The UWA Fogarty FoundationScholarship Program

The UWA Fogarty Scholarship Program aims to strengthen our community by investing in exceptional young people who use their skills and commitment to lead positive change in our community, state and nation.

Established in 2004, the UWA Forgarty Scholarship Program is one of Australia’s premier scholarship programs. The scholarship is a joint initiative between the Fogarty Foundation and The University of Western Australia, to award WA’s brightest and most committed students’ scholarships for the entirety of their university degree.

The program connects scholars with local and international leaders, to provide Scholars and Alumni leadership opportunities, supported through comprehensive academic scholarships, academic mentoring, career and personal enrichment engagements and paramount to the program is a strong network of likeminded young leaders.

10 new scholarships are awarded each year to students who study across a range of disciplines. UWA Fogarty Undergraduate Scholars who choose to continue their postgraduate study at UWA are also supported in their further studies.

The scholarships inclulde a tailored leadership program for the Scholar’s entire university degree that focuses on developing transformative leadership skills in each of the Scholars. The leadership program is a key element of the scholarships, where Scholars learn from, and have access to, a network of leaders, gain some insight into how our community works and hopefully the awareness of how they can make a contribution now and in the future.

In 2020 we have 60 Scholars and 96 Alumni who are studying, working and making a contribution in WA and around the world.

Undergraduate course of study: Bachelor of Science

Jonathan Kammann

Current Course of Study: Masters of Agriculture

Undergraduate Course of Study: Bachelor of Science

After completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in genetics in 2017, Michael is now in his second year of the UWA postgraduate Doctor of Medicine course.

Seeking to continue making music as his studies intensified, Michael founded Here To Help - Perth’s Charity Band in 2019. This has allowed him to balance his time studying text books with regular performances at local not-for-profit events and hospitals.

Jonathon grew up on the family farm near Manjimup and finished year 12 in 2014 at Manjimup Senior High School, after spending the year as Head Boy. With strong interests in all things outdoors undertaking a Bachelor of Philosophy with a double major in Geology and Botany seemed ideal. Geology seems to like him as much as he likes it, resulting in the Westernex field geology award for the best second year field geologist and the opportunity to represent UWA at the 2016 ANZIC IODP Masterclass in New Zealand (a masterclass with a particular focus on marine geology and coring). Despite this, the zeal for dinosaurs which drove him into Geology has been waning over the past few semesters, and a change in direction may be on the horizon.

When not at St Catherine’s College (who are kind enough to keep him while he’s in Perth), Jonathon can be found chasing a football for his beloved Australian Football club, the Manjimup Imperials, fishing remote beaches with his younger brother or scampering over mountain tops with high school aged kids.

Fogarty Scholars’ Association

The Fogarty Scholars’ Association (FSA) comprises all UWA Fogarty Scholars and Alumni. The FSA facilitates the cohesion and skills development of the UWA Fogarty Scholars and Alumni, in order to empower them to contribute to society.

The FSA has three key objectives:

The Fogarty Foundation

The Fogarty Foundation advances social change through education.

The Foundation was founded in 2000 by Brett and Annie Fogarty to support and provide education and leadership opportunities across the spectrum of the WA community.

The Foundation identifies areas of need and supports and develops West Australian programs that deliver educational opportunities and have wide, long-term impact.

The Foundation’s current programs fall within 3 main focus areas:

• Next Generation Leaders: Empowering, extending and creating opportunities for high performing and high potential students

• Excellent Teaching for all: Inspiring excellence and high quality instruction in schools by investing in teachers, school leaders and school principals to ensure that all students receive a high quality education

• Future Ready Students: Catalysing innovation in education to ensure that today’s

students are equipped with skills for the future

The ripple effect, depicted in the Foundation’s logo, is at the very essence of everything that the Foundation does, creating opportunities for improved outcomes with long term impact.

Through education, the Fogarty Foundation is building stronger communities inWestern Australia.
