RNPW President

In our business and personal lives, we sometimes need to have, and may even avoid, tough conversations. My husband and I own a construction company that does remodeling and additions. Sometimes these ‘opportunities’ occur with subcontractors, suppliers or our customers. It really isn’t like HGTV when a big surprise, or several, occurs in every renovation! However, no matter how hard you look, study the structure and collaborate with the subcontractors, it often is not until you open up the walls that you see what really is in there – electrical that’s not up to code; a load supporting beam that was notched out to make room for plumbing; and/or something in the wall that gave no indications it was there. Then it is our job to talk to the homeowner and explain why a certain job needs to be done differently; is more extensive than anticipated; and sometimes more expensive – the hardest part.

Last year, Rockford Network hosted our First Annual Professional Skills Development Training! We had 60+ people enjoy breakfast and learn techniques in “The Art of High Impact Communication” including “The Art of the Pitch” and “The Art of Negotiation.” Evaluations were wonderful and Rockford Network’s ‘Second” Annual Professional Skills Development Training was put on the agenda for 2015.

After several years of discussing this idea, we: focused the project; decided to enrich and educate not only our members but also our community (it is open to everyone); knew it would increase the visibility of Rockford Network; and most importantly, determined all profits would help fill our scholarship account. This year the committee is soliciting sponsors–even a special offer for members only–to increase the profit for scholarship! ServPro of Rockford is honored with Chamber’s Small Business of the Year Award

RNPW member Mary Jo Hare, Jocelyn Hare, Kay King and the entire ServPro of Rockford staff were honored last week as the Rockford Chamber’s Small Business of the Year honoree. Following is some info from their nomination:

“Charlie and Mary Jo Hare became the owners of ServPro of Rockford in 2005. Since then, the business has developed from a literal “Mom and Pop” company, where they wore all hats, to an involved business with fully managed departments. There are 12 full-time employees within the Sales, Administrative, Restoration/Remediation and Subcontracting/Reconstruction departments, with processes in place for continued growth and expansion.

Over the last 10 years, ServPro of Rockford has experienced consistent financial growth. This includes the averaging of 10-15% increases yearly even through the recession. In 2014, ServPro of Rockford reached its all-time high and saw extraordinary financial gains of 64%.

ServPro of Rockford is ahead of the competitors with introductions of new restoration cleaning products. This includes a full line of “Green”/Eco-Friendly products that are created and manufactured by ServPro Industries, Inc. They utilize the use of current science and technology to reduce the time and materials of each loss. This includes the consistent use of in-place and top-down drying techniques, which allows for cost-savings on behalf of all parties (i.e. Insurance companies, home-owners, Property Managers, etc). ServPro of Rockford has an inside “engineer” and tool inventor who develops new tools specifically for the restoration industry. At this time, there are patents pending and ServPro of Rockford is the only restoration company with these enhanced designs.

Community Involvement is one of the most intrinsic values for ServPro of Rockford. ServPro is very involved with the Rockford Chamber and you can find a company representative at almost every Chamber event. In addition, ServPro has provided pro-bono services to many local organizations. For example, employees donate their time to clean carpets for the Children’s Home & Aid Christmas Shop and for the Music Academy of Rockford. ServPro of Rockford and its employees are also involved in the following:

• MusicAcademyofRockford;Boardmember• AlpineKiwanis,communityservicesco-chair• HeritageKiwanis• RockfordRotary-MemberofBoardofDirectors• GirlScoutsofNorthernIllinois,troopcamptrainerand cookie chair• FamilyCounselingServices;BoardMember&Fundraising Committee members• Rosie’sBirthdayClub;FundraisingChair,Birthday Party Volunteer

Scholarship Committee Needed: I am blessed this year to have been given the opportunity to give away not one, but two $2000 scholarships to local high schools. I am looking for a group of individuals to form my scholarship committee to help me choose the criteria for the students, and also ultimately choose the recipient of the award. Please let me know if you’d be interested. It is very minimal time, as we will probably only meet twice briefly throughout the process, but a great way to meet new people.
