improving my mountain biking and water sport activities. A big part of the course is teaching you how to lead and develop a professional mind-set that is needed when you are responsible for others.

I have had 2 work placements: a week working with a rafting company in Iceland at the end of Outdoor Adventure and then a 2 month placement in Spain with Sierra Mountain Bikes at the end of Outdoor Leadership. Both were great experiences and I learned a lot as well as having a good time!

So 2019 and I knew I wanted to stay in the School of Adventure Studies but what degree to study? I was torn between Adventure Tourism Management and Adventure Performance and Coaching. I opted for the first as I thought long term the management side of things would be useful if I wanted to do freelance instructing.

I am 2 months in to my first year and so far all is good. We still do a lot of practical outdoor training, combined with academic study preparing you for employment in the industry as a professional. You learn about how to apply leadership on the practicals and how important it is.

There are lots of outdoor clubs you can get involved in. It’s a great way to meet folk and build up networks. The lecturers and external training providers are keen to share valuable information and are always ready to help and support.

NQ Outdoor Adventure (NC Sport and Fitness)

This introductory course will improve your competence in a range of outdoor adventure activities based in a world class location. You will gain essential practical experience and extend your learning in challenging environments. You will receive tuition from highly skilled and active adventure-sector practitioners who will give you the tools to succeed in mountain, river and sea environments. It will lay the foundations for a career in the outdoors by giving you the skills and dedication required to progress on to our Certificate in Outdoor Leadership or to climb the National Governing Body award ladder in your chosen speciality. Areas covered: • anatomy and physiology • fitness, exercise and nutrition • environment and access • health and wellbeing • paddle-sports and team work • mountain sports and leadership • conservation and volunteering • mountain biking • core skills numeracy, ICT and

Entry requirements Applicants should have at least three Standard Grades at credit/general level or three National 4s or above or equivalent combination of both; a passion for the outdoors (mountain and water environments); a good level of fitness and the ability to swim at least 50 metres. All candidates will attend an interview, and if you do not meet all the entry requirements this can be discussed and your previous experience may still qualify you for entry to this course. NQ Outdoor Leadership

Do you love the challenge of outdoor adventure activities? This course based in our School of Adventure Studies combines theoretical (SQA units) with practical elements (National Governing Body Awards) to provide a qualification that will launch you onto a career path in the outdoor adventure sector. There is a work experience placement from April to early June (8 weeks) with opportunities to gain a placement with major adventure companies, including the possibility of an international placement with UK organisations. Adventure theory to adventure practice – the vocational link in our degree teaching

At the School of Adventure Studies we have built a strong reputation on a simple philosophy: that to understand adventure, you need to experience adventure, and to be a skillful employee and employer of the future, you need to practice the skills and develop as a practitioner as well as developing the critical thinking abilities of a graduate. Here, we offer you just that opportunity. All four degree programmes offer students a host of practical learning opportunities in a wide range of disciplines and activities at all levels of ability. We base it on a “credit” system of short courses, where some elements are mandatory and some are free for students to select and book onto. Mandatory elements may either be closely tied to the module teaching and assessment, or be core skills that we feel all graduates of our courses

must experience (such as summer and winter mountain skills and avalanche safety). You will also get the freedom to choose some short courses to suit your own needs. Practical activities available include work on personal skills training, developing specialist skills and expertise, coaching and leadership training and practice and certificated National Governing Body Awards and qualifications. Students need to meet

any stated pre-requisite experience for selected courses. We are situated in an area of outstanding wild natural beauty. Our team of lecturers and associate staff comprise some of the UK’s most experienced and qualified professionals in the field – you can expect to get the best possible training and assessment while you are here.

Adventure is at the heart of The School of Adventure Studies – we are passionate about the outdoors, and about understanding the professional pathways towards a career in the most rewarding and dynamic sector in the UK. Whatever your specialism or personal interest, we are set up to give you the skills and knowledge you need to inspire a lifetime’s career in the outdoors. So, what is adventure? When we use the word adventure, we’re usually talking about adventurous activities in the outdoor environment. However, adventure is more than just this. It can give you a fresh sense of perspective, novelty and awe, but it will also demand something from you, and the outcomes may be uncertain. It’s ok for an adventurous experience to create some apprehension: it is up to the adventurous spirit to develop the skills and experience to learn how and when to take that step. Adventures are about human endeavour, so we must always be aware of the importance of respect, companionship, ethical and sustainable practice to ensure we protect the values and the environment that is crucial to us. Adventure is also a journey of the self and a state of mind. If you are open to experience, then no matter how often you have travelled a certain path there is always something new to discover.

Why four different degree programmes? Our degree programme is broad because of the range of career specialities that the adventure sector offers. Whatever your interests, all our students will share the same common skills and knowledge and be adaptable to whatever direction their future career will take them. “If you choose a degree subject that fits your passions, you will love it and stick with it.” Marine and Coastal Tourism This degree is designed to equip students for the diverse employment possibilities in the Marine and Coastal Tourism sector. The global context of marine and coastal tourism puts the focus on marine resource management, marine conservation, and policy and legislation, as well as marine tourism guiding and coaching. Adventure Tourism Management | Adventure Performance and Coaching | Adventure Education These three programmes cover skills that are related but lead to different roles that an adventure professional might follow.

Adventure Pathways Scheme This scheme is built on a framework of shared modules in the three degrees – Adventure Tourism Management, Adventure Performance and Coaching and Adventure Education. Each degree has its own identity and focus but there are also important similarities: common ground, skills and knowledge that all adventure professionals must acquire in order to suceed. This common ground is what we call the Adventure Pathways Core and it is built into each of the three adventure degrees. Having this shared core allows flexibility and the option to transfer between degrees. If you begin by thinking that Adventure Tourism Management is for you but discover a passion for Adventure Education, that’s ok, there are options within the first two years to change course. Which one is right for me? Here is an analogy. You are needing new walking boots. How will you choose the right pair? The most important thing you should look for is not the colour, or even the brand – but the boot that fits the purpose. If the boots fit well, you will love them. If you choose a degree subject that fits your passions, you will love it and stick with it. We want you to have an amazing time here at the School of Adventure Studies, and take away an Honours degree to be proud of, as well as many essential skills to use for the rest of your life, many great memories and many lifelong friendships. About our Degrees

Entry requirements 3 Scottish Highers at grade C or above or 2 A levels at grade C or above. You are also recommended to hold a minimum of Standard Grade/Nat 5/GCSE English and Mathematics and be able to demonstrate your commitment to outdoor activities. Applicants with significant experience in outdoor activities will be considered providing they can demonstrate sufficient academic potential. You may be required to attend an interview. Successful applicants to ATM, AE and APC degree programmes will be required to complete a PVG Disclosure Check (paid for by college) and become PVG Scheme Members.

Advanced entry Joining at year 2 or 3 is possible from other higher education institutes, such as foundation degrees, or HNC/ HND courses by demonstrating equivalent prior learning with sufficient credit in the appropriate subject area (Recognition of Prior Learning-RPL). Additional Costs Additional costs occur both on entry and during your course. These could include professional body memberships, clothing and equipment, extracurricular courses and expeditions abroad. Check the School of Adventure Studies section of the college website.

Start date and venue September Fort William In all four degrees there is a blend of face-to-face lectures and tutorials in the classroom, with some teaching by video conference from other University of the Highlands and Islands campuses and online learning. There is also extensive practical learning. Full time: 42 hours a week for up to 4 years. Classroom contact time is normally 9 hours a week and this can be face to face lectures, video conference and online learning. The other hours are practical sessions and independent study.

We ask the Experts

Adele Pennington Adele Pennington is a mountaineering instructor, expedition leader, operations manager and organiser of expeditions around the world. Which adventure activities are you involved in, and how did you get to where you are now? Climbing and mountaineering are my focus. Initially I pursued a career in biochemistry and teaching. Both of which allowed me to acquire skills in analytical detail, education and teaching. I went through the Summer and Winter Mountain Leader scheme in my 20’s, followed by the Single Pitch Award and Mountaineering Instructors Award and had an active outdoor programme as a teacher. I decided to leave teaching and start to lead expeditions in order to be young enough to fulfil my own mountaineering ambitions and lead trips such as an Everest expedition. I also became operations manager for

Jagged Globe and more recently for my own company Adele Pennington Mountaineering. What skills do you think are most valuable in your role? When planning expeditions you must do detailed research and pay attention to detail, from having a reasonable objective, to costings, to answering client enquiries. Furthermore it is essential to have safety at the forefront of any expedition. What do you personally hold as core principles in your work in adventure tourism? My clients must have a safe expedition and the trip should exceed their expectations. Each participant’s needs must be met and they must understand what the expedition entails and are appropriately trained. Value for money is important but not at the expense of safety or client care.

What are the highlights of your work, and what motivates you? The highlights of my career have been to organise and lead successful expeditions that run like clockwork. My motivation comes from happy returning clients and a good variety and balance in my work. What do you think the future holds for adventure tourism? Adventure tourism is a growing business and within it there are a variety of roles. These roles can be from practitioner leading the adventure to administrator organising the event. Professionalism is so important in whatever aspect or role is taken on. What has been the most useful part of your education? The ability to communicate verbally with clients and take an interest in their needs. The ability to use an excel spreadsheet and to persevere with administrative tasks that are not straight forward!

Dave MacLeod Dave MacLeod is a world-renowned performer and author in rock and ice climbing; sports science; sports medicine and adventure film making. Which adventure activities are you involved in, and how did you get to where you are now? I climb at a high level in bouldering, sport climbing, rock climbing, ice climbing and alpinism and have climbed hundreds of new routes around the world. I’ve written two books on climbing performance and I am a blogger. I’ve also worked in the mountains as a filmmaker. What do adventure performance and adventure coaching mean to you? I’m pretty obsessed with every aspect of training and performance. My first book 9 out of 10 climbers make the same mistakes, is essentially a behavioural science book. I investigated what held amateur athletes back and found that it was

behavioural habits causing them to deviate from the principles of training. I am interested in the interface between scientific data and the way humans make use of it. This interface is where opportunities for performance breakthroughs are created or lost. What education have you had in coaching or sports science related areas? I have a degree in Physiology & Sports Science and a Masters in Exercise Science. It’s critical to follow new research, so I read a huge amount. Using new knowledge, I have smashed my personal bests in climbing. I also coach climbers: there is no substitute for observing their movement, habits and characteristics. Where do you find the ideas of coaching and sports science being useful to your professional practice? There isn’t an area where sports science understanding is not critical for practice. For example, the latest

research has developed nutritional strategies for all sorts of adventure sports applications. What are the highlights of your work, and what motivates you? My own self coaching is the highlight and most motivating aspect of my work. It’s always easiest to experiment with new ideas on yourself! Also writing two books and reading people’s stories on my blog. What do you think the future holds for adventure sports coaching? The development of adventure sports and the culture of performance within them blow my mind. The benefits adventure sports bring to wellbeing and public health are recognised and there will be more resources for study and research into performance and improved facilities. Adventure sports need leaders with expertise and there are great rewards for people with the imagination and rigour to take on that role.

Cameron Livingstone “Scotland is my home. I did a lot outdoor sports such as sailing, kayaking and hill climbing when I was at school. I choose to study Adventure Education because education is my real interest. I like teaching, I like learning and I like sharing my skills. I also know from experience how much difference this kind of education can make to a young person. The activities are a means to an end but not the end in itself. I can stay multi-skilled, learn about the philosophy of education and spend time outdoors teaching young people about the environment through activities on the ground. William Holland I joined this degree in 3rd year. I completed an HND Coaching and Sports Development in Perth College UHI and then transferred to Fort William to focus on Adventure Performance and Coaching. Both colleges are part of UHI so the style of teaching was similar but classes here are smaller and that means a more relaxed atmosphere with more contact with your lecturers. Moving was the right decision. We have a great choice in practical activities here and the “credit” system has enabled me to achieve a range of NGBs to improve my CV. The stand-out module last year was International Expedition Leadership which followed on from Planning International Expeditions. With lecturer support we were able to plan, implement and evaluate an expedition of our own devising. A group of us went to the Adirondack State Park in America and did a six day paddling expedition. What an amazing opportunity to have the freedom and ownership of the project. To plan entirety and then actually achieve it was brilliant.

Jenny Taylor Adventure Tourism Management is broad in what it covers and I knew I would benefit from the choices offered and discover my niche as I went along.

I have appreciated the different directions you can follow, especially in 2nd and 3rd year when you can choose modules that suit your interests.

The academic modules are a combination of social sciences, coaching therapy and skill acquisition as well as critical perspectives on tourism, marketing, management and adventure markets.

There are also fantastic opportunities to develop your practical skills and you have the chance to build links with local adventure businesses.

Angus Jenkins I like the flexibility of shared modules where you get to mingle with other SOAS students.

This degree can take you into the leisure or environmental sector and my interest in conservation and the marine environment has grown. I‘ve improved my practical skills on the water, picking up RYA and MCA certificates. It’s a great combination.

Kara Scott I have always loved the sea and this degree combines marine science with practical activities.

We cover a lot of ground: fishing industries, marine environment and current tourism trends while improving our practical water-based skills. It feels all encompassing.

Tim Jepson Tim Jepson (retired) was a trainer of teachers of outdoor and adventure education. The list of people whom he has taught and inspired as successful teachers and leaders in the sector is phenomenal, and in outdoor circles his name is short-hand for the highly influential course that he led. Which adventure activities are you involved in, and how did you get to where you are now? My main areas are: mountaineering; rock-climbing; kayaking and skiing. My interest began with my father and developed at university. I trained to be a Geography and Outdoor Activities teacher and worked as an instructor at the National Mountaineering Centre, Plas y Brenin. In my later career I lectured in Education at Bangor University. What skills do you think are most valuable to an adventure education practitioner? An adventure education practitioner needs to be able to read people's

emotions from body language, facial expression, voice tone and group interaction. They also need to be supportive of individuals throughout a range of emotional responses to adventurous situations, and be creative in finding ways to modify adventures in order to best meet changing circumstances. What did you personally hold as core principles in your work in adventure education? Learning to work towards outcomes which are uncertain is good practice for life; adventure is a process not an outcome; each adventure is unique to the individual who experiences it; adventures shared with other people are richer than those you have on your own; the outdoors is a great place to have adventures, but you can have adventures anywhere; lessons are learnt from adventures, whether the adventurer recognises them or not; adventures are best when initiated by the adventurers.

What have been the highlights of your work, and what are the key motivations? Although I have had many, wonderful adventures shared with energetic and enthusiastic trainee teachers, the true motivation for keeping going has come later when those trainees becomes teachers and tell you of the adventures they are having with their own pupils. That's true fulfilment! What do you think the future holds for adventure education? The need for adventure education to impact on young people's lives will never diminish. Adventurous experiences, physical, social and environmental, will become more important as our lives become increasingly technical, hectic and uncertain. What has adventure education taught you about yourself? To be open-minded and to never make assumptions - I'm still working on both of those!

Mark Carwardine Mark Carwardine is a zoologist, an outspoken conservationist, an award-winning writer, a TV and radio presenter, a widely published wildlife photographer, a best-selling author, a wildlife tour operator and leader, a lecturer, and a magazine columnist. Mark has a great interest in the oceans of the world and he understands the urgent need to protect the marine environment and the diverse species that inhabit it. His field guide Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises, is one of the bestselling natural history books of all

time. This is just one of over fifty books he has written on a variety of wildlife, travel and conservation subjects. A keen photographer, Mark has been Chairman of the Judging Panel of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition and he was selected as one of The World's 40 Most Influential Nature Photographers in Outdoor Photography magazine. Mark has worked in TV and radio for many years promoting discussion on a wide variety of wildlife, travel and conservation subjects.

He co-founded several wildlife-tour companies and he now runs his own wildlife and photography tours to unique destinations around the world. He continues to campaign tirelessly on issues of conservation and environment.

This unique course is the first of its kind in the UK, focusing on the many uses of the marine resource, and how tourism interacts with these. Examples are drawn from both the UK, and internationally. Theory and practice are integrated, with classroom based sessions on sustainable development, business management, climate and environment, and the scope and scale of the industry. This is underpinned with the opportunity to develop personal skills and leadership awards in a variety of activities, including sailing, powerboat, sea kayaking, surf, SUP, snorkelling and SCUBA, and coasteering. Practical sessions also include guiding and interpretation skills and a science based overview of these environments. Students have the opportunity to become involved in real development projects, as they happen, including working with the Lochaber Chamber of Commerce as Fort William welcomes the cruise ship industry, and the development of a new 80 berth marina at Corpach. There is also the chance to visit boat shows and other events around the UK, and to have regular contact with practicing sector professionals. Take the opportunity to put what you’ve learned in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year into practice by choosing this optional module in 3rd year. Expeditioning is part of our DNA at SOAS. An expedition is about more than just the physical journey - it's a way to explore new places and discover your own capabilities, as well as understanding the importance of environmentally and socially ethical travel. Whichever degree you study, expedition skills and experiences are key elements. With expert guidance and support from SOAS staff you will have inspirational and life changing experiences, gaining confidence and self-reliance. There will be a personal financial investment needed from you, but SOAS subsidise and support this.

Specialist focus:

2019 Expeditions Ardèche An 11 day expedition on the Ardeche river with light inflatable pack rafts. Aims were to research and explore the local opportunities within the Ardèche river system with a purpose of developing new and expanding existing routes for pack rafts while also observing the geological landscape.

Adirondack A self-supported 8 day canoe expedition in the wilderness environment of the Adirondack State Park, New York State, working in partnership with New York State University of Plattsburg. Malta Marine and Coastal Tourism students went on expedition to Malta, having established a working partnership with the ethical company Áetem. This German-based company aims to foster a community of environmentally minded sea-trekking professionals that promote the inherent benefits of the activity as well as its potential for engaging in marine conservation. Namibia This 6 day expedition undertook a survey of the boundary fence between the Namibrand nature reserve and the Namib-naukluft National Park in Namibia. The expedition covered 60km, of which over 45km where done on foot across sandy and gravel plains as well as mountains. The data collected will be

instrumental in Namibrand’s bid to have the whole 100+ kms of boundary fence removed. This would improve the ecology of the area and facilitate the movement of animals in the Nama-karoo and Namib deserts; two environments that are subjected to weather extremes, including frequent droughts.

Final year – time to create a lasting legacy Professional Adventure Project or Dissertation For many people setting out on a 4-year Honours degree, the final year may seem a long way off, but this pivotal year will provide you with an important head start, where you will be very much in the driving seat, taking ownership of your own final year project. Among your options you will have the choice to follow an academic research Dissertation or a Professional Adventure Project. The Professional Adventure Project is a new approach to the idea of research that is unique to SOAS – and brilliantly suited to the kind of career that you may be following – driven by innovation and creativity. Got a great idea, or see the need for a new product, or a new angle on the familiar, whatever your pathway? Here is your chance to roll up your

sleeves and create. With the help of our expert supervision, you’ll be free to research your idea, engage and lead others in it, and create a project that is unique to you – one that will leave a legacy for the sector. We have even built in scope for this idea to be a major new expedition or project abroad, perhaps inspired from your international expedition the previous year. Student projects are already attracting attention from national organisations such as the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and are emerging as real-world innovation and developments. Jess Leggat “ I am from Fortrose originally. I’ve always loved the outdoors and I came to West Highland College UHI because of the School of Adventure Studies (SOAS) and the degrees that it offers.

I wasn’t sure about what my eventual career goal would be but I knew I wanted to learn more about the adventure sector.

I studied Adventure Tourism Management for 2 years and then transferred to Marine and Coastal Tourism for a further two years, finally getting my degree in 2017. SOAS created the perfect example of outdoor education in action - learning through experiences and progressing with practical skills, in tandem with theory. We learned with fantastic coaches and guides which provided an excellent opportunity to network and understand what working as a freelancer was all about.

I was encouraged to be an independent learner- especially through the practical programme. Entry level NGB courses and introductory sessions were available all of which are essential for working in the industry.

More advanced levels required a lot of dedication and training but are so worthwhile. Support staff and SOAS lecturers were always near with help and support and joining West Highland College UHI is

like becoming part of a family, supportive and friendly and even now, as an alumni, I feel at home whenever I visit. When I graduated, I decided to stay in the Fort William area and build on all the skills and contacts I had made over

the previous four years. I am now a freelance instructor and work with several organisations. I provide paddlesports coaching and NGB qualifications to new students in SOAS and I have also worked for the last

year at the Outward Bound Trust in Loch Eil. I have set up my own company called Canù doing coaching and guiding and I hope this will grow and Canù will

become a provider for various outdoor awards and adventure activities. So many doors have opened for me as a result of my time with SOAS which have allowed me to create not just a

career but a life for myself where I get paid to be outdoors and share my passion with others.”
