2

At this time of year, there is always one question I am asked as we rejoice at Simchat Torah, “Rabbi, why do we have to start all over and read the same Torah stories every single year?”

This is a fair question if you consider the fact that we could spend the next 100 years reading the Prophets, Writings, Mishna, and Gemarra together every Shabbat. So why do we read the Torah every year and then start all over again at Simchat Torah?

The reason is because the basis of Judaism can be found in our Torah. We must review the same Biblical concepts every year to be reminded of our inherent vision for redeeming and perfecting the world.

For example, at the beginning of the first book of the Torah, Bereishit, we learn the concept of ethical mono-theism. This is the idea that God requires ethical behav-ior from every human being because before God, we were all created equally, in God’s own image. This idea eventually changed the way in which governments treat their citizens.

In the second book of our Torah, Shemot, the master story of our people begins. God frees us from Egyptian slavery and brings us to Mt. Sinai to be God’s people. And when we mark this unprecedented event, we can be proud of the impact it has had on liberation movements throughout the world. Many of these movements includ-ing the abolitionist movement of the 1800’s, the 1960’s civil rights movement, the Solidarity movement in Poland and many of the pro-democracy movements in the Far East, have employed the language of our Book of Exodus. They have used it as their blueprint for bringing freedom to their people. Let us continue to share this first story of a people’s redemption to other oppressed peoples across the nation and around the globe.

The book of Vayikra introduced to the world the idea of holiness on earth. We learned that holiness is not reserved for the heavens above, but also intended for the human realm on earth. We understood that God gave us the tools, our religious rituals and ethical

mitzvoth to create sacred space here. What an inspiring notion! In a world where so many people need the light of God’s presence, let us share the insight that God can be found even in everyday occurrences such as what we eat, how we conduct our business and how we relate to spouses and

children.

Our Book of Bemidbar is a reminder that life is lived in a wilderness—a wilderness of temptations, disappoint-ments and failures. Yet, through God’s help, we are taught to persevere through our setbacks and hope for the best: that in the end, our life journeys are worth-while and can be fulfilling.

In the final book of our Torah, the Book of Devarim, we again learn that life is not perfect—or even fair—at times. At the end of this book, we read about the death of Moses and the fact that the entire generation that left Egypt did not make it to the Promised Land. Yet, even though the end is clear, the Children of Israel still try to improve their condition, their homes, and their relation-ships. Like the Israelites, we must never give up. We will continue with the utmost determination to make the world better, despite its shortcomings. Our people have learned this for thousands of years from our Torah. It is in our blood. It is ingrained in our souls.

Some may claim that the “gems” of our Torah are reserved for us. This is not the case. If we are ever hesi-tant or afraid to share the ideas of our Torah with oth-ers, we must remember that God did not give us the Torah in Jerusalem, not even in Israel, but in the desert to signify that God’s gift, our Torah, can be shared with others.

That is where we come in. It is our job as Jewish people to make the concepts and ideas of our Torah accessi-ble to the rest of humanity. This has always been our challenge and will always be our goal. This is why we must review these eternal values every year. By doing so, we not only bring a great light into the world, we also strengthen our own people by providing our young and ourselves with a mission to fulfill.

As you can see, we have much to celebrate as we dance again with our Sifrei Torah this Simchat Torah.

October 2008 3

Throughout the year I will be introducing you to different members of our TBS family. This month, I

would like you to meet Alan White.

Alan chuckled when I called and asked if he was watch-ing the Giants/Redskins game because I didn’t want to disturb him. “No,” he replied. “I am watching a gourmet cooking show!”

Alan is a self-taught cook and my mouth was watering as he was telling me about his hobby. He told me that his favorite show is the original Japanese version of Iron Chef. He finds the techniques fascinating to watch, as well as how seriously the chefs take themselves.

Alan’s roasted chicken, cooked in a smoker to keep in all the juices, is done with salt, pepper, onion powder, and sometimes lemon, ginger and garlic in the cavity. This is Sandra’s, Alan’s wife, favorite meal.

Is your mouth watering? If not, it will be after you hear about his gravlax! It is cured salmon with kosher salt and brown sugar. No cooking is needed, just enjoy in five days!

Alan is mostly a self-taught cook, although he learned from his father, a deli-restaurateur and caterer, how to make pickled herring from smaltz herring! After my stomach stopped asking for food, I told Alan that Sister-hood is gathering recipes for a cookbook. He has already submitted a few recipes.

Alan’s cooking touches many mouths and stomachs, just as his voice touches many ears and hearts. On the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Alan will be standing before our congregation, chanting the Haftorah.

“I am humbly honored,” said Alan, when he realized the congregation enjoys listening to him sing. Alan and Sandra have been members of Temple Beth Sholom since 1987. For the past 35 years or so, Alan spent the High

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Holidays in Massachusetts at his father’s Orthodox synagogue, always chanting that Haftorah. When Alan’s father passed on last December, Rabbi Scolnic asked him to be a part of our services.

Being part of a service comes naturally to Alan. Alan said that years ago, when he

was saying Kaddish for his mother, he began driving long-time member Irving Mannes to services. At that time, Irving led all the daily minyans. When Irving passed on, Alan volunteered to follow in Irving’s footsteps by leading Sunday morning services. He wanted to be there for those who needed to say Kaddish as they had been there for him. Alan has also led Shacharit on Yom Kippur for many years. Having taken the leadership role at our Temple, he said he had to switch from Ashkenazic pronunciation to the Sephardic pronunciation. With help from Henry Cohen’s tape of the service and studying some of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach’s chants, he also relied on his childhood memory of the melodies. He also admits having included a few “idiosyncratic embellishments!”

“It has always been a great honor to do the morning Yom Kippur service,” said Alan. “By the time I complete the opening words, G-d is King enthroned supreme, -- I am cruising at 35,000 feet spiritually. There are so many parts of the service that move me intensely.”

We have grown accustomed to hearing Alan’s beautiful uplifting melodies in synagogue and we are glad that Temple Beth Sholom is there for him and that he is part of our family.

“OOPS” — The deadline for the September Bulletin was August 12th and since I knew that Ellen Casper would be the entertain-ment for our August 25th meeting as well as what we would be

serving, I wrote the article and submitted it on August 12th. I thought the Bulletin would arrive in your mailboxes on the 27th or 28th of August. Lo and behold, some Temple members received their Bulletins on the 22nd of August (Ellen Casper being one of them). Steve and Elaine Salinger were really on the ball with getting the Bulletin out early. Ellen brought it to my attention at the end of the program and we all had a good laugh. Since you all know what transpired that Monday, I would like to share a few pictures of that day with you.

October 2008 5

Greetings again from the Men’s Club. Remember, the Club meets at the synagogue on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at

7:30PM. All male Temple members are automatically members of the Club. Thank you to those who have already mailed in dues. Because of your dues the Club can present programs and contribute to the financial welfare of the Temple.

You should have received your Temple calendar, compli-ments of the Club. Thanks to those who placed ads and supported as patrons; but, most of all, the Club thanks Linda and Bob Brooks because without their staunch efforts there would be no calendar.

Now, about programming, please come to the Sunday, October 26th, Krav Maga, Israeli Martial Arts demonstra-tion and Israeli luncheon program at 11:15AM. It will be great and I have asked the instructor, a Master Instructor of Xtreme Survival Krav Maga, to offer attendees simple instruction on how children and adults (especially women) can escape potentially threatening circum-stances. The entire program is free and open to every-one. Hebrew school is early release that day to encour-age children’s attendance. Please see the publicity piece about this program elsewhere on this page.

Next, on November 16th at 1PM the Club will honor its own Elliot Alderman as the “Keeper of the Flame” at a lunch-eon held at TBS. Area Temples will honor their “Keepers” here also. All households will receive an invitation to the event shortly.

Upcoming programs include: 1) a Thursday, December 25th, free open breakfast; 2) a Saturday night, January 9th, live band dance party (hopefully with the same band “Triple Play” as last year); and 3) a February week-day night Club dinner. Please mark these programs on your (Temple Men’s Club) calendar.

The Club is also considering a QU/Yale hockey game on Saturday night, January 31st, and another Spring bus trip to the NY Jewish Heritage Museum. Look forward to the Club’s traditional World Wide Wrap and the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle project programs.

As I mentioned last month, this year the Club is interested in a charitable undertak-ing and expects to work with the Temple’s Social Action Committee. (Diane, please think of something the Club can do and call me. Thanks.) About the Club’s interest in creating a Holocaust memorial at the Temple, if anyone has any information about the old Torah scroll downstairs please contact me.

MEN’S CLUB

We would like to thank the following Patrons for their generous support of our Calendar:

Lynn & Michael Osber Michelle Murphy

Harold Katz

While I have your attention I want to mention in this space, because I can, the names of a few Temple volun-teers who I notice play vital roles in and out of sight. They are Miriam and Harvey Massey, Joan Levine, Stacey and Evan Wyner, Mike Osber, Shira Rosenblatt, Alan White, Toby Gillman, Marty and Susan Squire, Henry Cohen, Michelle Murphy, and Stu Miller. If you spend any time at the Temple you know what these people, and other unnamed volunteers, do in rolling up their sleeves and contributing to the proper functioning of the Temple.

The Club continues to extend its best wishes for a speedy recovery to Al Harary.

Please consider becoming involved in the Club and come to the next meeting in October. As you can see above, the Club has much to do and much to take credit for too. Finally, the Club extends wishes for a happy, healthy, prosperous, and sweet new year to all. Shalom.

School started, and one young woman met her classmates in style. When Charlene Rigsbee, our adopted social worker at the Department of Chil-

dren and Families, sought our help to provide one of her clients with new clothes and a haircut, Temple members generously donated the funds to make a shopping spree and trip to the beauty salon possible.

Now as the High Holidays are upon us, I remind everyone of our major food collection at Kol Nidre, to benefit the Hamden Food Bank. This an opportunity for all Temple members to make a difference in the lives of those whose monthly checks, in these hard economic times, do not always stretch to cover life’s essentials.

Here’s what you can do:

Step 1. Purchase a bag full of non-perishable staples such as: tuna fish, peanut butter, crackers, breakfast cereal, chili, stew, pasta, sauces, soups, rice, cornmeal, flour, peas, beans, evaporated or powdered milk, macaroni and cheese, cooking oil.

Step 2. Put this bag where you’ll see it when leaving your house.

Step 3. Pick up the bag as you are rushing to Kol Nidre.

Step 4. Drop the bag with (not on) the ushers as you enter the front door of Temple Beth Sholom.

On Yom Kippur we experience hunger for a day. Think of what chronic hunger feels like, and be as generous as you can.

Many thanks for your continuing support,

Diane Kaplan 248-8319 evenings
