JOSE ENTERS THE ATENEO


• June 10, 1872 – Jose, accompanied byPaciano, went to Manila

– He took the entranceexaminations on Christian doctrine, arithmetic, and reading at the College of San Juan de Letran.


• Father Magin Ferrando – college reigstra at Ateneo Municipal– refused to admit Jose for two reasons:1. He was late for registration2. He was sickly and undersized for his

age•Manuel Xeres Burgos – Nephew of Father Burgos– Upon the intercession with him, Jose was reluctantly admitted at the Ateneo


•“Mercado”– had come under the suspicion of the Spanish authorities.– Paciano had used “Mercado” as his surname at the College of San Jose and he was known as authorities as Father Burgos’ favorite student and confidant.


• Intramuros – where Ateneo is located

•Carballo street – where Jose’s boarding house is

located– the boarding house was owned

by a spinster named Titay who owned the Rizal family the amount of P300

JESUIT SYSTEM OF EDUCATION


• The system of education given by the Jesuits in the Ateneo was more advanced than that of colleges in that period. • It trained the character of the student by rigid discipline and religious instruction.•Mass in the morning before the beginning of daily classes


• Classes in every subject were opened and closed with prayers• Students were divided into groups namely:* “Roman Empire”

– consisting of the internos (boarders)* “Carthaginian Empire”

– composed of the externos(non-boarders)

SUMMER VACATION1873

SUMMER VACATION

•Rizal returned to calamba again fro summer vacation but he did not particularly enjoy his vacation because his mother was in prison.

SECOND YEAR IN ATENEO

• Nothing unusual happened to rizal during this semester except that he repented having neglected his studies the previous year simply because he was offended by the teachers remarks.


His Favorite Books:

1. ‘Count of Monte Cristo’ (Alexander Dumas) – characterized by Edmond Dantes (the hero) in prison, is spectacular escape from the dungeon of Chateau d’ If, the finding of buried treasure on the rocky island of Monte Cristo, and his dramatic revenge on his enemies who had wronged him;


His Favorite Books:

2. ‘Travels in the Philippines’ (Dr. Feodor Jagor) – a German scientist-traveler who visited the Philippines in 1859-1860. What struck him most in this book were Jagor’s keen oberservations of the defects of Spanish colonization and his prophecy that someday Spain would lose the Philippines and that America would come to succeed her as colonizer;

3. ‘Universal History’ (Cesar Cantu) – a non-fiction historical work. He was able to acquire an expensive set of this book by convincing his father that this book would be of great aid in his studies and enabled him to win more pr
