As part of the Makers Empire Project, Year Two designed personal totems that related to the Geography unit, “Connection

to Place.” The animals they chose had similar traits to themselves. The students experimented with 3D shapes in the

Makers Empire program and then designed their totem on grid paper. They made their animal face on cardboard, designed

and attached repeated patterns onto cylinders, using an Aboriginal influence to create their totem. They also created an

animal that can be printed on the 3D printer.

TOTEMS

I chose a panther because I like them and my soccer team is the Panthers. I’m the same as a panther, fast and strong. They like to eat meat like me. Christian

I chose a rabbit because a rabbit is always very energetic and I like hopping. A rabbit is not too fast or slow. A rabbit is not that tall and I am not very tall. Haim

I chose a kangaroo because I jump like a kangaroo and they are as fast as me and a bit brown like me. Mason

I chose a rabbit because they are soft and they eat carrots like I do. Paniez

I chose a rabbit because I like carrots and I like hopping. I am sensitive and scared of big animals. Jenna

I chose a rabbit because I like hopping and I like the colour white. Sanvi S

I chose a rabbit because I like to hop, dig dirt up and I also run very fast. I am very good at hopping. Laura

I chose a shark because my favourite element is water. I am always hungry. I also like to be alone sometimes. Jacob

I chose a cockatoo because when I laugh it is as loud as them. I like neon colours just like the ones on a cockatoo. I like to visit new places. Lakshita

I am like a cassowary because I’m strong and cassowaries have to be strong in the wild against predators. I also like the cassowary because you need to be protective with babies. William

I chose a horse because I’m always full of energy and I have long hair. Horses are not too big, but not too small and I’m not too big and not too small. Emma

I chose a lion because they are king of the jungle. Ahmad

I chose a monkey because I am good at moving and sport and monkeys are good at moving and sport. Sometimes I am cheeky and monkeys are cheeky. Hayato

I chose a tiger because they are strong cats and also eat meat. I am strong and like to eat meat. Jonathan

I chose a meerkat because I like it when they run fast. Another fact why I like meerkats is they dig holes fast and make it deep with their hands. Meerkats love sand and I love sand. The last reason is they are really, really cute. Seungyun

I chose an elephant because I am noisy like one. I drink lots of water in a day and I am nice to others. Sanvi R

I chose a tiger because I am fast and I am quiet. Arya I chose a lion because I like meat and lions like meat. I’m strong and lions are strong. I shout sometimes and lions sometime roar. Daniel

I chose a cat because I am like a cat. I run and I am shy. I am happy and I eat and drink. I live my family. Amber

I chose a cat because I love milk and do what I want to do. I curl around my bed when I’m cold. I love to stay a bit quiet when I read at my desk. When I was a baby my eyes were closed like a baby cat. Bianca

Always Wear a Helmet!

Research shows that helmets reduce head injuries by up to 74 per cent in crashes with motor vehi-cles. Wearing a helmet from the moment they start learning to ride will help your child to develop it as a habit and reduce the risk of head injuries.

Early helmet wearers will also be more likely to continue to wear helmets throughout their life.

Your child must wear a helmet when riding a bike in a public place. It is the law. It is important that the helmet is correctly fitted and complies with the Australian and New Zealand Standards. A helmet that is not correctly fitted and fastened does not provide enough protection in a crash.

Choosing and using a helmet Always choose an approved helmet with a standards approved sticker.

Pick a helmet with a bright colour so it can easily be seen. Choose the right size so it doesn’t cover your eyes or ears.

Look for a light weight helmet with adjustable straps and fitting system.

Avoid attaching anything to the helmet.

Never wear a damaged helmet. The Centre for Road Safety website has detailed information on selecting and fitting helmets.

At school, your child will learn about road safety as part of Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Help them learn safety on wheels messages by using and sharing them whenever you are rid-ing together.

Students in Early Stage 1 to Stage 2 Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate

Ride your bike away from the road Students in Stage 3 Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate

Ride your bike away from busy roads
