The main speaker last week was Michael Carr-Gregg, a previous visitor to Tudor House. As an adolescent psychologist, he also has a high profile media career. Much of his current work focuses on the issue of cyber safety. He reminded all Primary Heads about the importance of social media guidelines, which recommend that children should be at least 13 to engage with social media. He pointed out that our integrity as adults in children’s lives is at stake if we knowingly condone children under this age accessing social media; no Primary School aged child should therefore have access to social media, e.g. Facebook or Instagram. He also spoke of the dangers of providing children, in any context with smartphones - he likened this to giving children a computer in their pocket, often with unlimited access, just one click away from potentially very dangerous online sites. Another speaker came from A Friend’s Place, run by the National Centre for Childhood Grief. He spoke of their

valuable work with bereavement counselling for children from 3 – 18 years and for training in grief counselling for

children https://childhoodgrief.org.au I share this information as I found both presentations very enlightening.

You may wish to read more or chat with me further about these topics.

Last week was huge! Congratulations to our skiers for their enthusiasm and success on the snowfields. Mrs

Hayman spoke at Assembly on Thursday about her pride in Tudor House @ Thredbo at Snow Sports Week,

announcing students who’ll race in the National races and commending the boys and girls for representing our

School so beautifully. Back at Tudor House - we enjoyed Rosalind Dale’s visit (she wrote, Bunty Bailey’s Adventures

in Berrima) and the Book Character Dress-up Parade, as well as golf, science experiments and fun Kahiba activities

- in addition to more routine classroom learning.

The Headmaster delighted in one of his regular visits to Tudor House on Tuesday - he stayed for lunch (he was

impressed with the lasagne, a recent re-addition to the menu) after the Tudor House Foundation Board and

Working Group meetings. He enjoyed being ‘on duty’ in the Lower School playground at playtime regaling

younger members of the School community with his extensive knowledge, as a biologist, of the Lower School Lawn

flora and fauna (and droppings thereof).

Thank you for your support as we’ve transitioned the purchase of Tudor House School uniform to Braeside (The

King’s School). This is still a work in progess! Below is the current system with acquiring uniform (we are grateful

to you for making this work so efficiently!)

The Clothing Pool (used School Uniform) at Tudor House - this is open on Tuesday during term time or by

appointment, 8.30am to 9.15am.

We’ve received information about The Bowral Classic Bike Race (on Sunday October 21st) from Zac Hulm who’s

working with James Yaffa (Old Tudorian and father of Dougal, 2015 and Alister, 2017) to make it easy for Tudor

House families to be part of this important local event . We had a significant number of enthusiastic participants

in 2017. The link to register for the Bowral Classic is: http://www.bowralclassic.com.au . Once on the site follow

the registration process, select:

Tudor House boarders have been invited to paint a number of bicycles, delivered to us, with red paint. These bikes

will be displayed on various local properties leading up to the Bowral Classic Race advertising the event, and our

School!

We’re looking forward to our next Tudor House Open Day on Wednesday September 5th from 9.00am to

11.00am. You may have seen flyers, banners and bus advertisements around the Southern Highlands. We’ve also

been promoting this on 2ST and our Facebook page. We’ve been busy! Thank you for recommending Tudor House

to friends and family with Primary School aged children. The morning will begin with coffee/tea and a short

presentation in the Library Lecture Theatre. The School Captains and Monitors will then lead tours around the

School - there’s no better way to learn about what’s happening at Tudor House!

I’m pleased to inform you that we’ve received the results for ICAS Writing (English and Maths results are yet to

arrive). 23 students in Years 3 - 6 participated in ICAS Writing. Eight of those students received a Distinction, Credit

or Merit Award in the competition.

At the beginning of term I informed the Tudor House community that a multipurpose court (tennis, basketball

and netball) should be completed before the end of 2018. We’ve been informed by Dynamic Sports that

construction should begin, weather permitting, in the week beginning September 10th. Tennis lessons will continue

until the end of Term 3. We’ll inform parents about Term 4 tennis lessons before the beginning of Term 4. It will be

wonderful if our multipurpose court is ready for the Year 6 Leavers week just before the end of Term 4, for the

Mother/Son Tennis games.

We had a successful week with Chess and IPSHA Athletics teams. Please see Mr Goodfellow’s newsletter articles

for more details.

Thank you for encouraging your children to collect sponsors for the Colour Fun Run on Friday September 14th.

We look forward to seeing you at the Billy Cart Derby at 9.00am tomorrow (Saturday September 1st) for the Grand

Parade, the beginning of the proceedings. It will be advisable to arrive by 8.30am so all billy carts have been checked

and cars are all parked on Westfield - please bring a gold coin donation for parking (Low Ropes Course). The Stage

3 parents (Years 5 and 6) have prepared delicious snacks and beverages for the day. Money raised will go towards

the Low Ropes Course. With one Billy Cart Derby under my belt from last year, I am very excited for the next!

You are warmly invited to join the Tudor House Prayer Group on Monday mornings at 8.00am in the Inman

Sitting Room.

Families with pre-school age children, please feel free to join other Tudor House families in the Tudor Nest

Playgroup on Friday mornings from 8.30am in the Dixon Library.

Thank you to the Leimroth family for generously donating a barbecue to Tudor House. Many thanks! We do love

BBQs at our School.

I hope the Tudor House Dads and special men in our students’ lives have a fantastic evening at their Father’s Day

Dinner tonight around the Meyer Bonfire. Happy Father’s Day Tudor House Dads!

With the Winter sports wrapping up this week for the year, I wanted to thank the coaches for all their hard work.

2018 IPSHA Athletics

On Wednesday 29th August, at 5am, a group of Tudor

House students and staff set off for the 2018 IPSHA

Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. We had 31

athletes completing in a range of events.

There were some wonderful results from the boys and girls

of Tudor House.

Starting with relays, our teams ran well. Our Junior Boys

won their race with a huge run from Tim Leahy to bring

them home. Eddie Savage won his 100m race. Theodore

Wilkins came third in his 100m. Archie McConnochie came

third in his 200m race. The other competitors participated

well for the entire day and I was very proud of them all.

Two students will be

competing in the CIS NSW

Athletics Carnival later in

September. Qualifying for

CIS is Phoenix Sparke who

competed in the Senior Boys

Long Jump with a jump of

4.20m and Tim Leahy who

threw 20.98m in the 8-10

discus.

A big thank you to Mrs Sharon Johnson and to our Gap Students, Hugo

Schreuder and Chelsey Grimes too for helping out on the day. I would also

like to thank Frank for driving the bus so safely to and from the venue.

Well done to all Tudor participants!!!

Tudor Ski Week 2018

Last week, I went skiing with 53 other Tudor House students. We had group skiing and snowboarding lessons at

Thredbo.

We arrived on Saturday and unpacked ready for lessons on Monday morning. There was a sea of red on the snow

as we walked across Friday Flats. I was appointed Team Captain!

I met up with my instructor, Dom and of course, the group. We had a lovely time shooting off jumps and

performing terrible stacks.

The next day, just as I was walking out the door, I tripped and cut my foot open because my boots were outside. I

had to rest that day and that was the first time I’ve felt sad getting the day off.

The rest of week was great

fun. Besides racing Harry

Lawson and smashing into a

big steal map of Thredbo and

crashing into the instructor,

we all learnt a lot and

developed our skills on the

snow.

It was a great trip and we

enjoyed making new friends

with everyone’s siblings.

Mrs Hayman is hoping lots of us will race next year after seeing how fast we are on the snow. It is so much fun

and I recommend Ski Week to everyone.

Year Four Student

Snowsports Report State Interschools

As I write this article, we have 10 members of our Snowsports

Team preparing to represent our School at the Australian

Championships. These students are heading to Perisher for four

days of competition next week. We wish them well and hope

there is lots of beautiful, fresh snow.

These students earnt their places in their events at Nationals after

qualifying at the State Championships at Thredbo in August.

During the week commencing the 20th August, 17 Tudor House boys represented our school at the NSW

Interschools State Championships in Snowsports. The Thredbo mountain slopes were awash with the Tudor House

red jackets and helmet covers! They participated in racing lessons specific to their discipline and competed in a

variety of events. The boys achieved some great results and not only developed their skills, but made lots of new

friends from The King’s School in their lesson groups.

Eddie Savage flew down the mountain competing in the DWA Alpine event and won his Division. He was very

brave and worked with an awesome guide! Top job Eddie and he is through to Nationals.

Our clever Div. 4 boys Team finished 6th in the Giant Slalom. Max Manka finished

5th, Phoenix Sparke 16th, Alfie Clark finished 41st and poor James chose the banana

boat to get down through the gates. Luckily, he didn’t break his leg!

In this same event, our Years 3 and 4 boys skied so well

and are through to Nationals! George Manka finished

7th, Harley Jones 26th, Val Bunda 34th and Miller

Twomey 45th.

The Years 3 and 4 boys competed in the Division 5 Skier

X on the last day. The boys did so well to keep it going

- it is an exhausting week of lessons and racing.

Congratulations to George who finished 12th, Miller

who finished 42nd and poor Val was disqualified for missing gates. The team finished

11th and George is through to Nationals. The Div. 4 boys also competed in Skier X.

Max Manka 8th, Phoenix Sparke 29th and Alfie Clark 31st. Hearty congratulations to

Max for making it through to Nationals in this discipline.

Just to keep us on our toes, we also had boys snowboarding. Well done to Max Manka (20th) and Cameron Gray

(35th) in the Snow Board Giant S today. Huge effort boys. Well done. George finished 23rd in Boarder Cross

(snowboard).

In the toughest gig of all, the Div. 5 Mogul boys came 5th and they are through to Nationals!

Super proud of George Manka (4th), Miller Twomey (28th) and Val Bunda (34th). Top job, boys in red! I have

decided I may become a Moguls judge….knees together and 360 degree sins at the end!

Hearty congratulations to our six boys who competed in Div. 4 Moguls: 11th Max Manka, 30th Alfie Clark, 31st

Boris Bunda, 35th Phoenix Sparke, 36th James Parry-Okeden and 41st Rich Estens. A super effort from our teams,

finishing 9th and 12th. Max Manka qualified for Nationals.

In the Division 5 Freestyle XC Race: 14th George Manka, 21st Val Bunda, 28th Lachie Noble, 30th Miller Twomey,

39th Harley Jones, 40th Oliver Estens and 41st Declan Twomey. Congratulations to George, qualifying for

Nationals.

In the Div. 5 Cross Country Relay, our mighty B Team finished 7th (Declan, Lachie and Val) and our A Team

finished 8th (George, Harley and Miller). Congratulations to all boys. Skiing 1.1km is hard work, especially uphill.

Huge effort from Lachie who is skiing up a division and made it into the team for Nationals with our B Team.

The older boys, with more experience in XC, raced superbly. Our Div. 4 A Team came 4th! Congratulations to Max,

Boris and Phoenix on a wonderful result! Our B Team (Alfie, Austin and Will) came 9th and our C team (Jack, Rich

and James) finished 11th. It was a terrific effort with the boys giving it their all.

A great Div. 4 XC Freestyle Race with equally awesome results: 4th Phoenix Sparke, 16th Max Manka, 18th Boris

Bunda, 26th Alfie Clark, 27th Will Gilbert, 38th Austin McLean, 39th James Parry-Okeden, 41st Rich Estens and

48th Jack Fuller.

An extraordinary week of sportsmanship, teamwork and friendship. I am so proud of our small team and their

successes. They represented our school admirably both on and off the mountain. Fingers crossed for another

fantastic week at nationals. Go Boys.

Extra-Curricular Equestrian Programme News

Term Four Enrolments now open

9 | P a g e

Rosthwaite Farm are now ready to accept enrolments for their Term Four Equestrian

programme. To facilitate our planning and scheduling, those children currently participating

and wishing to continue, will need to inform Miss Griffiths as soon as possible.

New enrolments should be emailed to Miss Griffiths now for a copy of Rosthwaite Farm’s

information package detailing their instructors, the riding school’s horses, expectations,

riding attire, fees and services offered. Rostwaithe Farm Riding School also offers agistment,

schooling rides and private lessons.

All fees are paid upfront at the beginning of each term. Please note that Term Four is only an

eight week term. Lessons are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays

from 4pm-5pm. Students are transported to lessons on the Tudor House bus. Parents collect

their children from the riding school at 5pm. We are always after parents who can assist in

returning riders that board to the Boarding House too.

Lessons are scheduled during Mid-Term break times. Parents are asked to transport their children to and from

lessons on these days. Rosthwaite Farm will not cancel lessons. However, if under exceptional circumstances this

happens, lessons will be made up as soon as possible. Your coach Chrissy Persson, will contact you directly if this

is ever the case. Please note that riding is generally an all-weather activity except in cases of severe meteorological

events.

Term Four commences on Monday 15th October and concludes with our Tudor House Prize

Day on Saturday December 8th. Term Four’s Mid-Term break is Monday 5th November.New

enrolments must fill in their waiver and enrolment documentation prior to commencing

lessons. All fees are paid up front and paperwork is returned to Miss Griffiths by email or

hard copy.

We also have a group of Tudor House mothers participating in a ‘Mothers’ Club’ on Tuesdays

and Thursdays. Please note, that you do not need to provide your own horse to participate.

If you require any further assistance or have queries regarding this programme, please

contact Miss Griffiths by email: [email protected]

Thank you for your interest and support in this new venture for Tudor House and Rosthwaite Farm. Giddy up.

PK Fathers’ Day Breakfast

It was such a treat to host the PK Dads on Wednesday morning for breakfast. The students had been busy

preparing placemats to decorate the tables as well as ‘bespoke’ ties in their Dad’s favourite colours.

The students entertained their super star guests with songs around the piano followed by a design and make

paper airplane challenge. The stakes were high as each ‘dynamic duo’ tested and modified their design!

Special thanks to Jamie and his team for treating us to the most delicious breakfast on a chilly winter’s morning

and to Mrs Grinham for the fabulous photographs.
