College Jump-Start: The 2007 Summer Academy The 2007 Summer Academy helped incoming Freshman in the Merit Scholars Program prepare for the new school year by allowing them to take an English and Math course. While taking these classes the scholars had the privilege of taking a trip to the Museum of Modern Art and learning about the connection between Math and Art. The Scholars enjoyed themselves and have a great appreciation for the opportunity York College offered to them.
Welcome Back! Scholar Picnic The 2007 Merit Scholars arranged a picnic
for all the scholars to have a day of fun and
relaxation before the stress of the Fall
Semester begins. At this event we played
games, listened to music, played sports,
ate and mingled amongst the groups.

Play Ball York Scholar Family Day at Shea
The Merit Scholars were invited to attend a Met game at Shea Stadium on September 8. The theme of the day was “Family Day at Shea.” Along with bringing parents and siblings as their family guest the scholars realized that they had become a family with their fellow scholars. We ate hot dogs, got free blankets, and even got to yell out PEANUTS OVER HERE!!!!

The Scholarship Center
New Office Under Construction While the Scholarship Center is temporarily located in room 1D10, the actual center is currently being built upstairs in the 4D area. The move will hopefully occur at the beginning of next semester.
These are the plans for the center and what it will look
The Second Annual Scholar Reception 4th On Thursday, October the
Merit Scholars Program held its second Reception to welcome the scholars. At the reception we had many guess speakers. Including Doctor Linda Michelle Baron (Picture on the right) who read her famous poem “You are just too much.” This poem touched many people at the reception and afterwards she signed posters of her poem that she gave the scholars as a gift.
Hitting the Books: Tutoring and Study Groups
As a Merit Scholar you are required to keep a 3.25 GPA. There are people who will help the Scholars with their studies and advise them on future options for their major. Being a Scholar is not about competing against each other for more scholarships but rather helping each other succeed. During these times we don’t just build up our GPA we build friendships.

First in Line for the spring: Advisement and Early Registration for the Scholars
As Merit Scholars, students have the opportunity to register before the rest of the college. This is an important advantage because students are given first choice of classes as soon as they open. Early Registration for the 2008 Spring and Winter Semesters will begin on November 19.
