Dear Parents, Pupils and Staff of Stanwell School, We should all be very proud of the individual and col-lective achievements contained in our Christmas News-letter. So many of our pupils are taking the opportunity to develop their skills and talents and this publication seeks to celebrate the successes our pupils and staff have attained through dedication and hard work. There are some outstanding examples of individual bril-liance and it is gratifying to see that several Stanwell pupils are Welsh and British international athletes. The students interviewed for their sporting, musical and dramatic abilities are excellent role models to their peers. As a school, we encour-age all of our pupils to excel and continually seek to offer enhanced provision, guidance and support in order for each student to achieve his or her potential. It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointments of Miss S Owen, Mr M Lewis and Mr J Mansfield as Assistant Head Teachers. Merry Christmas and many thanks to all who have played a role in Stanwell’s con-tinuing success this term. Mr A. Lewis Acting Head Teacher.

a bowler than a batter”, and that her cricketing

has allowed her to compete against other counties, Gloucestershire, for example. On followed Natalie Gill (Year 10 gymnast). Natalie was very modest – endearingly so, in fact; she reeled off her achievements – most notably a gold in the British Gymnastics Finals – and detailed her intensive training routine (four sessions a week, poor girl!) Nonetheless, she told me, she feels as though it is worth the effort. And I do not doubt her; only last week-end had she won a bronze for her perform-ance in a regional competition. The concluding interviewee was Matteo Holmes (Year 10 athlete). He was an interest-ing figure to observe; his character oozed a quiet, assured confidence. And one could be left with little doubt as to why this was follow-ing the blitz of medals he has won. A weekly diet of two hours javelin and likewise for ham-mer has resulted in: Welsh Championships – gold in hammer, bronze in discus and javelin; Welsh Inter-regional Championships – gold in hammer and javelin; South Wales Inter-regional Championships – gold in hammer and javelin. What I found most intriguing about all of the above was their modesty; they had no real inclination to compile grandiose lists of awards and appearances. Rather, I had to prise the details of their achievements out of them! Matteo’s closing line epitomised this for me: “Anything else?” I enquired after the im-pressive résumé (jokingly, of course). “A cou-ple, yeah” was his response. Marvellous. Written by TGH. With thanks to Caitlin

Couper.

Interviews English A Level students have enjoyed

interviewing sporting and musical stars of the school. First into the room was Tom Downey Year 11, trombonist. A reserved character in spite

of his imposing figure, he swiftly divulged his instrument of choice – the trombone – and his ensuing success: in March he played in Carnegie Hall, New York as a part of the Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Wind Band. He hopes to progress into orchestras one day, perhaps even giving lessons. Not bad for someone who took up the trombone on the basis that “there were no trumpets left!” Following his punctual departure, Emma Da-vies (Year 8 cricketer) joined us. Emma,

having started her career in cricket during her primary school years, was picked for Wales by the time she was eleven – an hon-our she has retained to this day as a mem-ber of the All Girls Welsh Under 15s. She went on to inform me that she “was more of

“a gold in the British Gymnastics Finals”

Page 8: School Newsletter Xmas 2010

What was it like when you went to the Commonwealth Games? There was quite a relaxed atmosphere in Team GB. The facilities were excellent in the International zone; there was a 50m pool, a gym and loads to do when you weren’t competing or training. We couldn’t go outside very much as the heat was too draining. I already knew David Davies as he is my teammate at Cardiff and he intro-duced me to the rest of the team like Re-becca Adlington the Double gold Olympic medal winner and James Goddard. What are your plans for the future? I’m taking a gap year next year to concen-trate on swimming as that time will be cru-cial in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games and I really want to be picked. I am the British junior record holder for the 200m medley and I also compete in the freestyle 200m and 400m, so I am defi-nitely aiming to be in the GB Squad for London 2012.

Lloyd Chalke, Year 12, is a Welsh Youth International rugby centre. He also plays for Cardiff Blues Under 18 team and is contracted to the Cardiff Blues academy.

Interviews

Ieuan Lloyd, Year 13, has represented both Wales and Great Britain at interna-tional swimming competitions such as the Commonwealth Games and the European Junior Championships. He has been selected for the Great Britain World Class Development Squad which allo-cates funding to the most promising ath-letes. His next challenge is February’s GB v Germany Senior duel meet. Ieuan, how old were you when you took up swimming? My dad first took me swimming when I was 3 and when I was five, my older sis-ter Megan got picked for the Cardiff swimming trials. I went along too and im-pressed the coaches. Since then, I’ve worked my way up all the squads to the top squad. What are the most important elements in your training regime? I have 10 training sessions a week of around 90 minutes each. These take place before and after school and also at the weekend so it’s a massive commit-ment. I don’t really have a specific die-tary regime, I just have to be sensible and healthy most of the time with what I eat.

Page 9: School Newsletter Xmas 2010

Owen, when did you realise that you were such a good runner? That happened during the Sports Day when I was in Year 7 as I won the 1500m race by a big margin. I then joined Barry and Vale Harriers and went to train at Jen-ner Park. I started training 2 or 3 times a week and now I’m up to training every day, sometimes twice a day. Do you still take part in athletics events or do you just focus on cross country now? All winter I do cross-country but I still run track events in the summer. I run the 800m, 1500m and the 3 and 5 kilometer races. My favourite event is cross-country though. What are your objectives for the future? I would love to get picked for an Olympic track event and I want to compete in the next Commonwealth Games. With Cross country, I want to make it to the European and World Cross Country Championships representing Great Britain at the highest level.

Interviews

Lloyd, at what age did you become interested in rugby? When I was in junior school, I only played football but when I came up to Year 7 in Stanwell, some friends told me that I should try out for Penarth RFC. Within a month, I had not only been picked for the Penarth team but also for the Cardiff and Vale district team! How did you decide which position to play? I had watched rugby with friends before starting to play and I always knew I wanted to be a back. Because of my size and weight, I thought I’d be better suited to centre and that’s the position I’ve al-ways stayed in. As a member of the Cardiff Blues and Wales youth teams, do you ever get to meet any of the senior players? Yes, we see them all regularly at the training centres. At under 16 level, I played alongside George North. Martyn Williams and Gethin Jenkins are the players that speak to the youth team the most. Who are your sporting role models and what are your dreams for the fu-ture? Sonny Bill Williams the New Zealand centre is the player that I admire the most. My ambition is to be a senior Inter-national for Wales and to get British Li-ons caps.

Owen Haswell represents the Welsh Cross Country team at Under-20 level. He has competed in the Home Countries Cross Country International against run-ners from England, Scotland and all-Ireland.

Untold Stories Exhibition

Stanwell School was pleased to be of-fered the opportunity to contribute to the “Untold Stories” exhibition, held at the Art Central Gallery in King’s Square, Barry. The purpose of the exhibition is to dis-play pieces of work, including art work, poetry and textiles to commemorate indi-viduals who have suffered in past events and also pay homage to brave heroes past and present. Pupils were encouraged to focus on the Holocaust or one of the World Wars. However, the contribution could also be about a famous individual from history or someone (past or present) who has acted in a brave or humane manner and made a difference to people’s lives. As anticipated, an impressive number of pupils were eager to contribute to this initiative. The exhibiters visited the Art and Textiles departments and were highly impressed with the standard of work on display. The exhibition is an initiative to help commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2011. The exhibition is working in alli-ance with the Welsh Assembly Govern-ment and the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. The exhibition is situated in the Art

Central Gallery in King Square until the end of January. Opening times are Tues-day till Saturday, 10am-4pm. Some pupils chose a family member as their inspiration for this competition; for example Amelia Rowlands produced a creative piece dedicated to her great, great uncle Archibald Rowlands who was a key figure in the War Office during the Second World War.

to all pupils, parents and staff for making Stanwell a ‘Green Environment’ to be. During Eco Stanwell week 2010 the whole

school considered the sustainability of mo-bile phones. Students considered in depth the impact that consumer choices have on resources and conflicts around the world. Did you know: There are 45,000 mobile phones in use

in the UK at this moment. 77% of the population use a mobile

phone. 90% of 15 - 25 year olds own a mobile

phone. In 2000, the estimated demand for mobile phones and other electronic goods was at a record high. The price of coltan on the world market in December 2000 reached $400 per lb compared with less than $50 per lb in January 2000. As a result of the coltan boom, workers in the Congo who had earned $1 a day were able to earn $80 a day as miners. All across eastern Congo large numbers of people from all sections of the community, including chil-dren, rushed to join the 'Coltan Boom'. Help! Please could you help us with our Christ-mas Card campaign. As part of a county competition students are asked to collect Christmas cards for recycling. The pupil with the most cards wins a prize. Last Year Jack Powell Year 9 won £100 by col-lecting 1007 cards. See Ms H Morgan for more details.

Eco-Schools

Eco Stanwell September 2010 saw the introduction of our new Eco Stanwell committee, I would like to take this opportunity to intro-duce our new members: Pupils YEAR 7: Emily Ross,Bethan Hearne Jamie Green YEAR 8: Lucy Bond, Harvey Atkins YEAR 9: Utako Wirth YEAR 10: Leonor Worssam, Emelie Johnson YEAR 11: Seren Vickers, Joe Ingram YEAR 12: Corey Alcock,Helen Brabham YEAR 13: Barcley Nickels, Jessica Herrity The committee meet once a half term to discuss environmental issues that are impacting on our school. The aim of the committee is to ensure that the whole school is working towards our environ-mental goal: ‘Stanwell School wishes to excel at promoting en-vironmental awareness throughout the school and the wider community by encouraging respect for

the environment throughout all aspects of the school life’.

Current topics include: litter, conserva-tion, energy, reduction of plastic cups and promotion of recycling practices within the school. Eco Stanwell has a number of action plans to work towards this year: Creating a Conservation Area Reducing the use of plastic cups Reducing Energy consumption in the

school Promoting global issues e.g. mobile

(both Year 13). We asked why they chose to be part of the production this year. They both explained that they were in last year’s production and it was such an incredible and massively popular show that it was a “no-brainer” in deciding whether or not to participate this year! We also asked how the cast were feeling about the show at this mo-ment in time. Thom noted that “the general feeling in the group is one of mass excitement, I feel particularly proud of the show so far and now see-ing the staging and costumes coming together really has put a lot of pride into people’s performances. There’s a sense that you’d be letting the team down if you gave a lack-lustre perform-ance.” Watching the show coming together with cast, crew and music is really proving how strong Stanwell school

productions can be, with the dedicated influence of the teachers and pupils alike, this year’s musical extravaganza seems set to be just as successful as its predecessors.

Grease the musical We talked to the cast of the senior musical ‘Grease’, in order to see how the production is coming along with the curtain call fast approaching. The general excitement about the show seems to be building by the day and

the cast and teachers are working countless hours in order to create a magnificent spectacle. Danny Zuko, leader of the T-birds, played by Taite Drew (Year 11) is paired with Sandy, played by Emma Campbell (Year 13). After asking both of them how they were feeling about playing the lead roles they said, “we’re very excited to be playing such well known characters, with Grease’s popularity being on such a global scale, this gave it an added pressure as everyone knows the songs.” They continued by saying that they both felt very pleasantly surprised for getting the chance to be the leads and are feeling apprehensive about their per-formances. Kenickie & Rizzo are the other “loved-up” stage couple played by Lowri Protheroe and Thom Stephanakis

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

This year has seen record numbers of participants taking up the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The aim is to develop the opportunity for expedi-tions to be completed through the me-dium of canoeing or kayaking. The walk-ing expedition section will still be an inte-gral part of the scheme and will be un-dertaken during the summer term. Many of the successful Bronze Award participants have continued onto the Sil-ver Award. This means the expedition section is for 3 days and 2 nights. This is also the second year that Stan-well have had so many pupils hoping to participate in the Gold Award scheme that we have an open Gold group. These participants include Corey Al-cock, Niall Armstrong, Emily Chick, Ben Cockerill Evans, Alys Davies, Zoe Farbrace, Sam Harries, Grace Jen-kins, Tom Knight, Stuart Macleod, Tom Pain, Cem Papaker, Iestyn Penry Williams, Andrew Sims, Caroline Smee, Andrew Somers, Rose Tuthill, Rhys Ward, Eleanor Way, Faye Wig-more and Josh Woodcock. These pu-pils need to complete the 4 sections of the Award, the expedition section being 4 days and 3 nights. The Gold partici-pants also have to do a further section to the Award—a residential section. The expedition dates have been provi-sionally set for next year. They are as follows: Bronze Award Sat 5th March—Cowbridge Fri 24th June—Sat 25th June

Overnight practice Sat 2nd July—Sun 3rd July Assessed expedition to the Gower. Silver Award Fri 25th Match - Sat 26th March Practice to Hay on Wye Fri 1st April—Sun 3rd April Assessed expedition to Brecon. The open Gold participants should be completing their expedition in the following September, as well as those Bronze par-ticipants undertaking a canoeing expedi-tion. Well done to the following open Gold par-ticipants who have recently completed their expedition in Mid Wales 29th Sep-tember to 3rd October. They are Georgia Dodd, Laura Morgan, Laura Flynn, Dan Phillips, Caitlin Couper, Alice Davies, David King, Thom Stephanakis, Jack Kinnersley, Jamie Lam, Nick Williams, Hal Szary and Amila Alim. I was de-lighted to receive a letter from the Expedi-tion Assessor on the standard of the par-ticipants who said they stood out as being particularly competent and able to fulfil the challenge and that they have achieved the expedition section of the Award in the most difficult of conditions. Many thanks to all the staff, parents and those at the Vale for their continued sup-port without which the Award could not be so successful.

October. Manga Club Manga is a popular style of Japanese comic strip cartoons. Pupils attending Manga Club this term have been shown how to create figures in the Manga style and have started to develop their own Manga characters. The pupils will ulti-mately be able to incorporate their new characters into a chosen story or comic strip of their own design. Whilst learning how to create this style of image the pupils have developed their knowledge of the for-mal elements of art and design, possible careers in the arts industry and are encour-aged to use a variety of creative skills. Club members include: Jessica Boland, Patrick Charleson, Sam Chimuzi, Anton Elliot, Caitlin Ellis, Meg Hann, Sophia Holmes, James Lewis, Jason Machlab, Lily Machlab, Katie Macleod, Jane Nor-ton, Ella Robertson, Keira Ryan, Emily Walters, Ellie Webster, Sam Whilstshire and Johnathan Wright. Primary Liaison The Art & Design Department really en-joyed working with Year 6 pupils who worked with tremendous enthusiasm to produce excellent mono prints based on Japanese design.

Key Stage 3 Art Club Art Club members are given opportunities to develop their artwork by receiving addi-tional support with class based activities

and participating in National or local com-petitions. During this term members of the Art Club have been developing entries for the Global Canvas Competition, based around the theme of Tomorrow’s World. Whilst attending the club pupils are encour-aged to expand their practical skills when using a wide range of media. Club mem-bers include : Tim Burns, Alicia Chapple, Abbie Isaacs, Seren Lewis, Harri Pain, Morgan Rees, Lucy Richards and Ella Smith.

Business Studies

Young Enterprise has got off to a flying start since September! Currently we have two groups running in Year 10 and Year 12. The businesses are run and managed by the students through-out the academic year. Year 10 Manag-ing Director is Tom Davies, Year 12 Managing Director is Steph Leech. Both MDs will have important roles throughout the year, motivating their teams and coordinating the businesses’ activities.

(Year 10 Team)

Open Day was a great success for the teams with a range of different enter-prising gaming activities taking place. These included ‘Beat the Welsh Stig’, ‘Name the Teddy’, Guitar Hero, and ‘Guess the number of sweets’. Stu-dents had also taken the time to create handcrafted items to sell at the event including key rings, bookmarks and cards. The teams made over £200 be-tween them at the event. This money has now gone towards paying their reg-

istration fees and for developing their new business entrepreneurial ideas.

(Year 12 Team)

The Year 9s have started the GCSE course well and have been studying a range of topics including ‘Managing their Money’ and ‘Financial Responsibil-ity and Decision making’. All students have made an excellent start to the topic ‘Big Innovation Ideas’ where they have been designing and marketing a new product for the UK market. Stu-dents have shown incredible teamwork and communication skills with the pres-entation of their ideas.

Homework Club has been well attended by students wishing to improve on the quality of the work and gain additional support from their subject teachers.

Young Enterprise has got off to a flying start!

Drama

“credit to the talented performers”

spooky ITV Drama’ A bouquet of barbed wire’. Another star from Spooks, Robert Bathurst made up the cast with West End Star Ruthie Henshall also appearing. Class work is going very well with year 7 enjoy-ing studying Welsh Folk stories, year 8 studying ‘Bugsy Malone’ and year 9 looking at Willy Russell’s famous musical play ‘Blood Brothers’. The recent year 9 assessment was a credit to the talented performers we have here at Stanwell. Year 10 have been shocked by the real life case of Derek Bentley and are currently in the process of their very first devised piece. This means that students create completely original drama from scratch based on a stimulus. With such a serious stimulus I have been impressed by students’ sen-sitivity and maturity. Year 11 are just about to complete 30 % of their controlled assessment and we wish them very well with this. Year 12 and 13 are also about to embark on practical coursework. Good luck to them too. Extra curricular activities have been impressive this term with Lowri Protheroe, Leilah Harriet and Seren Vickers being part of The Royal Welsh Col-lege of Music and Drama’s Young Actors Studio. Many students are also considering auditioning to be part of the prestig-ious National Youth Theatre of Wales. We wish them all the best. The following sixth form pupils are planning to audition for Drama School or do a degree in the subject: Lowri Protheroe, Alex Mancuso, Emma Campbell and Alex Varney. And remember ’Grease is still the word!’.

The Drama department is very busy at the moment rehearsing for our senior production ‘Grease’. Script and choreography rehearsals are well under way and students have shown much positivity and enthusiasm for the pro-ject. We have high hopes the production will

be a sell out just like previous Stanwell pro-ductions. The AS and A level students recently visited The Theatre Royal in Bath to see a production of Noel Coward’s ‘Blythe Spirit’. The stu-

dents were excited to meet stars of stage and screen such as Alison Steadman who plays Pamela in the hit TV programme ‘Gavin and Stacey’. Hermione Norris who has appeared in ‘Cold Feet’, ‘Spooks’ and recently the

Year 11 have made a great start this term in their assessment work. They have shown commitment and creativity in their designs of chilled deserts and pasta.

Years 9 and 10 have been busy making and decorating a range of cake and pastry products that have been truly scrumptious.

Year 8 have exceeded all ex-pectations in their practical work, creating sophisticated and exotic meals such as sushi, calzone, paella and lasagne.

Year 7 have shown great potential and ambition in their cake projects making some truly unique, decorative cakes.

EESW Again this year a team of enthusiastic Yr12 stu-dents consisting of Helen Brabham, Katie Row-lands,Andrew Simms, Alex Samual, Rosie Tuthill and Danial Luxton, will participate in the Engineering Education scheme in Wales. For a 3rd year we have been teamed with Aberthaw power station and have been set a challenging task. The team have already had an informative site visit and gained further understanding of the project. The team will be working to solve the prob-lem over the coming months. Go4Set

Seven pupils from Yr9 : Kathleen Adheren, Megan Wokey, Jay Kupria, James Humpage, Alasdair Cavelair, Jack Powell and Tommy Hig-gins, have embarked on the Go4set engineering scheme. Following the launch event we have been linked with ARUP engineers in Cardiff and have been set the task of designing a new sports venue for the Penarth area. The team have discussed ideas with the link engineer and are currently pre-paring for a presentation in February.

It has been a very busy start to an exciting year GCSE Year 9 and 10 have made a fantastic start to the GCSE course and are building upon their skills. Pupils are looking forward to their next project where they will be making products in a range of media. Year 11 Year 11 are settling into their CAT projects. Pu-pils are producing some good quality work and are looking forward to producing the artefacts after Christmas. KS3 Year 7 pupils have been working on a wide range of projects from hats to lights. Pupils are enjoying the project and are producing some excellent work. The bag project in year 8 continues to be a suc-cess. Pupils have produced a range of bags in-cluding Boot bags, hand bags, tote bags and drawstring bags. The food project and electronic game continue to generate a great deal of inter-est and enthusiasm. Open Evening Year 9 pupils Silvija Suliokaite, Jessie Preece, Leah Wenger, Megan Morgan, Grace Lloyd-Williams and Ellie Trott produced excellent tex-tile pieces to exhibit in the ‘untold stories exhibi-tion’. The exhibits have been chosen by the Arts Council. Well done Girls! Once again pupils have helped with the demonstration of both ma-terials and equipment, particular thanks to Amila Alim. After School Textiles Club Pupils are encouraged to attend the workshops after school to complete projects and to increase their machine skills or for any extra support.

Design Technology

All year groups have made a fantastic start to the year. Years 11, 12 and 13 are currently final-izing the designs ready for manufacture next term. Three members of the 6th form; Amila Alim, Beth Owens andJamie Lam have enjoyed suc-cess earlier this term. Their projects from last year were selected for the WJEC innovation awards and were on display for two weeks at venues across the country.

growth and minimum unemployment si-multaneously. This was followed by a dis-cussion of the causes, effects and possi-ble solutions for poverty in a country like this. Sixth Form It is a pleasure to report that three stu-dents in year thirteen are attempting to gain entry to Oxbridge—two for P,P and E at Oxford (David King and Jack Kinner-sley) and one for Economics at Cam-bridge—Martin Boden. This group has been studying the macro—economy, the case for and against the cuts in public expenditure and arguments for and against our joining the euro—topical indeed. The year thirteen group have been study-ing whether or not our political system sustains an ‘elective dictatorship’ and whether or not there is a crisis in participa-tion and should this crisis be addressed by making voting compulsory. The formation of the coalition has provoked many inter-esting questions too—are ‘hung’ parlia-ments likely to be a regular feature from now on? What are the implications of the UK adopting the AV system for General Elections for a smaller Commons elected via constituencies of more equal size? We have been impressed with the quality of presentations produced by the A2 group on ‘Aspects of the US Presidency’ - these presentations help satisfy some of the re-quirements of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. Particularly impressive have been the efforts of Peter Woolley, Amy Evans, Holly Flynn, Alex Wing and Laura Thomas.

Economics has proved to be a popular choice with students choosing their op-tions either in year nine or ten. Year ten students have recently completed their ’Guide to the Local Car Market’ mini-projects. They produce a ‘Which’ style re-port, offering recommendations and ‘ones to avoid’ in three price categories. This covers the syllabus requirements of budgeting, personal life-cycle issues and competition between suppliers. Among many good efforts Lauren Beeslee, Emma Hughes and Emma Berry pro-duced first-class work. Year 10 As part of their study of how firms com-pete the year ten group have just played the ‘Fresh Oven Pies’ business game. Each team has to decide on its price, out-put and advertising budget. Their orders are influenced both by these decisions and those of their rivals in a market that is first growing then shrinking. The most profitable team and hence the winners were the team comprising Victoria Ling, Harry Fudge and Lucy Mort who proved adept at matching supply and demand at a profit-maximising price. At the time of writing this group is under-taking a project on the ‘Best bank ac-count for fifteen year olds’ using weighted criteria. Year 11 Year eleven students have been learning about the macro-economy—how we measure economic performance and what tools the Govt has at its disposal for trying to achieve low inflation, economic

English Magazine writers’ club All the English teachers are very proud that some of the very best young writers in Stanwell have formed a writing society under the able leadership of Kirsty Woodford, Year 13. Members meet every Monday in the resource centre to discuss current affairs and decide on topics for their articles. Around 30 young writers attend each week and are guided in their efforts by the senior editorial team consisting of Kirsty as Chief Editor; Tom Harry Year 13, Political Correspon-dant; Kim Lewis Year 12, Home Affairs; Bill Jones Year 13, Science and Tech-nology; Frankie Law Year 11, Entertain-ment; Laura Thomas Year 13, Legal Af-fairs; Alice Fudge Year 12, Fashion and Media. Lauren Beeslee, Tom Rose, Ellen Rowlands, Millie Earp and Laura Gilbert who are all Year 10 pupils, are the senior feature writers. The society always welcomes new members of all ages and plans for a trip to London to visit the Houses of Parliament are being discussed.

Japanese penfriends Year 7 have been writing penfriend letters to Futsu Chu-Gakku (Futsu Junior High School) in Kyushu, Southern Japan. Stan-well students have been telling Japanese pupils about life in Wales, our festivals and culture and what it's like to be a pupil at our school. They are eagerly anticipating their replies from Japan in the new year. The standard of pupils’ work on this topic has been superb in terms of content and presentation.

Mini sagas Miss Light’s Year 8 class have been devis-ing pared down short stories for the na-tional mini sagas competition. This in-volves creating an entire story in no more than 50 words! Some of the entries so far have been true feats of ingenuity. Open Day The school’s open day was a very busy time for the English Department, with many prospective parents of Year 7 and Year 12 taking the opportunity to discuss the curriculum with members of staff. Miss James and Miss Phillips ran a creative writing workshop and Mrs Sheldon held an interactive literature quiz.

Geography

“Autumn Term Has Been Very Fieldwork Friendly!”

Fieldwork Fun! Geography has been fieldwork friendly this term with a visit to Iceland - the country, not the supermarket! During October half term a large group of GCSE and A Level students spent 5 days visiting a huge array of geographical sites and scenery in this amazing country. Geysers, waterfalls, black volcanic beaches, the Mid-Atlantic ridge, hot springs, geothermal power stations, volcanoes and glaciers were just a few of the amazing places of interest on our fun filled itinerary. Pupils even had time to experience Icelandic Horse Riding, visit Reykjavik’s famous Ice Bar, undertake a Zip Wire Challenge across the River Varma and swim in the famous geothermal Blue Lagoon! In contrast, Year Eight visited Cadbury World in Birmingham to complement their unit of study entitled “The Geography of Chocolate”. Pupils experienced a talk on The Location of Industry and the benefits of Fair Trade; developing an empathy and understanding of issues surrounding farming in LEDCs. A tour of the factory and some free samples were gladly accepted and a visit to the Chocolate museum and the interactive exhibition were also thoroughly enjoyed. Year 12 AS Level students were fortunate enough to be invited to a Tectonics Conference in London, learning about the cause and impact of volcanic and earthquake hazards around the world. Guest speakers included Dr Iain Stewart from the BBC TV series

“Power of the Planet”. Well informed students are now ready to tackle their first AS Level examination with added interest and case study materials to

enhance their exam answers!

Open Day

An eventful evening was had by all in the Geography department, with Chocolate tasting, fair trade quizzes and interactive map games entertaining both pupils and parents alike. Pupils were astonished at how much profit a typical chocolate bar company makes and most were ready to support, or at least sample, some Fair Trade chocolate by the end of their visit.

History It has been another busy and enjoyable term in the History Department. Highlights have included the October Open Evening with a Medieval theme. The opportunity to test their archery skills was enjoyed by both pupils and parents alike! The department was delighted that so many History Club members came along to help out including: Lewis Bennett (7T), Sebastian Gordon-Davies (7X), Emily Pearce (7X), Elizabeth McCulloch (7E), Lydia Ferriday (8O), Amy Gifford (8O) and Lauren Vowles (8W).

History Club has once again been a roaring success with an enthusiastic group of pupils from Years 7, 8 and 9 all eager to learn about History outside the classroom environment. They have been meeting regularly on a Mon-day after school and have been creating dis-plays on topics such as famous assassina-tions that will be exhibited in several of the History classrooms. They have also demon-strated their creative skills in preparing and creating props for the Open Evening.

History pupils have studied a lot of interesting key issues this term. In Year 7 pupils have been learning about the Battle of Hastings and who became King of England in 1066.

Year 8 have enjoyed performing plays to find out why Henry VIII got married 6 times and why Elizabeth decided not to marry at all! They thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Tower of London in November especially seeing the place where Anne Boleyn and Catherine How-ard were executed. They also had a great time exploring the cultural side to London; espe-cially visiting Covent Garden and seeing Blood Brothers in the West End.

At GCSE level Year 9 and 10 have been studying the problems and challenges of 1920s America including the Prohibition and the rise of gangsters. Both Years have made an encouraging and enthusiastic start to the course. Well done!

Year 11 have been examining life in Nazi Ger-many before and during World War II. Re-cently they have studied the reasons for the Holocaust and the impact of war on Germany.

Information Technology

As part of Stanwell School’s Transition arrange-ments, the ICT department played host to pupils from Albert, Sully and Evenlode Primary Schools earlier in the term. The aim of the project is to enable pupils in year 6 to use the ICT Depart-ments software in preparation for when pupils come to Stanwell in September 2011. Following on from the transition activities, parents were able to see the work that their children had produced during the school Open Day. Open Evening was again a big success, a big thank you to all pupils who supported the department. The ICT depart-ment had its regular Cyber Cafe; delicious cakes

were baked this time by Isabel Grafton 7R and Abby Mills 7K, thank you girls! Key Stage 4 pu-pils, Robert Turton 9M, Kieran Gibbs 9O, Kyle Strenstrom 9R, Zed Strong 9K and Corrie Wolfenden 10E, helped organise and advertise the Games Zone. This allowed parents and Year 6 pupils to experience both playing games, with the Nintendo Wii, and game creation, using the latest Mission Maker software. At KS3 we have been developing pupils web design and databases skills and many pupils

have shown a high level of ability in class com-pleting good work and offering support to others when it was needed. Key Stage 4 pupils in year 10 have produced some excellent work this term, particularly Riyad Auckbarally, Nicholas Pimlott, Chelsea Mace and Sian Moss . Pupils have very successfully

started to create their own online blog which will act as a project diary and they are enjoying updating this at the end of each lesson. Pupils are already achiev-ing a very high standard of work in lessons and this is a very pleasing start to the course. With coursework deadlines looming for year 11 pupils ,they have been working hard to complete their DIDA Unit 1 and Unit 3 coursework. Although homework clubs have been quiet this term, they have been very beneficial to those who have attended, being able to take full ad-vantage of the focused support from teachers. Some pupils have worked exceptionally well in their own time, notably Joe Keenan, Callum Masters, Alexan-der Williams, Ben Ware and Rachel Thompson.

In order to support pupils learning Stanwell School has introduced a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which aims to give pupils access to teaching and support resources both in school and at home . The ICT Department have now placed their sixth form and Key stage 4 resources online and aim to have their Key stage 3 resources online by mid December. where homework and marking will now be done elec-tronically, starting in the New Year.

Maths Once again the “Maths Mindbenders” on Open Day was a great success. Many current and potential pupils enjoyed the six-puzzle treasure hunt around the De-partment. A record number: 140, com-pleted the puzzles and received a certifi-cate and a bar of chocolate. The double Mathematicians in the Sixth Form took part in the “Senior UK Maths Challenge”, with the top student being Matin Boden in Year 13, who achieved a Gold certificate. Silver certificates went to the following Year 13s: Jack Law, Jack Yeo and Liz Elder. Bronze certificates were awarded to Tom Wil-liams, Year 13, Rhea Ghosal and Daniel Luxton, both Year 12. Our con-gratulations go to all of these for their achievements. Teams were entered in the University of Glamorgan's Under 19 and Under 17 Maths “Pub Quizzes”. Two Stanwell teams were entered in each competition, both competitions had 54 teams from 24 different schools.

In the Under 19 quiz the Year 13 team of Jack Yeo, Jordan Ford, Liz Elder and Martin Boden came joint 4th with the Year 12 team of Liam Pace, Daniel Lux-ton, Rhea Ghosal, Nial Armstrong and Wei Ong finishing 12th. In the Under 17 quiz the Year 11 team (pictured below) of Harry McDonough, Kai Cheung, Joe Ingram, Charles Fear and Frankie Law were 4th and the other Year 11 team of Rachel Fegan, Amy Palin, Joe Keenan, Seren Vickers and James Chaffey finished 12th. All the stu-dents enjoyed the afternoon competitions and did very well in our first year in the competitions.

The Key Stage 3 “Puzzle of the Week” competition has been enthusiastically re-ceived this term. A different Mathematical problem is set each week with a randomly selected correct entry drawn. The winners so far this term are : Year 7— Ethan Hutching, Lewis Bennet, Jamie Penberthy and Alex Hamzelou. Year 8— Daniel Roberts and Nicole But-ler. Year 9— Jack Powell. Homework Club for Year 11 has started and will be continuing on Mondays. This proved invaluable last year, producing very good results, and we look forward to seeing a positive response again this year.

Media & Film

The Media & Film department has much to celebrate so far this year and many things to look forward to in 2011. The first high point was on the GCSE and A Level results days in August, when staff were delighted to note the high stan-dards of attainment reached by most pu-pils. A*-C was 87% at GCSE and 100% of A Level pupils attained a D or higher—well done to all! The department has also started teach-ing the first year of A Level Film Studies. The new Year 9 cohort have made a confident start to their GCSE course and have already displayed their skills as me-dia analysts in recent textual deconstruc-tions. Pupils who have worked particu-larly well this term include Channing Da-vies, Lambert Kalongo, Joel Ringer and Kirsty Lam. Year 10 have been working hard on their induction course and have been focus-sing recently on constructing original film posters in preparation for their course-work. Creative work has already been produced by Megan Tunley, Zach Ghazi-Torbati, Louis Curtis, Ella But-ler-Kavanagh and Broni Coles. Year 11 pupils have been busy complet-ing pieces of coursework for their final folders based on ideas for posters adver-tising new teen films and excellent work has been done by Alana Thomas, Lisa Gourley and Joe Clissold. Year 13 pupils have been working hard this term on their coursework module, which is worth 50% of their total A2 grade. They have been producing re-

search investigations on topics of their own choosing and towards the end of term started planning their creative pieces. Par-ticularly strong pieces of work have been produced by Bethan Savoury, Sophie Chatham, Darren Breed, Becky Boyce and Alex Mancuso. Year 12 pupils are starting their coursework module soon and are already planning their films! Pupils who have already produced excellent work in-clude Olivia Davies, Jacob Smith, Jordan Holt, Sam Green, Jennifer Adams and Tom Campion. Earlier in the term, a group of our Year 12 & 13 students participated in National Film Week and visited the Odeon Cinema at Cardiff Bay for a special screening of James Cameron’s Avatar. The department also created the digital dis-plays for Stanwell’s production of ‘Grease’. Projections were used as part of the stage set with the original designs courtesy of Year 13 pupil, Matthew Goodfellow. Matt also helped with the production of the pro-gramme advertising the show. Film stu-dents from within the Media Department recorded the production for posterity!. Open Day was a great success this year. Year 12 & 13 coursework films were on show as was our portable lighting rig, film camera and editing suite.

“The Media & Film department has much to celebrate this year and many things to look forward to in 2011.”

Modern Foreign Languages

This term has seen a big change for us in the Modern Languages department as we have decided to strengthen the ties between French and German resulting in more joint ventures. The first evidence of this was the “Europa Café” on Open day. It’s popu-larity was unaffected by the change of name and if anything the wider range of cakes available made it even more popu-lar!

There was a fabulous selection of cakes and biscuits, kindly baked by our tal-ented students. Eva Vestergaard (Y9) baked an authentic German “Gugelhopf” cake which was delicious. The “Decorate a cup cake” competition took place again and the entries were wonderful and very creative, making choosing the winners very difficult. Luck-ily PC Emma Mudie was on hand to help us select the winners.

First prize went to Isla Williams (Y13) with her very imaginative “Hamburger” cup cake.

Second prize went to Phoebe Christie (Y8) and joint third prize to Ellie Davis (Y13) and Emma Davies and Milly Wil-liams (Y8). Amy Yeo (Y7) also had a prize for the best presentation as her cup-cakes arrived in a beautiful box tied up with ribbon!

We also had a quiz where people had to identify why various German and French people were famous. This was won by Daniel Casseldine (Y7) with a little help from mum!

A big thank you to our helpers on the day: Martin Doyle (Y8), Ellie Davis (Y13), Er-genia Brusnitskaya (Y8) and Christina Bugert (Y8).

“The Europa Café on Open Day was a huge success!”

Modern Foreign Languages

In September we celebrated the Euro-pean day of Lan-guages by giving pupils taster ses-sions in other lan-guages, such as Spanish, Italian and Russian.

The prize for the most adventurous teacher goes to Miss Lemon who taught some Swedish at the request of her Y11 class. Some very keen pupils had even been to Ikea to purchase some authentic Swedish food to add to the festivities and baked some traditional Swedish delights. In October a group of A level French stu-dents saw Truffaut’s “Les 400 Coups” (The 400 Blows) at Chapter Arts centre as part of the National Schools Film week. The pupils enjoyed their first experience of “New Wave” cinema, which was introduced by a senior lec-turer from Cardiff University. Planning for next year’s German ex-change has begun. In April we will be travelling to Staufen. Year 9 are looking forward to meeting up with their pen-friends again after spending a most en-

joyable ten days together in July. The year 8 pupils are being matched up and will soon be finding out the names of

their partners.

On the in-ternational front Mrs Symonds will be tak-ing a group of 55 Year 8 pupils to Paris in March next year. This is

a joint venture with the Welsh department to sample the St. David’s Day celebrations which take place in Disneyland Paris. Pu-pils will also be enjoying a boat trip down the Seine, a visit to the Eifel Tower and to the cathedral of Notre Dame. Lots of pupils in French and German have been working hard this term and we have awarded a record number of merit points and certificates. These pupils have then been entered into the monthly raffle draws and there have been lots of lucky winners. In German: Y8 Lucia Attanasio,Y9 Clara White Y10 Bryony Guerrier,Y11Joe Keenan Y8 Kira Geach, Y9 Megan Herritty, Y10 Nishma Bhatia, Y11 Sara Aeyad In French: Y7 Emily Geen, Y8 Lucy Bond, Y9 Elliott Davies, Y10 Laura Gilbert Y11 Anna Walsh Y7 Georgia Logan, Y8 Thomas Mullett, Y9 Fiona McGavin, Y10 Jack Baker, Y11 Kayleigh Porter

Joyeux Noël and Fröhliche Weihnach-ten to you all!

Music

Following excellent summer results both at GCSE and A Level, we were soon steeped in serious auditioning when we decided to present the hot West End musical ‘Grease’. We obtained the rights to perform the show, and have been extremely busy in rehearsals ever since! The performances have been scheduled to take part Dec 13th -16th inclusive in the school auditorium - and at the time of writing, students are really looking forward to the performances. The production offers opportunity for crea-tive staging, exciting solo, ensemble and chorus pieces– not to forget our talented musicians, always accompanying the singing and dancing so professionally. Taite Drew in Year 11 has been cast as Dann

and Emma Campbell in Year 13 as Sandy. Other senior groups and Key Stage Three extra curricular music groups have also been working hard this term and have en-joyed building up repertoire and skills in

weekly after-school rehearsals. The senior jazz group and senior choir began learning their new repertoire in earnest at the start of term, and all Key Stage 3 music clubs such as Outsiders, Junior Jazz and Girl’s Choir have been preparing for a concert, which they hope to perform in the New Year. Girl’s Choir are singing songs such as ‘Put Your Records On’ and ‘What If’. Junior Jazz have been playing ‘I Feel Good’ and ‘Rock Around the Clock’. Out-siders (KS3 boys choir) have been per-forming songs such as ‘Dreaming of You’ and ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’. It is always such a pleasure to rehearse with our pupils as their hard work, obvious

talent and dedication brings superb re-wards.....all these groups will have an opportu-nity to perform publicly next term – so watch this space! Many pupils in Stanwell have peripatetic in-strumental or vocal lessons and the numbers this year are again high. It should be noted that the department has a selection of instru-ments available for pupils to learn, (these in-clude an oboe, bassoon and some cellos). If anybody is interested in learning, please see a member of the music department to find out more details, as pupils can sign up for lessons after Christmas. Many pupils have again attended Music Tech-nology workshops, which are held regularly after school and appeal to many pupils. Mr Reid, the music technician, has prepared courses which so many pupils really enjoy. The computer suites and the recording studio have been updated to include the latest ver-sions of Sibelius, Cubase and Reason - and this has been most beneficial, not only to Key Stage three classes , but especially to our cur-rent examination students who are working hard to produce compositions for their GCSE and AS / A Level coursework portfolios. Many pupils have been busily preparing them-selves for music practical examinations at the end of this term. We hope all your hard work has been worthwhile...and that you pass with flying colours. In addition, Stanwell is always well repre-sented in County Music concerts at the end of term, and all those involved deserve praise and recognition for their contribution. During the last week of term, many of our pupils will have performed in City Hall, St Davids Hall and Cardiff County Hall, in senior County groups such as Jazz News, the County Youth Choir and the County Youth Brass Band. Well done everybody.

Have a Happy Christmas!

Netball Year 7- This club has proved popular once again with over 40 girls attending every Wednesday after school. It has been really difficult to chose an A and a B team with the standard being so high. The girls have played in a number of matches with successful wins against St. Richard Gwyn and Bro Morgannwg. The 7B team recently played in a 7B tournament at Talybont, where after playing an exhausting 7 matches made it through to the final against Llanishen. They unfortunately lost in the final 4-1 but showed an excellent display of netball throughout. The girls were awarded with medals by a Welsh netball coach. Hopefully the 7A netball team will do as well in March. Year 8– The Year 8 team has continued to build upon the excellent play produced in Year 7. They have won a number of matches including beating Llantwit 13-1 and St. Richard Gwyn 7-0. The girls are working hard in the build up to the county tournament where they narrowly missed out on reaching the final last year. A special mention to Milly Williams who has joined the team this year and has al-ready made some valuable contributions. Year 9- Training has been going well with the Year 9 team with plenty of competition for positions. They have had some good matches against St. Richard Gwyn and Llantwit. Keep up the good work girls.

Special mention to Carys Warner, Leah Wenger and Laura Gale who have all played very well so far this season. Year 10– Year 10 have also been working well so far this season. They have lost 2 of their 3 matches but had a good win 6-2 against St. Richard Gwyn. It has been really nice to see Martha Jenkins back training and playing after a year out. She has contributed well to the team. All girls have played well so far and need to keep up the good work. Cross country Girls– The cross country season got off to a good start in September with good runs from Emily Wooster (Yr 7), Kate Coker (Yr 9) and Anna Mirza Davies (Yr 8). These three girls have progressed in every race and are currently in a very good position going into the championship in January. In the South Wales schools competition, there was another impressive run from Kate Coker. On a cold day in November, a team of 10 Year 7 and 8 girls travelled to Brecon for the Welsh schools competition. Kate Coker produced a fantastic run coming 4th in a very tough field, while Emily Wooster, Anna Mirza Davies, Rebecca Humpage and Annabelle Birch– Hurst finished in close succession which re-sulted in the Year 7 and 8 team coming 4th in Wales. Well done girls!

Boys - The boys’ cross country team got off to a flying start in September with the Year 7 team coming second in their first race. Strong performances from Cameron House, Ethan Hutchings, and Alex Lan-grish helped the team make their mark against tough opposition. The whole team have showed commitment in their training, turning up in any weather conditions with their hard work paid off in the second league race which they won as a team and Spencer Robinson winning out of over 200 competitors. They are currently 1st in the league with one race left to go in January. The team recently travelled to Brecon to compete in the Welsh Schools Champion-ships, gaining vital experience ready for their January league race. In other years, Rhys Fford (year 8), Ieuan Jones, Elliot Richards, Tamas Barry and James Flanagan (year 10) have all worked hard in training and improved through each race with Rhys, Ieuan and Elliot represent-ing Stanwell at the Welsh Schools Champi-onships in Brecon.

Girls Football Year 7, 8 and 9– We have recently started a girls’ football club here at Stanwell and it has gone from strength to strength. Atten-dance rates have been very pleasing and new pupils continue to show interest in join-ing. In the matches, the girls have per-formed extremely well and are currently un-defeated, having beaten Bryn Hafren 2-0 (goal scorers: Kelsey Murray and Ellie

Wenger (Yr 8) and Cowbridge 9-0 (goal scorers: Kelsey Murray, Ellie Wenger, Lucia Attanasio (Yr 8) and Ellie Rees (Yr 9). Well done girls and good luck for the rest of the season! Rugby Year 7– An excellent start to the year, for Year 7 Rugby with many enthusi-astic and talented Rugby players. At present the team is unbeaten having played Llantwit Major, Barry Boys and a strong Cowbridge side. The team has been well led by Spencer Robinson and has received excellent support from Joe Short, Charles De Grey, Will Gale and Morgan Humphries. The top try scorer of the three games has been George Rob-erts in the backs. Year 8– The Year 8 Rugby team are making steady progress but are being hindered by poor attendance at train-ing. The team has benefited from an influx of new players who have equipped themselves really well. Zak Dyer, Oliver Shore, Liam Quinn, Ellis Pymon and James Cople have been present at all games and train-ing . With regular attendance at train-ing by all players, performances will improve. Year 9- The year 9 rugby team has played some very high quality rugby this term, with a number of strong

powerful forwards and fast running backs, they have been able to provide some breath taking moments of rugby for the many dependable spectators that have watched their matches come rain or shine. Year 10- Year 10 rugby has started on a positive note with some very good away wins. This is a side that has shown, in some hard, physical games over the past two seasons, that they have a pas-sion for the sport and the potential to be a very good side. With four current dis-trict players (Harry Roberts, Nicholas Boudier, Matthew Allen and Alan Doyle) and many others playing to that standard , it will be interesting to see just how well these young men can do.

Seniors- This has been a very exciting year for the Senior Rugby Side. They began with a team building evening at the White Water Rafting Centre which was a huge success. This was followed by being accepted into the Blues South League in which they have put on many good performances against teams such as Howells and Ysgol Bro Morgannwg. They have also been lucky enough to have a new Canterbury kit given to them by Stanwell PTA for which they are very thankful.

Girls Basketball-

with its attendance growing in Years 7, 8 and 9. The girls have shown excellent commitment and dedication to their train-ing and have worked extremely hard since the start of term. They are now looking forward to beginning their season with a number of games lined up for the end of December against St. Cyres and Cowbridge. I am sure that we will see the same success from these young girls as last year. Special mention goes to Seren Marsh, Rebecca Humpage, Anna Jones (Yr 7), Rebecca Egerstrom, Shanice Donovan, Ellie Wenger (Yr 8), Keeley Durham, Harriet Blunden and Leah Wenger (Yr 9).

Football Year 8 - The Year 8 football team, led by Mathew Bennett, has made a great start with a win away at Barry, the team is go-ing from strength to strength in training and we are looking forward to more fix-tures in the near future.

Year 10 - The Year 10 team had a strong start to the season with a 5-0 win against Michaelston Community College. The team have been showing commitment in their training and have worked hard in their other matches and are looking for-ward to future fixtures. Psychology

It has been a busy and enjoyable term in the Psychology Department. Highlights have in-cluded the October Open Day which was a great success as visitors were keen to get in-volved. Favourite activities included the Stroop test, which required participants to override the automatic process of reading meaning into words, as well as attempts to guess the real smile from a series of genuine and posed photographs.

Year 12 have worked hard this term as they have been introduced to research into the na-ture and structure of memory. This has in-volved practical class experiments to assess the differences between short term and long term memory. Students have also used cogni-tive models to explain how memory works. They particularly enjoyed designing models of their own in class. This knowledge of memory has been applied to everyday life when looking at the accuracy of eye witness testimony and techniques to improve memory including mind maps and peg word methods.

Students have examined evidence which shows these strategies work. This has an im-portant message as the students prepare to sit their first AS exam in January on Memory, Attachment and Research Methods. Year 12 groups have been looking at the key impact of attachment theory on society. They

have looked at the roles of comfort, responsive-ness and food in order to understand that there is an interaction of many factors in producing developmental outcomes. More recently stu-dents have enjoyed looking at topical issues re-lating to attachment including the issue of day care. They have examined research which sug-gests day care can be potentially harmful whilst other contradictory studies have asserted the benefits of day care for social development.

Year 13 are also preparing for exams early in the new year. They have shown great interest in the topic of psychopathology as we have dis-cussed the issues surrounding the classification and diagnosis of depression. Students have en-joyed exploring the various explanations of de-pression and the different approaches to treat-ment ranging from drug therapy to psycho-analysis or ECT. Students have also enjoyed studying the new topic of addictive behaviour. They have looked at initiation, maintenance and relapse of specific addictions such as smoking and gambling and more recently have been learning about interventions to deal with such addictions. In research methods students have been revising the various ways in which re-search can be conducted and have been consid-ering how the scientific method can be applied to human behaviour. Many students in Year 12 and 13 have taken advantage of Psychology drop-in sessions on Wednesdays from 3-4.30pm. Students have used these sessions as an opportunity to begin revision early or to revisit more challenging as-pects of the course. These will continue in the new year and all Psychology students are wel-come to attend. We wish all the students taking exams in Janu-ary the best of luck.

Religious Education

Open Day The RE Department had a steady stream of visitors during the evening. Many pro-spective pupils and parents contributed to the “Questions for God” asking challenging questions of God. As thinking skills re-main such a key focus in RE it was en-couraging to see so many future Stanwell pupils thinking philosophically. Artefact displays provided a colourful background and many were interested in the Smart Board display of work produced by students to publicise the work of the Pooncholai Children's Home, for which the RE Department has raised funds over the last few years. The presentations high-lighted the difference in lifestyles between pupils at Pooncholai and those at Stanwell and the link with India provides real-life ex-amples to support the pupils’ study of wealth and poverty as part of their GCSE course. As both Year 9 and 10 have raised funds for the children’s home this year, it was interesting for visitors to see the range of publicity material promoting the work of Pooncholai produced by Stan-well students.

Year 13 hard at work! The RE Department’s first cohort of A Level students are working hard as they approach their final exams. They are now studying how to apply ethical theories to the issues of war and medical dilemmas including cloning and stem cell research. Dealing with such controversial topics is what makes the course so stimulating and exciting and all the students are rising to the challenge.

Science

APPLIED SCIENCE It has been an exciting time with the introduction of A level Applied Science in September. The students who are studying the course have thrown themselves into the first topic on Health Science. It has been a pleasure to teach such an enthusiastic group—but somewhat disturbing to see how much some of them relish the dissection ! The whole department wish them every success with their first external examination in January. BIOLOGY Despite this very busy term two members of year 13, Jessica Herrity and Elizabeth Turner have found time to complete the CREST Gold Award for work that they did in university this year, congratulations to them on receiving this prestigious award from the British Science association. Open Day was very busy in the Biology department, the most popular activity being testing different foods. Homework Club and the 6th form revision sessions have been well attended this term, thanks to all those pupils and students who have kept us busy. Year 12 enjoyed an informative visit to Cardiff in December to the annual Genetics Lectures organised by Gene Park Wales. Year 13 also found the visit of Anne Marsden, a specialist in the treatment of kidney disease particularly informative, and her talk prompted much discussion. Finally we would like to wish all those taking external examinations in January every success. PHYSICS The Physics department has had a very busy start to the year. It has been particularly pleasing to see and support so many keen GCSE and A level students in study periods and after school. Open day for the Physics department proved particularly popular this year with many visitors competing for the best fruity battery and crowds gathering to watch the balloon on a bed of nails pressure demo.

Year 12 It’s been an exciting term in Year 12 with the Welsh Baccalaureate course well un-derway. Students have been busy work-ing on the Team Enterprise activity that serves as a basis for the requirements of the Key Skill of ’Working with Others’. The teams worked on designing, planning, producing, financing and marketing their products, leading up to the October Open Evening where a ’Trade Fair’ was held for the new businesses to sell their products. This was incredibly successful with all teams selling high quality products, mak-ing a profit and pupils thoroughly enjoying the new experience. We may see some budding entrepreneurs from the year group in the future. All groups were given school loans decided on by local busi-ness people to finance their product. How much depended on how they impressed in a ’Dragons’ Den’ style presentation given by each group. We would like to thank all the ’Dragons’ for their help and contribu-tion in making the Team Enterprise activ-ity such a success.

The students are also in the process of fulfilling their 30 hour ‘Community Partici-pation’ commitments. Some have cho-sen to do this in school through helping younger pupils in classes as part of Stan-well’s long running ’Buddy’ Scheme whilst others are helping out in the community. Many have continued the links that Stan-well has with various charities including

The Red Cross, Marie Curie, The Alz-heimer's Society, PHAB and Oxfam. As part of the ‘Wales, Europe and the World’ element of the Qualification, stu-dents have taken a module entitled ’Understanding Democracy.’ They consid-ered how Stanwell would operate as a di-rect democracy and the arguments for and against lowering the voting age; as well as investigating the political systems in other countries. They have also embarked on their ’Essential Skills Wales’ communica-tion work by considering the position of the Welsh language in contemporary society. Several of our students are already seri-ously planning for the future, taking part in the Medlink and other Workshop confer-ences at Nottingham in December. Others have been spending time with Barry Magis-trates, who have been taking sessions in school with those interested in a career in Law. Several students-Ben Bellingham, Kate Humphries, Victoria Scaglioni, Sarah Boden, Jasmine Vincent, Natalie Caple, Tom Elliott, Jorjah Chedzey, Emily Da-vies, Miles Braithwaite, Sochia Enos, Elise Westcott, Grace Jenkins, and Jes-sica Neff are looking forward to raising money for the Joshua Foundation. Pat-rick Mullan, Ella Mott-Riley, Andrew Gra-ham, Victoria Scaglioni and Tom Elliott are busy raising funds for the Lesotho Project. Daniel Luxton, Alex Samuel, Helen Brab-ham, Andrew Sims, Katie Rowlands and Rosemary Tuthill are working hard on their Engineering Scheme project. We would like to finish with a reminder that Year 12 students will receive a Mid Year report on their progress in January and also to thank all parents for your acknowledge-ments of the November Interim reports.

Year 13 Since completing their AS examinations, Year 13 have been focusing sharply on their post-18 intentions, which for the ma-jority means moving into Higher Educa-tion. Indeed, much time has been spent researching courses and making impor-tant decisions about what to study and where. Personal Statements have been drafted and re-drafted, UCAS forms have been completed and references have been written and then discussed in 1:1 situations. A lot of tutorial and assembly time has been dedicated to UCAS-related activities, representatives from Cardiff University have given a valuable talk on interview techniques and they and other agencies have conducted a series of mock inter-views. With this the largest Year 13 the school has ever had, it is not surprising that we have a record number of students applying to Oxbridge with a total of 21, as well as an additional 10 who have chosen to study Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science. We wish them and all our other students every success.

The highlight of the term, though, has un-doubtedly been the opening of the new Year 13 Study Centre on Monday, 13th October. This provides a very large, multi-functional and attractively furnished area with access to computers and private study rooms, as well as informal seating

and a new secretarial office.

The Head Boy and Head Girl, Daniel Phil-lips and Sarah Jones, performed the opening ceremony during which they ex-pressed their gratitude to all staff, builders and contractors, who had worked so hard to complete such an exceptional facility. Year group members have also been busy in a personal capacity: Emma Campbell starred in the lead role of Sandy in the Senior Musical Grease and Isla Williams played Patti Gilmour. Arthur Kelly played in the band. Joe Rogers, Joshua Wainscott, David Richards, James Verdon, Jordan Rha-man and Tom Gillanders continue to per-form regularly for the Senior Rugby team. Several students have continued links with various charities-Joe Turner with St John’s Ambulance; Sophie Mair with Marie Curie, Amy Pemberton with PDSA, Natasha Martell with the Joshua Founda-tion and John Teagle with a monthly ‘Homeless Run’ in Cardiff with his church. Many students have been successful with their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award- Peter Wooley, Jessica Eades, Georgia Dodd, Peter Pemberton, Tomos Davies, Caitlin couper, David Ring, Laura Flynn, Sam Pena-Taylor and James Brown. Jamie Lam and Amila Alim had their Product Design projects selected for dis-play at the Wales Innovations Exhibi-tions.
