Dear readers!

As we approach the end of the year, I would like to express my personal thanks to all our employees for their hard work, their commitment and their trust. 2015 was a very eventful year for SCHÄFER, but also for my family and myself.

In July, my brother Gerhard passed away aged almost 91 years, after a very eventful and fulfilled life. Over the coming Christmas period, we will remember him with great sadness and grief, but also with gratitude and trust in God.

Once again recent events have shown that the energy and common objectives of our different divisions form the basis for successful operation and outstanding performance. We can, therefore, also look to the coming year 2016 with confidence. Our participation at the two most recent trade fairs, the BrauBeviale in Nuremberg (p. 4) and the Blechexpo in Stuttgart (p. 8) has again confirmed the importance of direct, personal contact to our customers, suppliers and partners.

As a family enterprise with clearly defined goals, we continually set new milestones – together with our customers. And we will continue our course, combining tradition and innovation, in the future, too.

I now hope you will all enjoy reading the latest issue of our magazine, in which you can, in the customary manner, find out a lot of interesting information about the activities of our company.

I would like to wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and a healthy and successful new year.

Obituary

In July, with the deepest sympathy and the

greatest respect, we said farewell to our partner

Gerhard Schäfer

The managing partner of the SSI SCHÄFER Group suddenly passed away on 19th July 2015 aged almost 91 years. With him, we have lost an outstanding entrepreneurial personality and a charismatic human being, who influenced and guided the SCHÄFER Group throughout seven decades. Gerhard Schäfer was the first apprentice at the company founded by his father in 1937. After his father’s early death in 1951, he took over the running of the company together with his 3 brothers Hans, Manfred and Theo Schäfer and initiated a period of impressive development and diversification.

NOV. | 15 dialog 0 3

Right until the end, he carried out his tasks and duties in the business every day. For him, the company’s development always took priority. His keen sense of what was feasible was both orientation and motivation for the staff.

We are very grateful for his life’s work and, in his memory, will continue to do all in our power to ensure the success of the SCHÄFER Group in future.

He will always be held in continuing and grateful memory.

Even more KEG diversity at the BrauBeviale 2015

From 10th – 12th November 2015, SCHÄFER Container Systems exhibited an even larger KEG range at the BrauBeviale in Nuremberg. With four additional KEG types, the beverage container specialists presen- ted the visitors to their 182 m² stand an exclusive KEG portfolio which is unequalled on the market. The 10-litre stainless steel KEG, the 30-litre Party KEG and the 37.5-litre freshKEG supply additional filling volumes to their respective KEG families. A brand new addition is the DIN type ECO KEG, a new KEG type, based on the tried and tested ECO KEG system. The stainless steel liner

is up to 30 percent lighter than its all-steel counterparts, while offering high stability due to the built-in shock absorber effect. Because of the special head and foot rim molding, the KEG is stackable with other DIN KEG types. On top of that, of course, our regular fair highlight: beer tasting with the first beer sommelier world champion Karl Schiffner, who this year delighted our visitors with a range of British beers from our smart-DRAFT dispensing system.

To guarantee consistently high quality in the finished product while the complex-ity of the standard equipment is increasing, there are industrial standards – and not only in the car industry – for suppliers, including suppliers of automotive components, of course. In addition to these standards, car manufacturers today even go as far as to test the suppliers on their own premises in individual testing procedures known as audits. This is to ensure that the manu-facturer’s quality demands are being fulfilled and that production processes and guide-lines are in line with the required standards. The threshold for suppliers in the automotive industry is very high, as vast ecological re-sources are involved and, ultimately, human lives could be at stake. As a supplier of coils, slit strip, cut-to-size blanks and perforated sheets, SCHÄFER has always been synonymous with the highest standards of quality. With this in mind, the new SCHÄFER Expanded Metal division was certified by TÜV Rheinland (the technical standards authority) in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 directly after it was set up in May 2015. This quality management norm is recognised worldwide and proves to customers that the new division’s management systems complies with certain standards when implementing quality management. In addition, SCHÄFER Expanded Metal has already passed a number of audits by well-known companies in the automotive sector in the past few months and is now a certified supplier of their products.

When we buy a car, whether new or used,

there’s one thing we really want above all

else – good quality! That starts with the

basic security features like airbags or brakes

and goes up to details of the high-gloss

manufacturers are constantly coming up

with new ideas in this respect, making their

cars increasingly complex – parking assist

Vorarlberg brewery Fohrenburg backs SCHÄFER

The Fohrenburg beers with the unicorn in their brand logo are greatly appreciated by many skiing and hiking tourists, and so are the soft drinks and table waters of the tra-ditional brand Diezano, which has also belonged to Fohrenburg since 1938. And anyone who has stopped for a refreshment break at one of the remote chalets in the region may well have witnessed drink KEGs being delivered by helicopter, due to the lack of reliable access roads. It’s a truly spectacular sight that no holiday maker will forget in a hurry. For its beverages, the enterprise chose ECO KEGs from SCHÄFER Container Systems and the decisive selling point was their quality. This is because operating pressure has always been a major challenge for Fohrenburg. Whereas beer KEGs are desi-gned for a pressure of 3 bar, barrels for alcoholic free beverages (AFB) have to with-stand a pressure of 7 bar. The AFB kegs from previous Fohrenburg suppliers didn’t fully meet these demands, which is why the brewery chose quality KEGs from SCHÄFER. Equipped with AFB fittings, these barrels, when empty, have only two-thirds the weight of 100 % steel barrels. Thanks to these benefits, everyone at Fohrenburg is extremely satisfied: ”The ECO KEGs from SCHÄFER meet all the requirements that have to be fulfilled under the difficult transport conditions in our mountain region”, says master brewer Andreas Rosa. “And on top of that, they have an excellent price/performance ratio and countless quality benefits. We haven’t regretted our decision to choose SCHÄFER for a single moment.”

Quality starts with your staff and ends with your customers

SCHÄFER Expanded Metal passes automobile audits

New sales manager for SCHÄFER Expanded MetalWith over ten years’ experience in the expanded metal sector, Alexan-der Toumassian, who most recently worked as Business Development Manager, has been reinforcing the SCHÄFER Expanded Metal team since July 1st. 2015. His declared aim: “In this sector, together with my team, we would like to grow and at the same time provide our customers with high-quality solutions for their individual requirements.”

Expanded metal is used for making radiator grills, for example, or sometimes for much less visible components, such as filter and exhaust systems. An integral part of such supplier audits is sup-plier management, for instance, which, by

means of regulated processes, ensures that the supplied parts reach the production lines on time. Packaging, labelling and dispatch also play an important role in this connection. Other factors in the audit are the manufac-turing process with all its various stages (ex-panding the metal sheets, rolling, rinsing and slitting), regular training courses for em- ployees, inspection of the measuring and testing equipment used to guarantee con- sistent quality both for incoming goods and during the actual production of SCHÄFER Ex- panded Metal, the quality management system but also tidiness, cleanliness and work safety in the production area. SCHÄFER’s newly established business division has been able to fulfil countless individual specifications from car manufacturers without any trouble and can, on the one hand, guarantee the customer’s product quality and, on the other, make its own contribution to safety and protection, not only for the benefit of final consumers.

The EMW Steel Service Centre presented an impressive array of steel services this year on the 120 m2 stand shared with SCHÄFER Perforated Metal and SCHÄFER Expanded Metal. For years, the Blechexpo in Stuttgart has been a fixed date in the EMW events calendar and, for seasoned Blechexpo visitors, the design and organisation of the joint EMW and SCHÄFER Perforated Metal stand will also be a familiar sight. In May 2015, the SCHÄFER WERKE Group added the new Expanded Metal division, thus achieving a synergy that is unique in the German steel industry. The great advantage is the short delivery paths between the neighbouring production sites on the Pfannenberg and an extremely high level of flexibility, which customers of all divisions can profit from. With the slogan “Steel expertise – leading through knowledge”, EMW or-ganised two full-day specialist seminars this year. These seminars, presented for the first time, were aimed at purchasers, project managers and QA staff of EMW customers. The speakers came from Arcelor Mittal and EMW’s technical customer service. Besides the funda- mental principles of steel production, current trends and development were discussed. A further focal point was the properties and application fields of auto-mobile grades as well as the European steel norms in the automobile sector. In the lecture “Finding a way through the Norm Jungle”, participants obtained an

overview of all relevant EU norms and a comparison of the many and varied standards in the car manufacturing industry. The event concluded with a guided tour of the plant and some interesting behind-the-scenes insights into one of Germany’s leading steel service centres. The seminars were adjudged a great success by all participants. Besides the quality of the lectures, participants par- ticularly praised the opportunity to exchange experiences with other steel experts. EMW intends to repeat these seminars regularly in the coming years to strengthen the subject of steel as a key issue for the future.

New field service man for the local areaTeam gains experienced reinforcement

Since May 2015, the Steel Service Centre has had a new, experienced field service professional in the team. Born in Wilnsdorf, Matthias Preissler now looks after customers in the re- gions of south Westphalia, north Hesse and northern Rhineland-Palatinate and besides his years of field service experience, he also has the required knowledge of the steel business. “On the steel market,” Preissler says, “we are facing increasing challenges. So, I’m looking forward to realising lots of exciting projects with our customers and would like to take this opportu-nity to say thank you for the warm welcome I’ve been given in the EMW team.”

Less is more Spray systems for targeted precision lubrication

For more than 15 years, this company, which has recently begun production at its new headquarters, has been supplying re-nowned enterprises and premium brands from all over the world. Schmidt develops and installs bespoke pro-duction line spray systems for the car industry, the food industry and punching equipment. These systems are either built into existing production lines or specially developed for completely new lines. The spray systems ensure that the metal is lubricated in specified places before punching to reduce frictional resistance and thus ease the burden on the tools.

Together, we’re strong – team building days at SCHÄFER What counts in a good team is trust, togetherness and the good feeling of knowing that you can rely on every one of your team colleagues. When that’s the case, working processes run smoothly, common challenges are mastered successfully and work is an enjoyable experience.

When industry needs to focus on minimum amounts, when dosing literally has to be spot on and the

utmost precision is the basic requirement, then one name often springs to mind among those who know

this business worldwide: Schmidt Microdosiertechnik from Neunkirchen-Altenseelbach.

In the food industry, for example, the high-precision devices spray release agents into moulds for sweets to enable the delicious works of art to slip out undamaged. But micro-dosing equipment from Schmidt is also used in cleaning the systems and disinfecting food conveyor belts.Installed in every machine, there is a pressure container designed for up to 8 bar which forces the liquid substances, whether water, oil, anti-corrosion or release agents, through feeder pipes at a controlled pressure to the spray nozzles. These containers must comply with specific pressure equipment guide-lines and also be approved for hazardous substances, in case subsequent contents fall into this category. Schmidt Microdosier- technik found a reliable and certified supplier for its pressure vessels in SCHÄFER Container Systems. The specialist for manufacturing

For this reason, SCHÄFER Container Systems IBC organised their first team building days with the aim of strengthening the work-life balance and the feeling of “togetherness”. Last May, German and Czech colleagues from the fields of design, production and sales met and spent two whole days together. On the first day, after a walk around the Pfannenberg/Neunkirchen site, the main focus was the evening’s cooking event in the company’s own casino. The team prepared a menu and, after their work was completed, enjoyed the very tasty results for the rest of the evening. Day 2 began with a workshop on “Improving production and sales procedures” and ended with a little more activity and new things to discover. On their visit to the nearby “Bindweide Mine”, the participants took a trip through the history of the region on the mine railway and went “underground” to learn a little about the role of mining in the past.

Schmidt Microdosiertechnik mounts TÜV-approved safety valves, fittings, seals, supply pipes and sometimes even mixing devices and heaters.“With pressure vessels in particular, the safety aspect, in the worst case, is decisive for saving people’s lives. Here, we need precision and the highest quality, something we can only pro- vide with the right partners. That SCHÄFER would be our choice was fairly obvious after the initial meetings. The fact that they’re only five kilometres down the road was just the proverbial icing on the cake”, says Udo Schmidt, founder and managing director. And so these two Neunkirchen companies prove once again the economic strength of the Siegerland region, when it comes to quality “Made in Germany”.

Children’s nursery in its prize-winning cloakSCHÄFER supplies perforated sheets for facade panels

This is what a children’s day nursery can also look like: the building that houses the “Miniapolis” children’s nursery in Essen’s “ThyssenKrupp quarter”, captivates the eye with its clarity of form in a classic modern style and blends harmoniously into the area’s overall structural framework. The architectural highlight is the facade, made with perforated sheets from SCHÄFER. For this design, the responsible architects, Chaix & Morel et Associés in Paris and JWSD Architects in Cologne, received the coveted 1st Steel Innovation Award for 2015 in the category “Steel in Construction” from the German Steel Federation. The technical coolness of the facade design reflects the stylistic concept of the quarter in general and, at the same time, illustrates the nursery’s pedagogic objectives: the intention is to arouse the children’s interest in technology

Resident in Essen’s “ThyssenKrupp quarter”, the modern “Miniapolis” children’s nursery provides all-day care

for around 100 children. The building’s architectural highlight is its steel facade, based on perforated sheets

from SCHÄFER, and was the winner of the 2015 1st Steel Innovation Award.

Perforated facade sheets in three dimensional design

and science at an early stage and, following the so-called “Reggio Emilia” approach, pro-mote the individual talents of each child. The facade’s characteristic appearance is created by the three-dimensional shaping

and optically seamless arrangement of the individual perforated sheets. They drape themselves around the actual building like a cloak, even covering the windows of some adjacent rooms. The way they are shaped and positioned creates the impres-sion of ripples of water, flowing gently over the building. This soft, wave-like design is a strong contrast to the rectangular con- struction of the nursery and immediately links into the friendly interior of the building, which is characterised by bright colours, wooden playing apparatus and warm light. The panels of the award-winning facade were manufactured by the Ingolstadt com- pany Fielitz GmbH, who shaped the perfo-rated sheets produced by SCHÄFER using a special, new deep-drawing process. This involves pressing the flat, one millimetre thick, smoothed perforated sheets of

The ThyssenKrupp nursery “Miniapolis” was opened in August 2012 and has all-day care places for about 100 children in six mixed-age groups. Situated in green landscaped surroundings with a spacious outside playing area, it creates an atmosphere of well-being for little explorers. The vibrant facade design, based on SCHÄFER Perforated Metal sheets, also contributes to this and connects the nursery seamlessly to the rest of the quarter – in every respect, a successful architectural concept.

What wood chips have got to do with metal platesSCHÄFER Perforated Metal now supply bridge slot perforated plates, extending their range especially for the agricultural industry.

What have wood chips got to do with metal plates? As the name suggests, bridge slot perforated plates have lots of little bridge-type slots on their surfaces, through which air and water can circulate very well. Wood fibres or so-called wood chips, but also grain, tea, seeds or other materials that have to be kept in dry storage, feel very much at home on metal sheets with bridge slot perforations. The good ventilation pre- vents mould formation and also the self-heating of the stored products. So that the materials can be transported and sorted by warehouse vehicles, such as ex- cavators, the metal plates are extremely strong and can take the weight of larger vehicles driving on them.

Keeping a cool head

A special feature of the university data centre is its “supercomputer”, which lies in 80th place on the list of the world’s 100 fastest computers. Such a level of performance has to be secured. In 2010, Mannheim University wanted to upgrade the climate control technology in the machine room to cope with the increased performance. technology in the data centre) decided to redesign the entire data centre. Since August 2015, there have been a total of 53 racks and 21 side coolers in an area of 100 square metres. The extension of the data centre was en-trusted to SCHÄFER IT-Systems – and for good reason: “I first looked at a number of companies before choosing the SCHÄFER concept. In 2010, the same company installed the coolers, but in a central cold aisle and not

in the individual cabinets. Today, cold aisle enclosures are standard, so there are good reasons why this approach is better and more reliable”, says Winkens.

pressor installed directly on the roof of the building. An additional indirect, free cooling system of 20 m² takes the ambi-ent coldness from the air on the roof and cools the entire cycle on the way to the water-cooled LOOPUS Side Coolers. They then suck in warm air from the back of the room, cool it down and expel it into the enclosed, so-called, cold aisle. This way, high heat loads per rack can be dealt with and flexible, effective climate control achieved. The third element is a direct free cooling system that blows 8,800 m3/h of external air directly into the warm aisle section, thus relieving the compressor on

the roof. In the event of a complete power outage, there is an emergency cooling system with a diesel power generator.

More data traffic needs more data linesParallel to this, an emergency data centre was commissioned on the campus. About 500 metres from the actual data centre, there are a number of other SCHÄFER racks containing seven emergency data cabinets, temperature controlled by 3 side coolers. Besides the backup function, this is also where the source of the actual data centre performance can be found: here the university has its broadband connection to

the BelWü, Baden-Württemberg’s extended LAN. That is the federal state’s scientific network, to which all universities, applied science colleges and over 1,000 schools are connected. At the same time, a separate dedicated line connects the emergency data centre to Germany’s main internet hub, the DE-CIX, in Frankfurt. So this is how the University of Mannheim’s data centre, with the help of SCHÄFER IT-Systems, manages to keep a cool head and guarantee its own high performance.

Since September 2015, as part of its series of innovation meetings, SCHÄFER IT-Systems has been collaborating with Bachmann GmbH and is now offering a range of individual and complete data centre power supply solutions together with the manufacturer of intelligent and non-intelligent power distribution units, so-called PDUs. Besides the functions of a conventional multi-socket outlet strip, which is supplying power to various devices, PDUs offer additional func-tions, such as remote control, measurement control, surge protection or alarm functions. This enables data centre operators to control their consumption more efficiently, evaluate energy indicators better and detect leakage current early.

The Dutch company AkzoNobel is a manu-facturer of special chemicals and a market leader in the paints and lacquers industry. It has around 46,000 employees and is represented in 80 countries; in Germany in cities like Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart, the Baden-Württemberg state capital. There the 300-strong workforce mainly supplies the target markets of Germany, Austria and Switzerland with paints for car repair businesses. AkzoNobel does of course use the computer cabinets in its own production process, in particular to offer their customers the best possible support, by making order processes more convenient, for instance. With the help of the cabinets, which are delivered with all the required hard and software, the paint shop can order the paint or lacquer the customer needs. Cabinet is an old word for a small, enclosed room for working in.

Correspondingly, computer cabinets are basically locker systems

in which computers are enclosed to protect them from dust or

moisture, for example. As one of the manufacturers of bespoke

from dust and moisture and ultimately contribute to strengthening customer loyalty.

The long-standing, trusting partnership be-tween SCHÄFER and AkzoNobel is of mutual benefit: From AkzoNobel, SCHÄFER obtains the powder coatings used for its sheet metal housings and enclosures. “We’re extremely satisfied”, says Rainer Vogel, head of logis-tics planning and purchasing at AkzoNobel Coatings GmbH. “There are good reasons why our partnership has lasted for so many years. It’s especially good that the cabinets don’t have to be installed or assembled. They are delivered as finished products and are immediately ready for use.”

For anyone who has to concentrate on their work, make tele-phone calls or process important data, the close proximity of such noise levels can quickly become unbearable and influence both work methods and work quality. Last year, SCHÄFER Interior Systems and SCHÄFER SHOP collaborated on developing a noise protection system for offices (report in dialog, issue 02/2014). An actual product as

Switch off the noiseEffective noise protection in the work environment

We all know the saying “You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs”, but in the context of

industrial production, the downside isn’t so much broken eggshells but noise. Punching machines, presses

and other equipment, workers themselves or other outside influences like goods transports all have an

enormous effect on noise levels at work.

proof for the synergies within the SCHÄFER Group.

Now, there is also a modular noise protection system available for industry – sound absorption class B according to DIN ISO 354 (500-5.000 Hz). The system is highly adaptable and can create comfort zones in specified places to cut out factory noise levels from the outside and dampen sound on the inside. The sound-proof walls are available with feet, to enable permanent screw-fastening to the

floor, or as mobile walls on rollers, allowing the soundproofed area to be chosen more flexibly. These low-noise areas improve concentration levels and have been shown to improve the working climate and conse-quently the feeling of well-being at work. Offering young people prospects for a good career has always been a major concern for this family enterprise. In the last 10 years alone, the group, with its 8,500 employees worldwide, has given over 1,000 trainees the opportunity to lay a solid foundation for their future by providing them with qualified vocational training. At the Jobs-SI careers fairs, SCHÄFER pre- sented their training possibilities and study programmes, with which they aim to recruit new employees and actively counteract the impending shortage of skilled employees on the job market from their own ranks.

The future needs young talent As the group is among the top training companies in the region, there are a great many benefits to learning a commercial or industrial profession here. And there are plenty of qualifications to choose from. Training is practice-based and the super- vision is personal and extensive. To give the trainees additional support, there are in-house courses parallel to those at the vocational training college. Special exam preparation courses, workshop and further training courses provide the optimal supple-ment to the overall training concept.

The dual track course to a fast career start In cooperation with various universities, including the University of Siegen, the SCHÄFER Group offers dual study courses – for example in business management, design engineering and industrial engineer-ing with business studies. Here, parallel to their theoretical studies at the university, students can gain practical experience in the company during the lecture-free period between semesters. This enables students to participate in interesting projects early on and to be financially independent during their studies. The relatively short training period and the strong practical aspect open up excellent prospects for starting their future careers.

Come and “check us out”“The proof of the pudding is in the eating”, as they say, and the difference between theore-tical knowledge and day-to-day practice can be great. But, mostly, people only realize this once they have actually started working.SCHÄFER offers a great range of work-expe-rience possibilities to give insights into pro-cedures and processes inside the company

at an early stage. Whether job orientation for school pupils, general and subject-related placements during courses or project work and theses as component parts of training or university courses, students and trainees can
