U12 Netball Carnival

On Friday the 26th August, Tolga State School had a number of girls representing the school in an U12 netball competition organised by the Marlin Coast Netball Region for all Under 12’s in Primary and Secondary schools. Our Tolga team started off very strong winning the first 2 games by a considerable margin. Their 3rd game was very close and they only lost by 1 goal to a team with a number of boys participating. The day continued with 3 more wins and 3 losses. Performances were of a high standard from all Tolga players, and coach Ann Grimshaw was extremely proud of their efforts. As there seems to be a lot of boys competing in netball now, I am hoping to encourage all the 9 and 10 year old boys to participate in netball so we can nominate 2 teams next year in this carnival. Thankyou to the parents who attended and supported their children and especially to Ann Grimshaw for Coaching and Meagan Baker for managing the team.

Writers’ and Illustrators’ Camp 2016 Daradgee Environmental Centre Six lucky students from Tolga State School participated in the Writers and Illustrators Camp this term, these were Erin

Cauchi, Nikita Copine, Ella Kelly, David Kilpatrick, Robbie Masasso and Olivia O’Connor.

“What colour wash do you use on your end paper?”

“How do your texts and pictures work together to weave your story?”

These are some of the questions award winning author and illustrators’ Elizabeth Honey and Craig Smith asked

students this term at the Writers’ and Illustrators Camp at Daradgee Environmental Centre. Students wrote,

illustrated and published their own picture books based on Australian farm life. Over the four days students had

opportunities to story conference with Elisabeth Honey; strengthen links between pictures and text with Craig Smith;

or watch how Elisabeth and Craig draw over watercolour washes to build a scene. Sixty four students from eighteen

schools participated along with teachers and parent helpers. The creative banter between Elizabeth and Craig was

infectious and encouraged students to take risks, developing their skills beyond where they thought possible.

Students were involved in the whole process of creating a book, from developing the plot, using a story board,

creating watercolour book covers and illustrations and then binding their books with leather.

Some student highlights were:

“I really liked planning how the illustrations were set out on a page to best interact with the words.”

“I liked the food”

“I enjoyed watching how Craig and Elizabeth could turn something that didn’t look like anything into an amazing

picture.”

“In one minute they turned a scribble into an expression on a face.”

“I enjoyed getting to know Liz and Craig and seeing that they are just normal people who have achieved highly, it

shows you that you can do something like that too.”
