Scholar’s Mate 100 7

It's easy. The board has 8 filesand 8 ranks. Files are the rowsof squares that go up and down. Each one is named by a smallletter. Ranks are rows that gosideways. Each one is namedby a number.Every square also has a name.

The first part is its file and thesecond part is its rank. In thisdiagram, a white pawn movedto e4 and a black pawn to e5.

When moves are written down, the first capital letter shows thepiece which moves. Q is queen.B is bishop. R is rook. N is usedfor knight because the king is K.If there is no capital letter, thatmeans a pawn moves.

Next is the square that thepiece moves to. Bc4 says that abishop moves to the square c4.When a piece is captured, an xis put before the square. Qxf7means a queen takes on f7.

If a pawn captures, the letterof the file it starts on is givenfirst, then an x followed by thesquare it takes on. exd5 says apawn on the e-file captures onthe square d5.

When two pieces of the samekind can go to the same spot, another letter is put after thepiece to show what file it camefrom. Rae1 tells us that a rookon the a-file moves to e1.

If the pieces that can move tothe same spot are on the samefile, then their rank number isadded. N6e4 means the knighton the 6th rank moves to e4.

Answers to Kiril’s Kontest (#99) . . .Note: In Triple Loyd A. Kd5, the position is impossible inreal chess. The bishop at a8 should be at b7.

Yinshi Li North York, ON

Hi Yinshi,Thanks for entering my contest. Your answers were

all correct, but I’m sorry to say that somebody elsewon the drawing for the t-shirt. Maybe you will winnext time! My new contest is on page 33.

In triple loyd part A (see the diagram), the positioncould happen in a real game. When you’re a pawn likeme, you always think about a promotion!

Sometimes there is no way out for a wandering knight.

CCOORRRRAALLLLIINNGGKNNIIGHTSS

German grandmaster SiegbertTarrasch is famous for manychess sayings. One of the bestknown says that: “A knight onthe rim is dim.”

The rim means the side of theboard and knights have lessfreedom to move there. Thatcan often lead to trouble, as inposition # 1. The knight has nosafe squares to run to and getstrapped by 1.b4!

Because of their impressivejumping powers, knights are notso easy to catch in the middleof the board. But it can happen.Example #2 is from the SteinitzVariation of the French Defence:1.e4 e6 2.d4 e5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5Ne4? (4...Nfd7!) 5.Nce2. Blackmust be very careful here. The standard move 5...c5?would lose to 6.f3! Ng5 7.h4, trapping the helpless knight.(Also bad is 5...h6? 6.h4! The best defence is 5...f6though white still stands better after 6.Nf4! )

Diagram #3 shows how a knightcan get caught behind enemypawns. Black decides to capturethe white a-pawn with 1...Nb4?!2.Kd2 Nxa2? but soon discoversthat the knight has no escaperoute. White replies 3.c3! andthen brings the king over to takethe knight. (3...b5 4.Kc2 b4 5.c4a5 6.Kb3 c6 7.Kxa2 1-0)

Knights frequently get trappedin corners. This is where theirmobility is smallest. In #4, thewhite king helps to keep theknight boxed in. After 1.Kd2!white captures with the rook.

#5 is a typical case where aplayer wins the exchange (R forB or N) but gets a knight stuckin the corner. The opening wasa Nimzovich Defence: 1.e4 Nc62.d4 d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 4.Nf3 Bg4(A better move is 4...e5!) 5.Nc3Bxf3 6.Nxd5 Bxd1 7.Nxc7+ Kd8 8.Nxa8 Bxc2 9.d5 Nd4.Black will have two pieces for a rook now if the knightcan be captured. A sample line is 10.Bf4 e5! 11.dxe6 e.p.(11.Bxe5? Bb4#) Bb4+ 12.Bd2 Bxd2+ 13.Kxd2 Bg6!14.exf7 Bxf7 15.Rc1 Nc6 16.Bb5 Nge7 17.a3 Kd7 18.Rhd1Rxa8 and black has a material edge.

The king traps the knight byhimself in example #6. 1.Kg7!(1...Kb3 2.Kxh8 Kc4 3.h4 Kd54.h5 Ke6 5.Kg7 and the h-pawnpromotes.)

In position #7, the white queentakes care of business on herown with 1.Qd5. And the knightis lost.

The ending in diagram #8 ismore complicated. White givesup the f-pawn to trap the knightwith the bishop. 1.f7! Kg7 2.Be7Kxf7 3.Bb4! The white king nowmarches over to do the dirtywork. 3...Kf6 4.Kf2 Kf5 5.Ke3 e56.Kd3 e4+ 7.Kc2 Kf4 8.Kxb1 Kf39.Kc2 e3 10.Kd1 Kf2 11.Bc5! 1-0

Arabian master Al-Aldi usedexample #9 over 1100 years ago!Black could draw if the king andknight where not so awkwardlyplaced near the corner. Whitewins by 1.Rd1! Kb8 2.Ka6! Nc5+3.Kb6 Na4+ 4.Kc6 Nc3 5.Re1Ka7 6.Re3 Nb1 7.Rd3! The blackknight is corralled. One way forwhite to win now is to bring theking back and capture the knighton b1. See page 50 for moreanalysis.

Let’s finish off this lesson witha fun problem where the knightscorral a king. Notice the fancyhoofwork near the corners! It’swhite to move in diagram #10and mate in 7 moves. solution page 50

DDIIDD YYOOUUKKNNOOWW ??

Stalemate has not alwaysbeen a draw. When chess wasinvented in India 1500 yearsago, a stalemate counted as awin. But after the game cameto Europe in the 14th century, the rule changed.

Everyone agreed that a stalemate should not bea victory, but they could not agree what the newrule should be! For several hundred years, variouscountries had different stalemate rules.

In Spain, during the 1700’s, a stalemate countedas a half victory (½ for the winner, 0 for the loser).

In France, a player in stalemate forfeited theirturn, and the opponent got two moves in a row.

The rule in England until 1808 was totally weird:the player who got stalemated won the game!

Italy decided that a stalemate should be a draw, and eventually it was their rule that was acceptedby the entire world.

Can you imagine the effect on basic endgames ifa stalemate still counted as a win!?

A STALEMATE is one particular kind of draw. It happens when aplayer has no legal moves and is not in check. Other types of draw are repeating the same position three times,

playing 50 moves without a capture or pawn move, not havingenough material for mate, or simply agreeing to a draw. Thesedraws should not be called “stalemate”.

The mystery continues . . . on a cold and grey Canadianmorning. As the snow flies, a police van arrives outsidethe prison walls. The gate opens, and the guards leadKiril in.

The cold wind was there to greet him. It blew thecap right off his head. When Kiril tried to catch it, hetripped over his chains and bumped his runny nose onthe frozen ground. Ow!

Kiril looked up and saw someonevery big looking down at him. It wasJumbo Pawn, the prison guard.

“Hi, Kiril. Welcome to your newhome. From now on, your nameis number 47. Follow me.”

Jumbo took the prisoner to hiscell, gave him a kleenex, andlocked the door.

Life in prison really stunk. The bread was always staleand the water had a funny taste. But the worst thingwas working on the rock pile. Every day meant anotherten hours of sweat and blisters. What a pain!

The weeks went slowly by and Kiril made friends withthe other inmates. His best pals were Larry and Moe.Sometimes they got to play chess together.

Moe Pawn was in jail for chess misconduct. Once in atournament, he stuck a rook up his opponent’s nose!Another time he set off a firecracker at chess club, andalmost blew up half the building!

Larry was a computer nerd. His favourite crime washacking into chess programs. He liked to give them avirus that lets the pawns move backwards!

And so the months went slowly by. Every night Kirildreamt about the things he missed: soft pillows, pizza, and especially his mom.

Then one summer afternoon, Jumbo said, “Hey, 47,I want you to meet your new cellmate.”

Kiril couldn’t believe his eyeballs when he saw whowas standing there. ELVIS PAWNSLEY, the King ofRock’n’Roll.

“Gee, Elvis, I thought you were dead.”Elvis laughed when he heard that! “No sirree, Kiril,

I was just staying out of sight for a while.”“But, Elvis, what are doing here in jail?”“That’s a long story, Kiril.

I was caught in a trap.Someone took somethingthat belonged to a friendof mine, and I was tryingto get it back for them. Assoon as I took it though, the police were waiting forme.”

Kiril felt sad for Elvis. Buthe was glad too. Now hehad another friend to playchess with!

Number 47 and Number 3 (that’s Elvis) had a gameeveryday after that. And # 47 lost them all! That’s whyElvis called Kiril his good luck charm!Well, at least Kiril had Moe and Larry to beat.

It was a chilly rainy morning at the rock pile when Elvisfirst told him about his plan to escape. “Kiril, I’ve gotta get out of this place! I have an idea

how to do it, but I’ll need help. What do you say?”“Gee, Elvis, I don’t know. Won’t we get in trouble?”“Well, there is a risk. But I’m going no matter what. It’s

Step one was to convince Jumbo Pawn to let themhave a party in the jail. With cold pop, hot pizza, andlive rock’n’roll! Step two was to get a band together. The tricky part was step three.

So they started with step two. Elvis thought Kiril wouldmake a good drummer. And they got Larry and Moeto play guitars. With the king on vocals, this band wasready to jam!

Black gets a quick executionwith 14...Kg8 15.Qb3!

After 14...Ke8 15.Qh5+ Blackhas a choice of four evils:

* 15...Kf8 16.Qf7#* 15...Ng6 16.Nxh7!* 15...g6 16.Nf6+ Kf8 17.Qh6#* 15...Kd7!? 16.Nf7!

and White is much better.

Surprisingly, 14...Kf8 ! wouldallow Black to hold on after15.Qf3+ Nf5! 16.Nxb6 axb617.Nh3 Qf6 or 15.Qh5 Qe8!16.Nxh7+ Rxh7 17.Qxh7 Be6with 2 B’s against R+P.

Well, it’s one for the money,Two for the show,

Three to get ready,Now go, cat, go!

The band was jumping and thejoint began to swing. You shouldhave heard them jailbirds sing!Everybody in the whole cell blockwas dancing. Even Jumbo!

The pawns played all of theking’s hits. Their last numberof the night was “You Ain’tNothing But A Hound Dog!” When Kiril hit the final beat,

Elvis gave Jumbo the signalto turn off the lights. Hedidn’t miss his cue.

The crowd started cheering like crazy. “Bravo! More!More! Encore!” They all wanted another song!

But when Jumbo turned the lights back on, the stagewas bare. And he was left standing there, with emptinessall around.

Bugsy the Pawnbeater was the first oneto realize what happened. He stood up onhis chair and announced, “Ladies andgentlemen, Elvis has left the building.”

As the cold wind blows, four desperatepawns climb down over the prison wall.Moe forgot to get out of the way and Larrylanded right on his head! Moe got even bykicking him in the butt!

Elvis was the last one on the ground. Hegave Kiril a pat on the back and said,“C’mon, guys, let’s get outta here!”

WHO’SWHO’S THETHE GOOF?GOOF?1. White has 2 queens, no king.2. Black has 3 bishops.3. Black has impossible doubled pawns. To reach a4,

the black c-pawn would have to capture twice, but white is only missing one piece.

4. White is in an impossible check. The last move couldnot be ...f5-f4+ because if the pawn were on f5, whitewould already be in check from the bishop on e4.
