First Quarter Review
School Newsletter
Our first quarter has come to an end for the 2019-2020 school year. So many great things happening in the Alta-
Aurelia School District. We have had an excellent start to our school year. I want to thank both our students and
staff for all they do to make this school district a great place to work and go to school. We were not without our
challenges this quarter.
We had a sewer issue and a water main break at our Alta Building that caused some missed academic time. Our stu-
dents, staff and families responded like true professionals. These are not things that we have control over. We do not
want to miss academic time and we realize that this can cause additional stress on our families. Please understand
that none of these issues are planned and we do everything we can to maintain our buildings and grounds.
Our homecoming festivities were nothing short of outstanding. The week was capped off with our parade and pep
rally that many people from our community attended. Really showed the pride that both of our communities have
for our school district. Nothing but positive reviews from many of our community members.
I want to thank all of our new staff that joined the Alta-Aurelia family this year. All of them have had a very posi-
tive start to the school year. We are glad that you made the choice to be a part of the A-A family.
The year is just getting started for everyone. Check us out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and stay caught up
with some of the excellent activities that our staff and students are doing in our school district. Don’t forget to at-
tend parent teacher conferences on November 12th and 14th. Your input on your child’s education is important to
us. Check your calendars and announcements for all the upcoming events.
Winter weather is coming and always leaves us with the possibility of a late start or school cancelation. Messages
will be available on JMC, radio, social media and local TV stations. We will post any of these announcements as
soon as we are able so that our families can plan accordingly.
Have a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving!

Veteran’s Day Programs in Alta and Aurelia The Alta-Aurelia School District would like to welcome all Veterans and their families to attend our programs on
Monday, November 11th. The program in ALTA will start with complimentary coffee and rolls for all veterans and
families beginning at 8:15 am in the High School Commons. The formal program in Alta will begin at 9:00am in the
high school gymnasium. The program in AURELIA will begin at 11:00am in the middle school gymnasium. We
would like to thank and honor all veterans and families of veterans on this special day. Thank You for your ser-
vice.
On Tuesday October 15th two Alta-Aurelia FFA members attended Greenhand Fire Up
at Northwestern College in Orange City. At the event district and state officers lead four
interactive workshops for first year high school FFA members, also known as Green-
hands, for the annual Greenhand Fire Up Conference. The workshops facilitated were
leadership focused with an emphasis on the experiences that occur in the lives of begin-
ning high school students
The officers prepared and facilitated workshops of: authenticity, balancing priorities,
communication, and FFA opportunities – in order to provide the first-year FFA mem-
bers with skills they would use both within and outside of FFA. The goal was to engage
FFA members in learning about the tools that would allow them to be successful in any-
thing they are part of through high school and beyond.
Members who attended for our chapter were Katie Bryant and Kyler Mattson!
FFA News
Plant Science Class The high school plant science class helped the city of Alta plant 28 new trees around town. These trees were given to the city by Trees Forev-
er. With the recent outbreak of Emerald Ash Borer, many trees have been damaged or killed. So on Tuesday, October 8th, seven students
helped the city plant the new trees. The plant science class will be in charge of watering two of the trees, located on the north end of the foot-
ball field. We are responsible for making sure they receive 10 gallons of water each week until the ground freezes at least 6 inches deep.
Students include: Kash Pedersen, Brock Mier, Schade Larson, Alex DeRoos, Abbie Watts. Kneeling: Brandon Mier, Makayli Snyder.

Alta Library Upcoming Events in November
Heartland Honor Choir On Oct. 24 several AA students participated in the Heartland Honor Choir in Estherville, at ILCC. The day was spent rehearsing and ended
with a concert that evening. The following students participated in this event: Grace Arnts, Lydia Feis, Piper Graham, Kyla Galvin, Abby
Johnson, Laynie Knecht, Abigail Marcos, Tegan Owens, Cass Parks, Karla Chicas, Kim Weflen, Kaysha Brown, Alexis Williams, Simon
Carlson, Daniel Langner, Brennan Shea and Caden Shea. The guest conductor for the choir was Ryan Person, Director of Choral Activities
at Morningside College. The songs they rehearsed and performed for the concert were: Ipharadisi, arr. By Brad Richmond, I Know I’ve
Been Changed, arr. By Christopher Aspaas, The Garten Mother’s Lullaby, arr. By Neil Ginsberg and The Promised Land, by Drew Collins.
It was a great day of music, fun and making new friends!

This year all-state auditions were held in LeMars, Iowa. After three all-state camps the students were ready for their auditions. It is a long
journey that always improves the students’ musicianship as well as leadership. The following students auditioned Saturday, Oct. 26. Sierra
Hill, Caden Shea, Abigail Marcos, Tegan Owens, Brian Banwell, Grace Arnts and Lucas McKenzie. After auditions they waited for recalls. If
they were recalled they had another audition and the list of the students that made all-state was posted at the end of the day. There were 5
songs they learned, and at 5am the morning of auditions the cuts from the songs was posted so they knew exactly what the audition consisted
of. So proud of the students that auditioned!
Band students who auditioned for All-State included: Joelle Arnts (flute), Jana Jessup (flute), Simon Carlson (oboe), Victoria Gustafson (bari
sax), and Elizabeth Gustafson (percussion). Students prepared a solo excerpt, two etudes, and all major scales. Etudes were released on July
25; after 3 months of hard work each student was able to give a great audition and learned immensely from the process. We are proud of all of
the Warriors who auditioned and are excited about their growth through the audition process!
Music All-State Try Outs
Tribe time is a 25 minute period in the morning where the middle school students are placed in either an intervention group or extension
group. During this time the students receive assistance in math and/or reading or they share in activities chosen by the extension teacher.
These intervention and extension groups are flexible and frequently change so students are moving in and out of the different tribes.
Barb Huseman’s 7th and 8th graders were given the opportunity to come up with an idea for their tribe (extensions) and were asked to think
outside the box. Ms. Huseman found projects they could do to make them more aware of the importance of helping others through acts of
kindness. (Empathy in action.)
The activities/projects the students have participated in her tribe last year and this year:
Making baby bibs for moms in need
Weaving stocking caps
Rolling bandages for medical missionary teams
Weaving sleeping mats for the homeless
Learning to sew on buttons
Learning to hem pants
These small acts of kindness create feelings of self-worth and belonging for our stu-
dents. Acts of kindness increase energy and give a wonderful feeling of optimism. In-
creased feelings of gratitude – children learn to appreciate what they have when helping
those less fortunate according to Psychology Today (Nov 16, 2017).
Pictures show students weaving hats and peg looming mats for the homeless.

Past Alta Library Events After School Movie
Children enjoyed the movie “Toy Story 4”, on October 13th at the Alta Community Library.
Apron Program
On September 24th Sheila Craig presented a program “Remembering the Apron” at the Alta
Community Library. Her collection included aprons made of all kinds of material ranging
from flour sacks, handkerchiefs to fine material.
Many of the aprons were decorated with everything from chicken scratch, cross stitch smock-
ing and more. It was amazing to see the kinds of aprons and how they were used.
Sheila is a retired University of Minnesota Extension Educator from Preston, Minnesota, origi-
nally from Decorah, Iowa. She is married and has two grown sons and their wives, and two
grandsons.
Costume Party
On Friday, October 25th the library held its Annual Costume Party. The children started the
evening by having their pictures taken in front of a Charlie Brown backdrop. Then they pro-
ceeded to the coloring center, progressing on to the pumpkin weight guessing center and finally
to the funny feeling center. The evening ended by providing children with bags to put their
glow stick bracelets, activity booklets, coloring pages and safety tip ideas to take home.

Alta-Aurelia High School Presents “Willy Wonka”
Alta-Aurelia High School presents Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka on November 8th and 9th at 7:00pm and the10th
at 2:00pm. All seats are $5 and can be reserved by calling 200-1331.
Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka follows enigmatic candy manufacturer, Willy Wonka, as he stages a contest by hid-
ing golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free
tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats: the fifth is a likeable
young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow
