S U P E R I N T E N D E N T ’ S V I E W P O I N T

by Susan Wakefield, Superintendent

It’s a new year and with a new year comes new staff, new programs, and new op-portunities. This fall, we will have 14

new teachers, a new high school counselor, a new food service director, a new middle school secretary, a new pool director and many new students. We are happy to wel-come them to PCS and excited to see what each of them will bring to our district. On the technology front, we continue to move forward. We have a new Student In-formation System and Gradebook database called Infinite Campus. This new program will look different than the prior program but will still provide the same access to at-tendance and grades. An important note is that access to the attendance and grade-book portals will not be available to par-ents and students at the beginning of the year. We need to ensure the integrity of the programming before we open the portals publicly – meaning we need to ensure that the student information is aligned with the correct parental information. As soon as we

are confident that the data is accurate, we will open those portals. You can expect an announcement on our website when the gradebook and attendance sites are avail-able for you to use. Our 1-to-1 technology plan is also mov-ing forward. We have added iPads to a third class at the high school so ¾ of our high school students now have their own iPad. At the middle school, we have added three classroom sets of Chromebooks and we are enhancing our technology curriculum across the district. Finally, there are so many opportunities for students that there is always something new to try. Be daring kids and get involved in something whether it’s volunteer work, clubs, music, or athletics. Some very im-portant lessons learned in school occur out-side the traditional classroom - and you’ll have fun! We are so looking forward to another fan-tastic year. See you soon! n

With that title you might think we’re planning to add Latin to our curricu-lum. But this article isn’t about curric-

ulum; it’s about something far more important to our primary mission as a school – which is our commitment in Plainwell to excellent teach-ing. That Latin phrase Ars Longa, Vita Brevis is the first phrase in a famous classical text by Hip-pocrates, considered the father of medicine. Hippocrates and his school of physicians lived in ancient Greece and were the first group to treat healing and medicine in a scientific and systematic way basing their treatments on obser-vations, years of study, reading notes and texts,

and consulting others. A far cry from the then current view of healing as something magical and superstitious. The phrase Ars Longa, Vita Brevis translates as this: Life is Short, Art is Long. By saying life is short, art is long, Hippocrates meant that a physicians career is short (40 years perhaps) and it is impossible for a doctor to learn everything he needs to know about the art of medicine – the craft, the skill of medicine just from his own experience. In order to successful-ly treat patients, a doctor must have a great deal of learning from others through books and con-sultation not only before she begins her prac-tice but throughout her entire career. Successful doctors aren’t done with learning from experts and texts when they finish medical school and begin their practice; they must study and learn throughout their entire careers. As we wind up over fifteen days of teacher training that we did this August, I am reminded of that phrase. For teachers, like doctors, life is short and their art – the art and craft of teach-ing - is long. A teaching career is short – maybe 30 to 40 years, but the art of teaching – the skill and craft and knowledge it takes to master it cannot be learned in a lifetime career. No more than a doc-tor can, successful teachers cannot walk out of college and teach the rest of their careers just on their own experience, just by “learning by doing.” It takes a lifetime of reading, consult-

ing peers, watching others, and learning from experts to even come close to mastering the art and craft of teaching. Like doctors, teachers al-ways have more to learn based on new research and new observations of what is working. I can personally attest to this. After 35 years, I continue to learn new, more effective ways to teach students every year through reading, at-tending presentations by experts and practitio-ners, and by watching accomplished Plainwell teachers. It is a privilege that part of my job here is to be able to share that knowledge with others through teacher coaching and setting up or supporting district workshops on proven techniques to improve teaching and learning – workshops such as Quantum Learning, Explicit Instruction, Effective Teaching, Capturing Kids’ Hearts, Response to Intervention, and Mindset. I am proud of the exemplary professional learn-ing and development that we provide teachers in this district to support them in continually re-fining and expanding their craft and skill. Like a doctor, a teacher is never done with learning new things to make them better at their pro-fession. As Hippocrates said almost 2,400 years ago is true today: Life is Short, Art is Long. No matter how long you teach (or no matter how long you practice medicine) you will be learn-ing your whole career. This community should be proud that Plainwell teachers work extremely hard to grow more skillful in serving our stu-dents every year of their career. n

This fall we will be rolling out a new student informa-tion system called Infinite Campus. We are excited about improving the technology that houses all student

household demographic information as well as schedules, grades and transcripts. Due to the complexity of the data transfer and necessity of ensuring the integrity of the data, the parent/student portal that allows you to view gradebooks and attendance records will not be available to you at the beginning of the school year. We need to test the data to confirm that student information is linked correctly. We anticipate that this work will take sev-eral weeks to complete after the start of the school year. When the portal becomes available, we will post a notice on the web-site. During that time, we encourage you to email your child’s teacher with any questions you may have regarding school work and attendance. It is important for us to protect your privacy and give you accurate information. Therefore, we appreciate your patience during this transition. n

Starr Elementary is the only district school receiving Title 1 funds. Request for teacher or paraprofessional qualifications should be made in writing to the Starr Elementary principal. In addition, parents shall be notified of the level of achievement of their child on required state academic assess-ments and be given timely notice if their child is assigned to a teacher who has not achieved NCLB highly qualified status or if the child is taught for more than four weeks by a teacher who has not achieved highly quali-fied status.

ADVISORY TO ALL PARENTSPlainwell Community Schools has adopted an Integrated Pest Manage-ment program. Inherent with this are the District’s efforts to reduce pes-ticide use as much as possible. While it may occasionally be necessary to apply a pesticide, these will only be used as a last resort. This program does not rely on routine pesticide applications to resolve problems. We use various techniques such as habitat alteration, sanitation, mechanical means, exclusion, etc. to prevent pests from becoming a problem. You will receive advanced notice of the application of a pesticide, other than bait or gel formulations at your child’s school. This advance notice of the application will be given 48 hours before the application. The law requires us to do this notification by using two methods. The first method required by law is the posting at the primary entrances to your child’s school. The entrances that will be posted are those entrances that have a sidewalk that leads directly to a parking lot. The second method we are going to use is the posting in a common area located by the main office of the school. SAFE & DRUG FREE SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIESPlainwell Community Schools recognizes and abides by the standards of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug Free Workplace Act.These standards prohibit the unlawful manufacture, possession, use, sale, distribution, or concealment of illegal drugs and alcohol in school programs, school vehicles, school premises, and at school sponsored ac-tivities on and off school property. Drugs include all controlled substances as defined by law, as well as “look-alike” drugs, steroids, and alcohol. These standards apply to all Plainwell Community Schools’ students and staff. The use/abuse of drugs and alcohol poses serious health and safety risks to Plainwell Community Schools’ students. We urge students, parents, guardians, and care providers to work hand-in-hand with our district to ensure that these important standards are upheld.

STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE WITH FEDERAL LAWThe Plainwell Community School district complies with applicable federal and state laws prohibiting discrimination, including Title IX of the Educa-tion Amendments of 1972 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It is the policy of the school district that no person on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability status, genetic information & testing, Family & Medical Leave, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, or veteran status shall be discriminated against in employment or educational programs and activities. In order to coordinate compliance activities and investigate complaints charging discrimination, the school district has appointed Superintendent Susan Wakefield as Civil Rights Coordinator.Inquiries, complaints, or grievances should be addressed to the Civil Rights Coordinator, 600 School Drive, Plainwell, Michigan, 49080-1595, phone (269) 685-5823.

FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACTEach year the Plainwell Community Schools is required to notify parents or students of rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA affords parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the student’s education

records. These rights are:Right to Inspect: The right to inspect and review substantially all of the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the school receives a request for access. Parents or eligible students should submit to the school principal (or appropriate school official) a written request that iden-tifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The school official will make ar-rangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. This right extends to par-ents under 18 years of age and to any dependent student age 18 or older.Right to Request Amendment: The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Parents or eligible students may ask the school to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the school principal (or appropriate official), clearly identifying the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the school will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing.Right to Prevent Disclosures: The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception which permits disclosure without consent is dis-closure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the school as an administrator, supervi-sor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the school board; a person or company with whom the school has contracted to per-form a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); to a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his/her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his/her professional responsibility. [NOTE: FERPA requires a school district to make a reasonable attempt to notify the parent of eligible student of the records request unless it states in its annual notification that it intends to forward records on request.]Right to Complain: The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the school to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that admin-isters FERPA is: Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Edu-cation, 400 Maryland Avenue SW, Washington DC 20202-4605.Right to Obtain Policy: Parents have the right to obtain a copy of the policy adopted by the Board of Education in compliance with FERPA. A copy may be obtained in person or by mail from: Susan Wakefield, Superintendent, Plainwell Community Schools.Right to Object to Release of Directory Information: Generally, school of-ficials must have written permission from the parent of a student or an eligible student before releasing any information from a student’s record. However, FERPA allows school districts to disclose, without consent, “directory” type information. The Board of Education of the Plainwell Community Schools has designated the following personally identifiable information contained in a student’s education record as “directory infor-mation;” student’s name, participation in officially recognized activities and sports; height and weight if a member of an athletic team; dates of attendance; awards received; honor rolls and scholarships. The district will make such “directory” type information available upon a legitimate request, unless a parent, guardian, or adult student notifies the district in writing within 10 days of receipt of this notice. The written ob-jection should list all types of information about the student to be excluded from directory information. The same notification requirement applies to high school students who do not want directory information released to military recruiters.Upon such written objection, this information will not be released without the prior consent of the parent or eligible student. If no objection to disclo-sure is made, student names, photographs and directory information may also be posted on the school district’s website.

Your objections should be addressed to:

A Note from the New Plainwell Pool Director:ANDREA MURPHY

Hello! My name is Andrea Murphy and I am excited to be the new Pool Direc-tor for Plainwell Schools! I graduated from Plainwell High School in 2001.

I was a swimmer in the Plainwell Trojan Aquatic Club from my elementary years all the way through high school. I also swam for the PHS swim team all four year and I would help coach the Trojan Aquatic Club during high school and summers when I was home from college. I went on to swim at Albion College all four years and studied Physical Education with a minor in Geology. After college, I coached Hackett Catholic Central Women’s Swim Team. I was the Aquatic Director at Al-

legan High School for four years, head coach of the men’s and women’s swim team for six years, and head coach of their club team for three years. I have a six-year old daughter who attends and loves Gilkey Elementary. My family and I have been part of the swim community for years! My mother, Sue, has been the Pool Aide for 15 years. I am thrilled to be back working in the community where I started my career in swim and coaching. n
