Edited by Joonas Ahola, Frog & Jenni LuceniusThe Viking Age in ÅlandInsights into Identity and Remnants of Culture

The Viking Age in Åland presents a mystery. Who were these people who lived there and developed the culture and language of the area? It is difficult even to define exactly when the Viking Age occurred in Åland. The period is generally considered having started in the ninth and tenth centuries AD and ended in the eleventh century. The book shows earlier interpretations, presents current views and offers exploratory investigations that will interest both specialists and devotees.

Tauno Saarela Finnish communism visited

Finnish communism was one of the largest communist movements in Europe. It was deeply rooted in Finnish society and the traditions of the Finnish labour movement, but it also had strong ties with Soviets. In 1918–1944 the movement was active in Finland as well as in the Soviet Union. The articles of this book discuss the contacts between the Communist International and Finnish communism, the relations between Finnish and Scandinavian communists, and the American impact on Finnish communism.

Joonas KorhonenSocial Choreography of the Viennese WaltzThe Transfer and Reception of the Dance in Vienna and Europe, 1780–1825

This book focuses on the sociocultural and economic circumstances in which the Viennese waltz developed at the turn of the 19th century. Through an examination of the production, dissemination and consumption of the waltz in Vienna and Europe during the period of 1780–1825, the book shows that the Viennese waltz became one of the first commodities of the culture industry. It was first adopted by the elite, but soon it was taught to the lower classes in the suburban dance schools and dance halls.

Vesa VahtikariTragedy Performances outside Athens in the Late Fifth and the Fourth Centuries BC

At the end of the fifth century and during the fourth century BC, both tragedies and comedies were performed in the demes of Attica at the Rural Dionysia. During that time theatres were built in all major Greek cities. This study answers the questions of which individual tragedies were performed outside Athens, when the spread of tragic performances began on a wide scale, in which cities and on what kind of occasions tragedies were performed, and how were the arrangements for the tragic performances carried out in practice?

Eerika Koskinen-Koivisto Her Own WorthNegotiations of Subjectivity in the Life Narrative of a Female Labourer

This book opens up a window in the life of a female labourer who lived and worked in a small ironworks village in central Finland. Her life touches upon many of the core aspects of 20thcentury social change in Finland: increasing educational opportunities, social mobility, the emergence of new technologies and the transformation of gender roles. The research focuses on experiences related to gender, class and work, and on the changes occurring in these aspects of life.

In the 1840s, the Finnish Orientalist Georg August Wallin travelled in the Middle East where he collected material on Arabic dialects. In order to make contact with the local inhabitants he assumed a Muslim identity and disguised himself as the physician ‘Abd alWali from Central Asia. His unique material is preserved in diaries and letters. Wallin’s life and travels in Egypt, the Arabian Peninsula and Persia are described here by four scholars of Middle Eastern culture and history.

Riika J. VirtanenTibetan Written Images A Study of Imagery in the Writings of Dhondup Gyal

Tibetan writer Dhondup Gyal (1953–1985) is regarded as the founder of modern Tibetan literature. There is a real wealth of imagery both in his poems and prose. Nature imagery is especially prominent. His writings contain images of flowers, animals, water, wind and clouds, the heavenly bodies and other environmental elements. A special feature of Gyal’s style of writing is that he wrote using many styles: part of his poetry uses more traditional structural and metric forms and part of it is written in modern free verse.

Edited by Olli Matikainen & Satu LidmanMorality, Crime and Social Control in Europe 1500–1900

This book explores key themes in European history through case studies about the muchdebated concept of “social control” from its exercise within the family and local communities to interventions at the highest state level. A wide range of regulated practices and institutions can be treated as manifestations of social control. Their common feature is the way they develop a set of practices and rituals.

Antti LaineEcumenical Attack against Racism The Anti-Racist Programme of the World Council of Churches, 1968–1974

The social and political changes of the 1960 set a test for the World Council of Churches (WCC), the foremost organization of the modern ecumenical movement. This study concentrates on the WCC’s answer to the worldwide call for social justice: the Programme to Combat Racism (PCR). The PCR marked a turning point in the history of the WCC. It signalled a clear change from the WCC’s prior tendency of issuing the general statements of agreement to engaging in controversial action.

Edited by Mika S. Pajunen & Hanna TervanotkoCrossing Imaginary BoundariesThe Dead Sea Scrolls in the Context of Second Temple Judaism

Crossing Imaginary Boundaries challenges the reader to rethink critically the categories and interdisciplinary borders that are currently used in the study of ancient Jewish texts. The book demonstrates the importance of crossing the boundaries between disciplines to get a fuller understanding of these texts.

Soili NokkonenChanges in the field of obligation and necessity in contemporary British EnglishA corpus-based sociolinguistic study of semi-modal NEED TO

This book investigates semimodal NEED TO and its semantic variation in Presentday British English. This topic is particularly relevant today, since the use of semimodals, such as NEED TO, has increased in the field of obligation and necessity, while the frequencies of core modals such as MUST and NEED have decreased. The link of modal change with the process of democratization, and the way the semimodals offer a less authoritarian way of obliging, present an interesting background for a corpusbased sociolinguistic study.

Tanja Säily Sociolinguistic variation in English derivational productivity Studies and methods in diachronic corpus linguistics

The research presented in this book explores sociolinguistic variation and change in the morphological productivity of the nominal suffixes –ness and –ity from Early Modern English to Presentday English. To do this, it employs robust methods to compare item frequencies over time and across social categories. In addition to research into individual linguistic features, the methods can be used to compare corpora and study genre continuity.

Anne-Christine Gardner Derivation in Middle EnglishRegional and Text Type Variation

Focusing on deadjectival and denominal formations, this study traces developments in the frequency and productivity of twelve abstractnoun forming suffixes of Germanic and Romance origin on the basis of selected corpora. The study reveals that during the period under investigation the suffixes are not differentiated semantically in a systematic manner. The occurrence of a particular suffix can be influenced by stylistic factors such as rhyme. A specific region and text type also reflects the suffix usage.

Kari AleniusUnselfishly for Peace and Justice – and against EvilThe Rhetoric of the Great Powers in the UN Security Council, 1946–1956

The United Nations Security Council represented the most central forum for debating international crises after the Second World War. This study examines the rhetoric used by the great powers in the United Nations Security Council, in the context of the international crises that occurred between 1946 and 1956. The arguments of the great powers represent integral parts of those powers’ political agendas. To them the Security Council served as a public forum where they might justify their political positions.

Edited by Eldar Heide & Karen Bek-PedersenNew Focus on Retrospective MethodsResuming methodological discussions: case studies from Northern Europe

The articles in this volume concern the questions of whether, how, and to what extent laterecorded material can be used to shed light on historically much earlier periods. It is a fact that our sources for the study of preChristian times in Northern Europe are limited. It is possible to get new and relevant information if we broaden our spectrum of sources to include not only contemporary or nearcomtemporary material, but also material from subsequent, even much later, periods.

Edited by Maria Lähteenmäki & Alfred ColpaertNGP Yearbook 2014 East meets North

This special volume of NGP Yearbook contains papers derived from the East meets North conference arranged at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) in November 2013. From the discussions in the conference we can identify four strong areas of research connected with the northern and eastern borderlands: 1) crossborder historical, cultural and economic contacts, 2) welfare, 3) the people of the North and their rights, and 4) crises occurring in northern regions and their consequences. This book provides examples of these points.
