ASCS Mission Statement: Together we will, teach children to see the world through the eyes of Christ and to model the lives of the Saints in a rigorous

academic environment.

Today my attention turns to the piles of donated items, donor forms, multiple drafts of the auction booklet, raffle tickets, classroom items, teacher donations and the tireless and generous gift of time given to our Reach for the Stars Gala by a very small group of people. Two of the main “stars” of our auction also work full time for ASCS-Julie Rivera and Lesley Feudner. They are supported by a small but mighty auction committee. I don’t know that anyone is fully able to grasp the behind the scenes work that is done to pre-pare for this fun, engaging and fruitful event. The school auction is the one main fundraiser our school does and brings in approxi-mately $115,000. This money we raise is essential to a balanced budget. The money we raise helps teachers continue to do the work they do in the classroom. The money we raise assists families who otherwise can’t afford a Catholic education. This all hap-pens because of the generosity of our families, friends, local businesses, teachers, staff members and most importantly, Lesley Feudner and Julie Rivera. Right now, my desk, our office desks, the tables and floor space is pleasantly “cluttered” with auction donations. All of this needs to be logged into a system, catalogued and prepared for bidding. Then the items are handed off to a few other individuals who spend countless hours making them look appealing-Suzette Bilotti and Gloria Morrone. At this point, you may be asking “how I might be of help?” Sell raffle tickets, attend the auction, bid high and bid often! Last Thursday our faculty met for both a time of Lenten prayer and visioning for the future. The faculty identified the strengths of ASCS from their point of view. I would like to share with you the top 15.

1. Strong commitment to faith development of teachers, staff and students 2. We all work out of the same mission and the mission is known and implemented 3. Strong family commitment, great parents, grandparents and volunteers 4. We see the 3 campuses as one school 5. We build community across the three campuses through combined programs 6. We are strong in our relationships with one another as teachers/staff/administration 7. We have a rigorous curriculum 8. Parishes support us with a subsidy 9. We attend Mass weekly and keep holy the seasons with devotional prayer experiences 10. We utilize and incorporate in the school day the Virtues in Practice curriculum 11. We have a strong vision and commitment to the future 12. We are open to all students and have excellent student support teachers 13. We have a strong Principal 14. We are Catholic to the core 15. We have a very dedicated staff that is highly qualified, energetic, and passionate about academics

When I asked the faculty what is our greatest weakness? Money/resources/salaries/budget for classrooms I end by saying thank you to each one of you for the many ways you help us do the work we do. I also thank our teachers and staff members for being people of integrity and people of faith. Let’s all pray for a successful auction so we can turn our greatest weakness into a strength! Eighth grade students are learning about the anatomy of vertebrates, specifically cartilaginous fish, such as a shark. Recently they

dissected spiny dogfish sharks to locate and identify the different organs and practice their skills of dissecting, observing, compar-

ing and contrasting. Did you know a shark's heart consists of only two chambers, while a human's has four?

On Wednesday, March 15th, select students from South campus took part in our Annual Modern Wood-

men school speech contest in Bell Hall. This year's topic was "What Does it Mean to be a Hero."

The student finalists from grades 5 through 8 gained an opportunity to demonstrate their public speak-

ing skills by presenting their speeches before their peers (4th-8th graders) and a distinguished panel of

judges.

Thank you to the South campus judges: Mr. Karl Wertzler, General Manager of

WIIL/WLIP/WXLC/WKRS Radio, Mrs. Peggy Concannon, retired educator, and Mr. Alan Pad-

lock of Ocean Spray, Inc. and thank you to our emcees Julia B. and Lexie B.

Congratulations to the following finalists: 5th graders Abbey Z. and Audrey M., 6th graders

Drue D. and Leo R., 7th graders Taylor W. and John C. (2nd Place), 8th graders Mia P. (1st

Place) and Abigail H. (3rd Place).

They each delivered his/her well-organized speech with great poise, confidence, and style. The after-

noon proved to be an elocutionary delight!
