Important Dates for 2017 Calendar: School Staff return for Term 1, 2017 on 30th January 2017 All students Foundation to Year 6 return on 31st January 2017 Term 1- 2017 30th January – 31st March Term 2-2017 18th April- 30th June Term 3 17th July- 22nd September Term 4 9th October- 22nd December EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. His information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement. Please be aware from March 1st 2014, new federal government laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason. If you are having attendance issues with your child, please inform your child’s teacher so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

Sharing the Planet

On Monday, 7th of November all the Grade 3 and 4 students went on an excursion. We went to Ecolinc as part of our PYP Unit of Inquiry “Changes in the environment impact living things”. We left at 9’oclock and headed to the bus out the front of the school.

When we arrived at Ecolinc, we began the day by learning all about the different plants. We identified plants that are beneficial or harmful for the frogs. Carol explained some plants grow on land and some grow in water. We also learnt about the Typha plant. When you open the Typha there will be millions of seeds. A plant that is beneficial for the Tadpole is Algae. The Kangaroo Grass and Flax Lily plants are beneficial for frogs to put their eggs in, as the long plants mean predators aren’t able to hunt them. When we went outside to the wetlands. We listened to the different types of frogs we could hear. There was the Pobblebonk frog, which made the sound “Bonk… Bonk” and the other one we heard was the Southern Tree Frog which made a “Creeeeee cree cree cree” noise.

After lunch, we learnt about frog’s life cycle with Bob. Frogs start off as eggs, which hatched into Tadpoles. Tadpoles then develop their front legs and then their back legs (these legs can help them hop around). Finally, they turn into frogs. We learnt about the frog life cycle. We learnt about the different ponds. If the pond dries up the frog, will move to another pond. We then got to see tadpoles in the ponds ourselves. If you fish out some tadpoles you will find algae, but if you keep put it in a tray it will be green because of the algae.

Next we learnt about the different frogs species and their calls. We learnt what noise each type of frog makes. Using musical instruments we made each of the frog’s noises. Frogs only call to their species and aren’t interested in communicating to other types of frogs.

The last activity was looking different types of aquatic macroinvertebrates collected from the pond in the wetlands. Using microscopes we found many different animals. We found snails, sea shrimp, tadpoles, worms and water mites. Some were big and some were so small you could only see them with a microscope.

We all had a fantastic day at Ecolinc and learnt lots about animals, especially frogs! We all hope that we can come back next year!

Dear Parents

This year, Glenroy West Primary School will be holding our annual concert. The title for

this year’s concert is Glenroy West: A Learner’s Journey through the Decades. All

songs through the decades have a link to our IB PYP Program Learner Profile

Attributes/Attitudes.

Each class has chosen their decade and song and are working tirelessly to get everything

into place! The students have also worked cooperatively with one another to choose their

costumes. The songs, costumes and PYP links are all listed below. Some of the costumes

will be drawn and painted on. Students will need to have their costumes organised,

ready and brought to school by Monday November 21st, especially those grades who

will be painting their t-shirts.

Thank you for your support and all students are looking forward to showing you the great work that they have done. Regards, Samantha Marr

Dear Families, We have had another busy week in the BASC Program. This week the children have enjoyed helping out a lot more when cooking and also engaging in some new activities. Children brought in some activities from home to share with others and teach each other new things. The children were able to learn new ways of knitting with only a paper cup, hair pins and wool. They all watched and worked together to create their own knitting cup to use to do some knitting. Families have taken the time to do some spring cleaning at home and have kindly donated some unwanted toys. The children have loved exploring their imaginative play as they use the new barbie van in fun adventures role playing stories and events. Others have used their time to help and learn more about cooking and preparing food. Some children have shown a lot of enthusiasm and interest in helping me prepare afternoon tea so I've shown them specific ways to do things. The children learnt about certain ways of measuring quantities of food, organising cooking spaces and time management. It has been lovely watching the children explore their new interests and absorb and repeat these skills. We look forward to seeing you in the BASC Program. From Nicki
