Nursery school and kindergarten

• Children in Albania attend nursery school from 0 to 3.

• Nursery school can be public or private. After nursery school there is the kindergarten from 3 to 6.

Elementary school and middle school• Elementary school is for 4 years from

6 to 10. During elementary school,students learn 2 languages that theycan choose between English, French,Italian and Spanish. At the end ofelementary school students have todo an exam

• The secondary school in Albania(since 2008) lasts 5 years. During themiddle school students study newsubjects: History, Geography,Economics, 2 foreign languages andVisual Education. At the end there isanother exam.

High school and University• High school lasts 4 years

while in Italy lasts 5 years,then there are professionalinstitutes that last 3 years. Atthe end of high schoolstudents take an exam.During the High School thereare study grants for worthystudents.

• For the admission toUniversity, students have tosubmit all the votes of theprevious years and if theyare good they can frequentthe University otherwisethey are rejected. In Albaniathere aren’t many choices foruniversity faculty.

• In Albania, schoolsand private schoolsare very popularbecause peoplethink they are betterthan public schools.

Colleges and private schools • Students can start attending

colleges after the kindergartenuntil the high school. They learnthe same things of public schoolsbut they study 2 more foreignlanguages. There are someoptional courses : Art, Greek,Latin and I.T. Weekly stay isrequired until Saturday.

• In private institutes it is taughtand spoken first foreignlanguage for two hours a dayevery day. There are privateschools English, German,Turkish and Italian. In theseschools the Albanian is taught asa second language but for 3hours a week.

Interview to C.’s mum • How was the school system?

• When I was younger there were 4 years for elementary school and 4 years for middle school these 8 years were called in Albanian: TETVIEÇARE.

• What did you study?

• During elementary school I studied Math, Geography, History, Albanian, English and P.E., then at the middle school I began to study Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

• How many teachers did you have?

• At the elementary school I had a teacher for all subjects, but at the middle school I had a teacher for each subject.

• Did you have tests?

• Yes but I had tests. One of the most important test was a test for calligraphy, we had it very often.

• What is a test for calligraphy?

• It was for children who learned to write, it had to stimulate them to do better. The students had a notebook only for this.

• What did you do different than us today?

• In the morning before going to school every teacher made his class do gymnastics for about twenty minutes, then we walked in line to school.

• Did you practice sport?

• Yes, I played volleyball at school from the first year of the elementary school to the last year of High school and I was the captain of my team.

• What were the rules in your school?

• In my school there weren’t a lot of rules but the few were very strict, in fact it was forbidden to have long nails, makeup, wear shoes with heels, but during school events it was possible to make an exception to the rule.

• What subjects did you study?

• I studied all the subjects but I studied Russian rather than English because I was at the Military Academy

• How old were you when you went to the Academy?

• When I was to the Academy, I was only 13 years old, I finished TETVIEÇARE and I started to attend the Militar Academy.

• What subjects did you study in the Academy?

• In the Academy I studied all subjects but in particular I studied the history of wars and weapons and other military subjects.

• Did you train in the Academy?

• We woke up at 4:30 in the morning and after wearing the uniform we started running, then we went to school for 4 hours of lessons and after lunch we trained with weapons and physical exercises . In the afternoon we did 4 hours of lessons again.

• Could you leave the Academy?

• No, it was forbidden, I needed a special permission.

• What about the organization of the Accademy?

• We were divided in companies according to the age.

• Each company was divided into 10 groups and each group had a leader and each commander had a non-commissioned officer (I was one of them), but the whole company had a commander.

• Did you do exams?

• I did tests and theory exams so I enjoyed firing tests

• according to the score obtained by firing there was a mark

I love Albania even though I rarely go there and I am proud of having Albanian origins and being born in Italy.
