St Joseph's Day This Thursday On St Joseph's Day, this Thursday 19th March, we are gathering as a school to celebrate this very special feast day. There will be a short liturgy at 9.10am after which the children will return to their classrooms to spend the morning focusing on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After recess the children will be breaking up into multiage groups to complete activities focusing on St Joseph who lived his life in service to others. St Joseph is the patron saint of our school and Parish. We pray to Saint Joseph to guide and protect us and our families. Saint Joseph is also very important to Italian Communities. Here at St Joseph's School we study the Italian culture and language. It is therefore fitting that we take on board some of the St Joseph Day customs. Everyone is invited to wear red on Thursday. This will highlight our love of St Joseph and his passion of caring for others.

Please Remember To Wear Red Thursday And Celebrate This Special Day

Sacrament of Reconciliation Ceremony Our Reconciliation candidates will make their First Reconciliation this Thursday, 19th March at St. Joseph’s Church, in a Second Rite beginning at 7pm. Candidates are asked to bring their Baptism candle, or any candle, and wear their white stole. All school families are welcome to attend this celebration and receive reconciliation or a blessing from Father.

Sacrament of Confirmation An information meeting for the Sacrament of Confirmation is to be held on Wednesday 15th April in the St. Ita’s school Hall, Drouin, at 7.00pm. This meet-ing is for families who wish to have their child continue their journey of initia-tion into the life of the Catholic Church Community of St. Joseph’s through the Sacrament of Confirmation. To receive Confirmation children must have previ-ously celebrated the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and First Eucharist and be in grade 6. Children and parents are asked to attend this meet-ing. The actual date for Confirmation still needs to be finalised, but will be to-wards the end of May or beginning of June. A note will be sent home in the near

future. For more information contact Liz on 5623 1642 or see Mr Thompson at school. In Literacy, across the school we are renewing our focus on Writing. Many teachers throughout all levels of the school have been participating in professional development to keep them informed of contempo-rary practice in the teaching and learning of writing. February samples of children’s Narrative writing have been collected. We are noting where the children are at in terms of their writing development and planning and teaching for further progress. A June and November Narrative sample will also be collected to track progress and to inform teaching and learning. One approach to writing that some teachers have engaged with of recent times has been an approach developed by David Hornsby and Deborah Sukarna who have researched and practiced the teaching and learning of writing across varied settings and age groups for several years. The approach to writing begins with a ‘seed’, be it a photograph, artefact, movie clip, postcard, a book or art piece. The ‘seed’ provides the stimulus for discussion before writing. It may remind the writer of an experience they have had, raise questions about a topic to research or stimulate thinking about creating a story around the seed. The writer decides on the genre (format/style of writing) eg. letter, report, flow chart, the writing’s pur-pose eg. to entertain, inform or persuade, whilst considering it’s audience. There is much for a young writer to think about when the writing is undertaken. Planning and drafting are taught and used to pro-duce a quality piece. Not all pieces developed need to be published, that is the writer’s decision. Children are encouraged to always have an active piece of writing underway. This approach to writing can be encouraged to be undertaken at home, as children have different experi-ences with their families, they can collect a number of ‘seeds’ for purposeful and enjoyable writing. Seeing adults write and hearing about their experiences of writing also teaches children valuable lessons about their own writing.
