Greetings! It is my great pleasure to share Schola Cantorum’s 53rd season with you. The choosing of repertoire is exciting, daunting, and crucial to the development of both a chorus and an audience. We are thrilled to present some of the greatest works in choral literature this year: Handel’s Dixit Dominus, J.S. Bach’s Christ lag in Todesbanden, and the towering masterpiece by Claudio Monteverdi, Vespers of 1610. In addition, we are fashioning a beautiful holiday concert with our longtime friend and collaborator, harpist Daniel Levitan, featuring Conrad Susa’s evocative carols from the Southwest, along with traditional carol arrangements and our popular community carol-sing. The season concludes with a program culled from works that Schola Cantorum has commissioned or premiered, featuring works by Royal Stanton, Kirke Mechem, and Dawn Reyen’s premiere setting of last season’s poetry contest winner, Sonnet Phelps’ Love Poem in Blue. Please join me and the singers of Schola Cantorum as we present a season of signifi cant and affecting choral works — just for you!

Gregory Wait, Music DirectorGregory Wait has enjoyed a richly varied musical career as a singer, conductor and teacher. Named the Billie Bennett Achilles Director of Vocal Studies on the Stanford University Music Department faculty, he also conducted the Stanford Memorial Church Choir for 30 years. This season marks his 28th anniversary conducting Schola Cantorum. The recipient of the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching from Stanford University, Mr. Wait was also presented the Arts Leadership Award by Silicon Valley Creates for his tireless work in the support of choral arts.

Dear Schola Family,What makes Schola Cantorum unique? Schola offers a great group of carefully auditioned singers, an amazing conductor, talented chamber ensembles and accompanists, and a wonderfully balanced repertoire. In addition to performances, we have outreach programs at schools, and offer many sing-along opportunities for the community. If you’ve enjoyed our concerts or Sings, we hope you’ll spread the word and invite others. And if you’re a singer and would like to join the choir, please sign up for an audition — we’d love to make more friends! Thank you for your support of Schola Cantorum.

Bach and Handel, both born in Germany in 1685, pursued their musical lives in vastly different ways. Bach remained at home, writing primarily for the church while advancing the high Baroque style. Handel roamed to Italy, where he absorbed the Italian style and wrote (among much more) the virtuosic Dixit Dominus, then ventured on to England where the foundation of his fame would be the English oratorio.

Christmas Angels Holiday ConcertSunday, December 18th; 3:00 pm – Mountain View Center for the Performing ArtsConcert Sponsor: Ann StevensSoloists: Daniel Levitan, harp; Scott Sorkin, guitar

The holiday season is celebrated with a return visit from audience favorite, virtuoso harpist Daniel Levitan. Evocative carols and harp solos will be followed by a performance of Conrad Susa’s Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest. The composer describes the work as a “collection of traditional Spanish carols…cast in an image of a Southwestern piñata party for the new baby.” Of course, we will have our traditional carol sing-along to culminate the festivities!

Monteverdi Vespers of 1610Saturday, March 18th; 7:00 pm - Mission Santa Clara de AsísConcert Sponsor: John MurdenSoloists: (Images clockwise from the top) The Whole Noyse; Angelique Zuluaga, soprano; David Kurtenbach, tenor;Andrew Metzger, tenor; Daniel Borup, baritone

Schola Cantorum commemorates the 450th anniversary of the birth of Claudio Monteverdi with its fi rst performance of Vespers of 1610. Rarely performed, this work is profound both in its intimacy and grandeur, as well as sacredness and sensuality. Monteverdi offers up varying textures and sonorities in brilliant instrumental writing, magnifi cent choruses, and emotional solo arias and duets. Maestro Wait has chosen the Mission Santa Clara de Asís for its acoustics, which are perfectly suited for this work.
