Dear Parents &

Caregivers

School Assembly –

Every Monday on assembly we celebrate

achievements and share highlights through

student awards, class items and sharing

special events we have enjoyed, such as our

new Connect Program years 4 – 6.

It is always wonderful to see parents,

grandparents and other family members

come along to assembly and be part of our

celebration. Years 4 – 6 have assembly at

9:00am on Monday morning and Prep –

Year 3 at 2:15pm on Monday afternoon.

Class visits –

Last week I visited Years 4C, 3A and 2/3F.

Year 4C were engaged in Reader’s Theatre,

and Year 3A and Year 2/3F were

demonstrating their skills in mathematics.

While Year 2/3F were mastering division,

Year 3A were very eager to show the many

ways they worked with place value.

This week I will be visiting Years 4B, 4D and

6C.

The Power of Words –

We are focusing on the words we choose

and how those words have an enormous

effect on all of us. Teachers to students,

students to students, parents to teachers.

“Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.”

In the coming weeks and throughout the

year I will be acknowledging students and

others in our school community who have

used words to encourage others, be

supportive, show kindness or demonstrate

what it means to show consideration and

care for others. We have so many great

examples to share.

Have a wonderful fortnight everyone,

Theresa Sheehan

2C shared their knowledge of the seven continents with us all at assembly on Monday. They did an excellent

job! Thank you 2C and Miss Horwood!

Raceview Reading

Improving reading is our main focus at Raceview State School. Even good readers continue to

learn how to decipher new words and their meanings, as well as increasing their knowledge of

specific words that relate to particular topics. Comprehension is a major part of reading and

is a life-long learning process.

All students have had their reading goals set for the term. Their card may look something like

the one on the right. These cards remain in the students’ reading folders for access during

every reading session.

Please ask your child what their reading goal is and how they are using it every day when

reading. If they can’t answer you, have them check the next day and let them know that you are going to ask them that night.

SPORTy Behaviour

Please remember to discuss our SPORTy expectations for behaviour with your child/

ren. With the hot weather, sometimes children find it very difficult to persist with

work and remain calm and tolerant of others. We want everyone to feel safe and

supported at Raceview State School.

Term 1 Disco

Due to the school photographs being taken on March 28 and 29, we have had to reschedule the

disco date. The new Term 1 disco date is Thursday 4 April.

This year we are trialling the music being done by staff which means that there will not be a cost

for the DJ. This in turn will reduce the disco entry cost. The Term 1 disco entry will be $3 per

student.

More information regarding times and food available will be sent out via email, Facebook and Newsletter, closer to the

date.

Student Leaders

The student leaders were recently inducted and have now all received their

badges. I am happy to report that the student leaders are very keen to get

involved and start working towards new initiatives for our school.

Recently the 2019 leaders attended a leadership conference for primary

students. They came back very enthusiastic and full of new ideas.

Congratulations to our new 2019 leaders.

Year 5A Visit

I recently had the pleasure of sitting in 5A and watching a

lesson on sentences. Students were identifying full

sentences and fragments of sentences.

It was a very engaging lesson and it was great to see the full

participation from the students.

Bullying – NO WAY!

The Queensland Government has developed a document titled “Working

Together. A toolkit for parents to address bullying.” It’s quite a good read and

includes strategies and ways that parents can work with the school if their child is

being bullied. Raceview State School does not tolerate bullying, however, it is

important to understand what bullying actually is. In consultation with staff and

students and the SWPBS Committee, we defined bullying as-

Bullying is the repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behaviour that is

harmful towards others. It can be perpetrated by an individual or a group and can

target one or more persons.

Page 4: SCHOOL · 3/11/2019  · SENIOR CHOIR - Rehearsals every Tuesday 2nd break. First performance at School Anzac Service Term 2 Week 1. Sign up still available for new members. Students

RACEVIEW STATE SCHOOL — Page 4

There are 5 types of bullying – physical, verbal, social, psychological and cyber. While it’s important to understand and

define what bullying is, it’s also important to be clear on which behaviours are NOT bullying.

For some people, ‘bullying’ is a highly emotive term and its use may lead to a strong reaction. The National Centre

Against Bullying acknowledges that while the following behaviours are often upsetting to those involved, they do not

constitute bullying.

Social bantering with minor insults and jokes;

Mutual arguments and disagreements;

Not liking someone or a single act of social rejection;

One-off acts of meanness or spite; and

Isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

While these behaviours would not be considered bullying, because they do not involve deliberate and repeated harm

and a power imbalance, they need to be addressed in the same way as other inappropriate student behaviours.

If parents are concerned about these behaviours, they should contact their child’s teacher or a member of the school

administration team.

At assembly this week, students were once again reminded to report to the staff member on duty if they were having

any problems in the playground. As part of our High 5 lessons, students have been taught that one of the strategies is

to ‘Report’ the incident to a staff member. While it’s also good to tell an adult at home, it’s more important to tell an

adult at school at the time the incident happened.

Our SWPBS Focus the next 2 weeks is about Bullying and how to deal with it. We

encourage all students to wear an orange shirt this Friday to show support for the

‘Bullying—NO WAY’ campaign.

Students have been given a’ Bullying—NO WAY’ armband to wear.

EcoMarine Tangalooma Ambassadors

Congratulations to our newly appointed EcoMarine Ambassadors.

The students were presented with their shirts at assembly last week

and are all very keen to get started in their roles.

ANZAC Day

On Wednesday the 24th of April, the School will be holding its

ANZAC Day Assembly in the School Hall.

We would appreciate everyone being seated by 2:00pm.

The school would like to invite all Defence Members and their families to attend

and join us for an afternoon tea following the assembly.

As part of our assembly, there will be a slideshow including photos of family

members of staff and students who have served.

(Please email me a photo if you would like one included.)

Communication

Please advise me, via email, if there will be a parental absence due to deployment, ADF training and or operational

readiness, so that extra support can be provided to your child/ren.

FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS

Ilona Young

Friday, March 15th is a National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. We will start our discussions in our

classrooms this week and they will go for the next two weeks. We will be discussing: What does Bullying Mean?

What is a Bystander? and what actions we can all take to help stop bullying.

In Prep it is advised not to use the words Bully and Bullying but to focus on kindness

and practising those important social skills. The Program they use to learn about this is

“The Allen Adventure.”

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/ForKids/Pages/Kids-under-8.aspx

Raceview State School’s definition of bullying:

“Bullying is repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that is harmful towards

others. It can be carried out by an individual or a group who are perceived to have more

power over one or more persons.”

This is the definition we use at our school.

If you are aware of this definition it will be easier for you to talk to your children

about bullying and make sure that we are all using the same language.

Please find a set of videos that are very helpful for parents to be able to understand

the definition of bullying. Video one explains the definition and the other 3 videos go

into the definition in more detail. https://raceviewss.eq.edu.au/Supportandresources/

CREATIVE GENERATIONS 2019 - Raceview is hosting West Cell Massed Choir Rehearsals

March 25th & 26th. This is great exposure for our school. See Mrs Salemanesa if you would like to

know how to be a part of this fabulous musical extravaganza.

QSO CONCERT SOUTHBANK - Junior Strings and Band students attended a concert held at

the Queensland Symphony Orchestra Studios on Wednesday 6 March. Our students loved the live

concert and story experience. Many students left the concert saying they understand how practising

regularly makes you a better musician/performer.

CLASSROOM MUSIC - Over the last few weeks, all senior classes learned Solfege through songs

and games to develop their music literacy skills, enabling them to read and write music at their

expected year level. Whilst classes study selected music units for the remainder of term, students

are also learning a song with AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) to celebrate upcoming Harmony

Day in mid March.

SENIOR BAND - Rehearsals 7.45am-8.45am Wednesdays. Next performance is at our

school’s Anzac Service on Wednesday 24 April.

POLYNESIAN DANCE - Rehearsals Monday 2nd break. Stay tuned for upcoming assembly

performances.

INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM - Reminder to families to pay their $10 music levy as soon as

possible. Any queries please email Mrs Salemanesa on [email protected]

FERGAL ONIONS -

On Wednesday March 6, a group of 51 students from the Strings and Instrumental Program

travelled to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra headquarters at South Bank to hear the world

premiere performance of Fergal Onions.

This is a narrated story written by local writer John Harrison. The music was composed by QSO

Percussionist David Montgomery and performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in their

studio at South Bank. For many children this was the first time that they had heard or seen an

Orchestra perform live.

LIBRARY

NEWS

During the performance the children were introduced to the

different families of instruments and were able to hear the

instrument that they are currently learning played by a

professional musician.

After the performance some of the comments from the

children were “That was the best music I have ever heard!”,

“I would like to hear that again!” and “I really enjoyed that!”

A big thankyou to Mrs Malpass who helped with the

supervision of the children on the day. All of the children

used their best Raceview Sporty manners and we look

forward to our next musical adventure together.

Why Music?

Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and to take risks.

A little anxiety is a good thing, and something that will occur often in life.

Dealing with it early and often makes it less of a problem later.

Risk-taking is essential if a child is to fully develop his or her potential.

will occur in Week 10. The dates for each carnival are as

follows:

11, 12 & 13 Years – Monday 1 April 2019

9 & 10 Years – Tuesday 2 April 2019

Year 1, 2 and 3 Swimming Fun Day – Term 4

Programs will be available to buy on the morning of each day

There will be a BBQ available for all

parents, family members, students and

staff to purchase at morning tea on

each of the days.

We are also looking for parent volunteers from our current

student leaders to help with cooking and service.

If you are able to assist, please contact me at the

school as soon as possible.

I am also seeking parent help during the 11 & 12 Years

carnival. If you are able to volunteer some time, please let

me know.

Can I please ask that all students attending these carnivals

have a hat (named), water bottle and all swimming equipment

required.

Please make sure that uniforms are named as we have had a

lot of lost property in the past following these events.

I am looking forward to seeing you all

in attendance to support our students

as they swim for house points or

championship glory.

There should be some great days

enjoyed by all.

INTERSCHOOL SPORT WINTER SEASON

The Winter and Summer Interschool Sport season (For

Years 5 & 6) has changed significantly this year due to the

representative sports calendar during Term 1 and 2 being

over-crowded.

This year, the Winter season begins in

Week 1 of Term 3. Students will participate

in Rugby League, Soccer, Netball and Hockey

and it would be great to see parents and

family members coming along to support our

teams on a Friday afternoon.

The season will run for 9 weeks and games will be played

from 12:45pm – 2:30pm.

The Summer season will be held over 3 weeks in Term 4

and students will compete in numerous games each week

from 9am – 2:30pm. The Summer season includes AFL,

Softball, Basketball, Touch Football and Cricket.

Students will nominate for their chosen sports this Friday

afternoon and then will participate in selection trials in the

coming weeks before permission notes are sent home to

students selected in the various teams.

These will need to be returned to the team coach by the due

date.

If students are selected in a squad, they are committed to

participating in training and games for the entire season. This

is outlined in the permission notes and in the Student Code

of Conduct.

Good luck to all teams.

WESTERN RANGES DISTRICT SCHOOL SPORT

Just a reminder to students and family members that the

process for District Representative Sports trials has changed

significantly over the past two years.

In most sports, students will trial for a position in our Zone

team (Ipswich South) before heading in to trial for the

Western District team. This is due to the large number of

schools within our current district.

Students that wish to trial for these teams will first need to

nominate their intention to me and I will hold a short trial at

school to determine that they are at the standard required

for these District trials.

I need everyone to be aware that this pathway is for

REPRESENTATIVE standard students and is not a “come

and try” event.

On the following page will be the WRDSS—

P & C NEWS

The P&C is a parent

representative body, which

stands for Parents & Citizens

Association. The P&C is the

voice of the parents. It is at

P&C meetings that decisions

affecting your child at school

are made.

Being a part of the P&C is a great way for parents to be

informed of what is happening at the school, influence school

policy, have a say in the development of school activities,

contribute to the school’s resources through various

fundraising projects, and a chance to meet other parents.

The Raceview State School P&C meets on the 3rd

Monday of every month at 6.30pm, unless advised

otherwise. The next meeting will be our AGM held on

Monday 18th March 2019 in the staffroom. We would love

to see you there!

Our current fundraiser is our Easter Raffle, where we have some fantastic prizes on offer.

Tickets have already been sent home so please remember to return all tickets to the Tuckshop.

Don’t forget to come along to our next P&C meeting

which is our AGM on Monday 18th March. We would love to see more families attending.

If you have an accounting background we are also

looking for someone to assist the Treasurer this year. I look forward to seeing you there.

Kind regards,

Adam Price P & C PRESIDENT

SCHOOL BANKING

NEWS

School Banking at Raceview State School is on

EVERY TUESDAY

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young

Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits.

Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through

School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and

redeem for exciting rewards.

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school.

Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever

School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the

school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a

Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an

account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online

Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

CTRL+ Click on the link above to be directed to the information /

application page. Find “ OPEN NOW” to open a Youthsaver

account, even if you are not a CBA customer ( Takes approx. 5

minutes with online ID available )

2. In branch

Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself

and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver

account they can start banking straight away. They just need to

bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their

Dollarmites deposit wallet.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask

for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the

school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
