Day 1: JAKARTA We start with the tour of Jakarta Old Town, known as Oud Batavia (Dutch "Old Batavia"), the first walled settlement of the Dutch in Jakarta area and the de facto capital of the Dutch East Indies. The area of Jakarta Old Town has been rejuvenated, preserving the Old Square, the Original City Hall (now known as Museum Fatahillah), The Old Post Office and several other colonial buildings, now used as museums. After the tour, followed by "gala dinner", "ice breakers" and “reunion old buddies” in Cafe Batavia in the Square. This Cafe offers iconic colonial ambiance and original-style Dutch East Indies cuisine. http://www.indonesia.travel/en/post/explore-jakarta-kota-tua-today-s-old-batavia

We will go straight to Mount Bromo with bus, it will take around 3 hours to reach the Hotel. Hope you could sleep in the bus to preserve energy. Check in “Hotel Lava View”, located high and close to the crater. The bus cannot reach the Hotel, we will be shuttled with smaller cars. Don’t expect too much of the Hotel, as it is in the mountain, probably like a “home stay” but it has very good view of the Mountain and the Crater and will be good enough to take a rest and nap before climbing to the peak. Temperature in the mountain can be cool, not horribly cold, prepare jackets and sweaters and don’t forget comfortable shoes and pants for walking.

Day 3: MOUNT BROMO – SURABAYA We start very early in the morning at 3 am to see the “sun rise” from “Penanjakan Peak”. We will ride 4x4 Jeep, 1970’s/80’s RetroToyota Hardtop. For those who worked in Balikpapan/Sumatra in late 70’s/80’s, that was our Engineer’s car. They have hundreds in the crater to take tourists to the peak, various colors, quite a sight. Each Jeep can carry 4 to 5 people, not too comfortable but for 20 to 30 minutes ride, it could be fun.

From “Penanjakan Peak” and we pray for clear sky (which should be the case in May), we will witness a stunning sunrise and amazing view of the surrounding mountains.

After taking lots of photos, we descent to the “large crater of sea of sands”, there is a Hindu Temple in this mountain desert (we may not be able to go in, it is a sacred place for the locals). Then we can walk and climb 250 stairs up to see the “ kawah or live crater”, quite an amazing sight. We can take our time and walk slowly, we can ride a horse to an area before climbing the stairs, the horses are not big and very tame. Unfortunately we cannot use the jeep to go up to the “ kawah or live crater”.

For those who choose not to climb up to see the “kawah or live crater”, we can ride around the sea of sands with the jeep.

Figure 9: Like in Bali, the people in Bromo are Hindu, they built a temple in Bromo Crater
Then we go back to “Lava View Hotel”, take a brunch, check out and return to Surabaya with the bus. Arriving early afternoon in Surabaya, we check in to Hotel Alana, I suggest we rest after a long day in Bromo, take it easy and have dinner in the Hotel, but for those who want to venture Surabaya, we can make the arrangement. But we will start early again to take train to Yogyakarta the following day.
