Glenys from Approach Too said, “The children have worked really hard over the year on the book. Four to 11 year olds are challenged to borrow and read any six library books during the summer holidays, a time when chil - dren’s literacy skills tradi- tionally dip. Tony Ross, the UK’s best- selling children’s illustra- tor (creator of the Little Princess books, illustrator of the Horrid Henry series by Francesca Simon, and of books by David Walliams and Claire Balding), has created this year’s exclu- sive artwork. Sue Wilkinson, CEO of The Reading Agency, which organises the Summer Reading Challenge country- wide said: “At The Reading Agency, we believe that everything changes when we read and we know from our research how much fun families and children have when taking part in the Challenge. This year we hope the wonderful char - acters created for us by Tony Ross will inspire more children than ever to take part and make use of their local library throughout the summer and beyond.” To take part, all children need to do is to head to their local library where they will be given a col - lector folder to keep a record of their reading journey. As children read at least six library books over the summer, they collect stickers which will help them crack the clues and help the Animal Agents find out what’s really been going on behind the scenes! On 18th July a record number of parks and green spaces in Ferryhill proudly collected Green Flag Awards. Mainsforth Sports Complex, King George V Playing Field, Surtees Doorstep Green and Duncombe Cemetery have all been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as being some of the very best in the World. The recreation facilities and cemetery are among a record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environ-mental standards, is beau-tifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.Councillor John Lindsay, Mayor of Ferryhill said: “Ferryhill Town Council is absolutely delighted to receive Green Flag Awards for four of its sites. Mains-forth Sports Complex,

Surtees Doorstep Green and Duncombe Cemetery have now managed to retain this award for several years which is ex-cellent news. For the King George V Playing Field to also receive the Award is extra special, as the site had previously failed to meet the Green Flag standards. With almost £90,000 having been invested in the site in 2016 it is great to know that the hard work of all the staff, without whom none of these achievements could be possible, has finally paid off.“We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and

visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining these sites to such a high standard.” International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. “Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these chal-lenging times, demon-strates just how much parks matter to people.”

Mainsforth Sports Complex is just one of the Ferryhill locations to be awarded Green Flag status.

is a fun and engaging way for children to continue their reading through the holidays, when tradition-ally books are not always high priority. Our libraries offer a wide range of activ-ities through the holidays for children and we would encourage parents to make use of these free facilities

The next meeting of the Ferryhill History Society will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 26th July at the Eldon Arms, Ferryhill Station. The speaker will be Jonathan Rush with his talk; The Reception of Irish Immigrants in the

Chilton Council has received concerns about riders exercising horses on Joe’s field, which is located at the top of the 5 rows (Albert & Arthur Street, Prospect Terrace).A spokesperson for the Council stated, “Whilst this field is for recreation it must be noted that there are goal posts on site thus allowing people to play

football. Therefore, to prevent any potential ac-cidents or damage to the field, the Town Council would appreciate if riders refrained from exercising horses on this site.“Any queries or concerns please call into the Town Council office or telephone 01388 721788, or alterna-tively email: [email protected].”

The 2017 enamel poppy badges are available now from Ferryhill Town Hall.

Limited edition poppy on sale now

The areas of Flanders and Picardy saw some of the most appalling fighting of World War I. There was complete dev-astation. Where homes, farms and countryside had been, a sea of mud and carnage engulfed everything. One thing, however did survive each year: the warm weather brought up poppies. Their vibrant colour in this

mud and desolation gave heart and hope to the soldiers fighting in the trenches: and so the poppy became a symbol of hope and reassurance. The poppy became rec-ognised as an important reminder of the war and in Britain under the guidance of Major George Howson MC, a small group of disabled servicemen started to make artificial poppies.

So the Poppy Appeal as we know it spread from small beginnings into the powerful and success-ful movement that it is today. All money raised by the appeal still goes to help serving and ex-service-men and their wives and their dependants in times of need through the Royal British Legion’s Benevolent Fund. This year the 2017 enamel poppy badges will be on sale from the Town Hall and are a restricted issue and therefore will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis and are available now. Anyone wishing to purchase a badge should do so at their earliest convenience.

Dear Editor,Immanuel Christian Fellowship would like to thank all parents, children, Councillors and members of the public who attended the Launch of Rainbow Tots on Friday 16th June. We would also like to say a special thank you to Mr & Mrs Gibson for their kind donation of £100 towards the project. Rainbow Tots will continue to run every Wednesday morning 9.30am – 11am and every Friday afternoon from 1pm - 2.30pm at The Dean Bank & Ferryhill Literary Institute. All Sessions are free and suitable for children aged 0-4 and will be open to children aged 0-12 during school holidays. Come along and have some fun!Kind Regards, Richard Smith.

Dear Editor,Chilton Primary Friends would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who sponsored and supported the Hawaiian Walk on 7th July. You have helped to raise the grand total of £1943.72. This money will go towards sending the children of Chilton Primary to the pantomime. So please support us in all our future fundraisers and hopefully we will reach our final goal.

Thank you, Hazel Coulthard.

Dear Editor,Members and officers of the Town Council are disappointed that once again Chilton Town Council are receiving concerns about grass cutting and associated works that livin are responsible for. Concerns include poor standard of grass cutting, not being cut frequently enough, large mounds of grass left after cutting causing an eyesore for residents, grass cut unevenly and even patches not cut at all. Also concerns that some tenants have restricted access to their properties through windows and gates which are obstructed by trees and bushes. This is a serious problem for tenants who have mobility issues and need access for wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

These concerns were discussed at length at the Council meeting on 13th June 2017. Members requested a letter to be sent to livin high-lighting the problems and for feedback for an appropriate resolution. Also copied into the letter was Councillor Christine Potts and Coun-cillor Brian Stephen, Durham CC Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood and Local Partnerships. We have since been advised to forward these concerns to our local MP, Mr Phil Wilson as he is looking into issues relating to livin. Last year similar problems were reported and a letter was sent to livin highlighting the concerns but unfortunately livin didn’t respond. Residents are assured that whilst these concerns do not come under the remit of the Town Council we have forwarded them. Any problems relating to livin should be forwarded directly to them not the Town Council.

Paul Gray, Chilton Town Clerk.

Letters Have your say...

Dear Editor,

Regarding the letter in last week’s Chapter, name and address withheld, Ferryhill Town Council would like to respond as follows: The proposed works to fence off football pitches at Dean Bank Park, which are pre-dominantly used by youth football teams at grassroots level, is being progressed following a large scale community consultation exercise. This has included a questionnaire being delivered to all households in Dean Bank, meetings with user groups and following two public meetings held at Dean Bank Literary Institute. Among other things the consultation identified a major problem relating to dog fouling and the failure of irresponsible dog owners to clean up after their pets.Ferryhill Town Youth Football Club totally supports the Town Council over this initiative. The Club have long endured pitches being covered in dog faeces, which has invariably jeopardised planned games. The huge disappointment cancelling matches causes young players and their families, who have turned up to support them, is not something that should ever happen. With complaints having also been received by Durham F.A. from visiting teams, Ferryhill Town Council have a respon-sibility to the community and need to act in a caring and professional manner. Ferryhill Town Council has not caused this problem; it has been caused by irresponsible dog owners.External funding of £10,000 is being sought to minimise the cost to the Council of fencing off the football pitches. The Town Council is aware that a number of factually incorrect state-ments have been made regarding this initiative. To clarify, the park was dedicated to the people of Ferryhill and that will remain the case. Gates incorporated in the fence design will ensure that pitches remain accessible by people including footballers. People will not be barred from this area.

Dogs will be excluded and an application will be made to Durham County Council for the fenced area to be covered by the recently adopted Public Space Protection Order. It is against the law to allow a dog to foul in a public place and not pick this up and dispose of it in the correct manner. To balance the needs of all users there is a specific dog walking area provided by the Town Council at the bottom of the Storehouse Allotments site that has been provided for the comfort and enjoyment of dogs and their owners. Dogs will also still be permitted, on a lead, in all other areas of Dean Bank Park that are not designated as fenced off play areas. One of the more serious reasons that there are laws in place to safeguard against dog fouling is the risk of Toxocariasis that can lead to blindness. The actions being taken by the inclusion of a fence will ensure a cleaner, greener and safer environment for the playing of sport and recreational activities.

Chairman of Ferryhill Town Council, Councillor John Lindsay.

Dear Editor,

On the evening of 7th July, my family and myself spent a most enjoyable evening at West Cornforth Community Centre. Once more, it was the ‘Big Meeting’ the following day. The Ripon City Band, who led Thrislington Banner into Durham, entertained us in the usual pro-fessional manner.

This year marked the 50th anniversary of the closing of the colliery, so therefore, to ac-knowledge this fact, the evening began on a quiet, sombre note. The audience were asked to stand while the band played the Miners’ Hymn - Gresford.

During this, the names and ages of all the miners who had lost their lives at Thrislington were read out. Eighty two in all - men and boys. A dreadful toll from just one colliery. As you can imagine it was emotional and thought provoking. One name in particular stirred memories for me; Jack Siddle aged 45. I re-membered he was my dad’s ‘marrer’ and my dad was heartbroken, but he still couldn’t miss a shift. An excellent programme of musical talent followed and £600 was raised for next year’s expenses.

At the end of the night, the band received a noisy, standing ovation. The crowd filed out to calls of ‘good night, God bless, see you on the Durham bus bright and early in the morning’. I could have sworn I saw the ghost of the ‘knocker up’ walking up the pit bank.
