THE GREAT JOINT DACHSHUND ASSOCIATIONEstablished 1937

Hon. Secretary/Treasurer Mrs C. G. Brace

Cup StewardMiss C. Gibson

ChairmanMr I Seath

The Association came into being as a result of a proposal made by Air Vice Marshall Sir Charles Lambe KCB, and Miss Theo Watts, at that time Chairman and Hon. Secretary respectively of the Wirehaired Dachshund Club. The first show was held at Tattersalls in 1932 under the title of the Wire Haired Dachshund Club. In view of its success it was decided to repeat the venture and invitations were issued to the Southern and Longhaired Dachshund Clubs to join the Wirehaired Club in forming an Association in which the Smooths, Longs and Wires would be equally represented. Both Clubs accepted the invitation and the 1933 show was held under tri-partite representation, with an entry of 450. The registration of the title “The Great Joint Dachshund Association” was granted by the Kennel Club in 1937.

The Great Joint Dachshund show became an annual event until 1939 when the outbreak of war interrupted the Association’s activities.

In 1946 the Wire and Longhaired Clubs staged a joint Championship Show for the two va-rieties. The following year the three Clubs staged a three breed event on the lines of the pre-war fixtures.

In 1948 the Miniature Dachshund Club joined the Association. In 1949 all five varieties of Dachshund competed for Challenge Certificates, the Miniature Wires gaining Certificates in 1961.

WEIGHING OF MINIATURE DACHSHUNDSHealth and Welfare Statement

The desired maximum weight of Miniature Dachshunds is 11 lbs. The Committee wishes to make it clear to exhibitors that the health and welfare of all dogs entered at The Great Joint Dachshund Association events is of the highest importance. The Animal Welfare Act became law on 6 April 2007. The focus is now on the responsibility of the owner, as seen in the ‘Duty of Care’. Those who own a dog are legally responsible for its welfare, otherwise they may be found to be committing a ‘Welfare Offence’.The Committee may take action against any exhibitors who are found to be depriving their dogs of water and/or food in order to meet the desired maximum weight requirement for Miniatures in the Breed Standard.Exhibits which appear thin and undernourished should be seriously penalised by judges.

FOULINGWe are very fortunate to have this venue, and the Committee urgently request that all dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, and that in the event of accidental fouling, the mess MUST be cleaned up by the owner/handler. There is a clearly marked exercise area provided for exhibits.

CHILDRENChildren under the age of 11 are the responsibility of and must be accompanied

at all times by a parent or Guardian. Parents are reminded that if bringing children to the show, they will be fully responsible for their children’s actions, and if any damage or accidents occur, the costs will be passed on by The Great Joint Dachshund Association to the parents.

MOBILE pHONES SHOULD NOT BE SWITCHED ON AT THE RINGSIDE.

No Dog/Bitch other than one officially entered shall be brought into the limits of the Dog Show during its continuance except registered assistance dogs (see Rule 24).

DOGS IN VEHICLES ON HOT DAYSExhibitors are reminded that in the event of dogs left in vehicles being found in a distressed condition, remedial action will be taken in accordance with Kennel Club Guidelines.

16 DOGS IN VEHICLES ON HOT DAYS Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.

● When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.

● If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.

● The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink.

● Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.

Page 10: Schedule of Info/GJDA 2018 Schedule1.pdf · 2018. 9. 3. · Tel: 02920 614339 DELEGATES The Longhaired Dachshund Club Mrs A. Latham-Jackson Mrs J. Geeson Mr M. Sanders The Southern

10

● When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle. ● Keep the dog in the shade – take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have

plenty of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated. ● Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for

extended lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could

lead to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE

MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILILTY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to

ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations.

Right to Refuse Entries. Exhibitors are reminded that show societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry.

Show. Any examination thus ordered will be made by a person having executive authority who shall have a written directive from the Kennel Club in their possession. Samples may be taken for further examination and analysis.

5 An individual has the right to lodge an objection to a dog only if he/she is the owner or handler of a dog competing in the same breed or class. An objection may however, be lodged by an official of the Show or by anyone so deputed by the Kennel Club. It will be the responsibility of the individual who lodges the objection or the official (as appropriate), to substantiate the grounds for the objection. The Kennel Club will substantiate the grounds for an objection made on its behalf.

6 Any objection by an individual related to an infringement of these Regulation must be made in writing to the Show Secretary at his/her office before the close of the Show and the individual must produce evidence of identity at the time of lodging the complaint.

29 The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at a Kennel Club licensed event must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event)

30 A dog may be disqualified by the Board from any award, whether an objection has been lodged or not, if proved amongst other things to have been a) registered or recorded as having been bred by the scheduled judge, this shall not apply to a judge appointed in an emergency; b) exhibited without payment of the appropriate entry fees.

31 The Judge will be instructed and empowered to withhold the prize or prizes in any class if, in his opinion, the dogs exhibited do not possess sufficient merit. The Judge is not empowered to give prizes beyond those offered in this schedule and such awards shall not be counted as a win except consent of the Secretary first being obtained in writing.

32 Every exhibitor shall ensure that whilst the dog is being exhibited, its handler shall display the correct ring number.

33 Use of Electrical Equipment at Shows The Kennel Club is becoming increasingly concerned at the amount of electrical equipment being used by exhibitors at shows, including hair dryers and hair straighteners and other grooming devices. Electrical equipment should not be brought to shows unless absolutely necessary. In rare instances where it might be required, it should be PAT tested and permission sought from the secretary of the show before it is used.
