Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family.

A Holy Community through Holy Communion! Your brother in Jesus,

Fr. William Dotson

Save The Date for Unity Day

At the Last Supper, Jesus prayed for his disciples, “that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.” Jesus not only wanted His disci-ples to be united as one, but also stated that the unity of His disciples is necessary if the world is to believe in the Gospel.

Unfortunately, even in the New Testament we see divisions forming in the Church: ethnic divisions, economic divisions, ideological divisions. As sinful people, we tend to create division, and we need the Holy Spirit to continually give us the grace to overcome them. For ten years now, our parish has held an annual Unity Day as a means of praying that God will heal our divisions.

Please plan on joining us on Sept 10 at 11am at DuSable Park for our Unity Day Mass and Picnic. Also note that, because of the Unity Day Mass, there will be NO 10:00 or 11:30 Mass in the church on Sept 10.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time– July 30, 2017

Saint of the Week-St. John Vianney– August 4 Feast date St. John Vianney is the Patron Saint of Parish Priests.

Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney, known as John in English, was born May 8, 1786 in Dardilly, France and was baptized the same day. He was the fourth of six children born to Matthieu and Marie Vianney. John was raised in a Catholic home and the family often helped the poor and housed St. Bene-dict Joseph Labre when he made his pilgrimage to Rome. In 1790, when the anticlerical Terror phase of the French Revolution forced priests to work in secrecy or face execution, young Vianney believed the priests were heroes. He continued to believe in the bravery of priests and received his First Communion catechism instructions in private by two nuns who lost their convents to the Revolution. At 13-years-old, John made his first communion and prepared for his confirmation in secrecy. When he was 20-years-old, John was allowed to leave the family farm to learn at a "prsbytery-school" in Écully. There he learned math, history, geography and Latin. As his education had been disrupted by the French Revolution, he struggled in his studies, particularly with Latin, but worked hard to learn.

In 1802, the Catholic Church was reestablished in France and religious freedom and peace spread throughout the country. Unfortunately, in 1809, John was drafted into Napoleon Bonaparte's armies. He had been studying as an ecclesias-tical student, which was a protected title and would normally have excepted him from military services, but Napoleon had withdrawn the exemption in some dioceses as he required more soldiers. Two days into his service, John fell ill and required hospitalization. As his troop continued, he stopped in at a church where he prayed. There he met a young man who volun-teered to return him to his group, but instead led him deep into the mountains where military deserters met. John lived with them for one year and two months. He used the name Jerome Vincent and opened a school for the nearby village of Les Noes' children.

John remained in Les Noes and hid when gendarmes came in search of deserters until 1810, when deserters were granted amnesty. Now free, John returned to Écully and resumed his ecclesiastic studies. He attended a minor seminary, Abbe Balley, in 1812 and was eventually ordained a deacon in June 1815.He joined his heroes as a priest August 12, 1815 in the Couvent des Minimes de Grenoble. His first Mass was celebrated the next day and he was appointed assistant to Bal-ley in Écully. Three years later, when Balley passed away, Fr. John Vianney was appointed parish priest of the Ars parish.

With help from Catherine Lassagne and Benedicta Lerdet, La Providence, a home for girls, was established in Ars. When he began his priestly duties, Fr. Vianney realized many were either ignorant or indifferent to religion as a result of the French Revolution. Many danced and drank on Sundays or worked in their fields .Fr. Vianney spent much time in confession and often delivered homilies against blasphemy and dancing. Finally, if parishioners did not give up dancing, he refused them absolution. He spent 11 to twelve hours each day working to reconcile people with God. In the summer months, he often worked 16-hour days and refused to retire. His fame spread until people began to travel to him in 1827. Within thirty years, it is said he received up to 20,000 pilgrims each year. He was deeply devoted to St. Philomena and erected a chapel and shrine in her honor. When he later became deathly ill but miraculously recovered, he attributed his health to St. Philo-mena's intercession.

By 1853, Fr. Vianney had attempted to run away from Ars four times, each attempt with the intention of becoming a monk but decided after the final time that it was not to be. Six years later, he passed away and left behind a legacy of faith and was viewed as the champion of the poor. On October 3, 1873, Pope Pius IX proclaimed Fr. Vianney as "venerable" and on January 8, 1905, Pope Pius X beatified him. St. John Vianney was canonized on May 31, 1925. His feast day was de-clared August 9 but it was changed twice before it fell to August 4.

Prayer of St. John Vianney

I love You, O my God, and my only desire is to love You until the last breath of my life. I love You, O my infinitely lovable God, and I would rather die loving You, than live without loving You.

I love You, Lord and the only grace I ask is to love You eternally... My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You, I want my heart to repeat it to You as often as I

draw breath.

Send your spirit of hope to their lives, that they may believe in themselves and know they are needed in this world. Grace them with the gift of joy that they may celebrate life through laughter and tears alike.

Guide us, as we continue to grow in appreciation of the many gifts of young people, in the ministry opportunities we offer to them, in the journey of faith we walk with them, in our shared mission as a community called to disci-

A Note of Thanks to Our Faithful and Loving Funeral Choir Dear Friends, Yesterday my family was at the funeral of Harold Mazanec,-my husband’s uncle, the brother of his 96-year-old mother, who is still very much with us. Music is important to our family and I wondered who would be available to sing a funeral on a very hot day in the

middle of July. We were so pleased...and very much comforted by the quality of the music (harmony) and the obvious dedication of the choir members. Please thank all who were there and assure the choir that their ministry does make a big difference in the worship experience of those who are mourning a loss of someone dear to them. It is indeed holy work.

Gratefully, Paige Byrne Shortal

Words of Wisdom from our Saint this Week

St. John Vianney would often say: "Private prayer is like straw scattered here and there: If you set it on fire, it makes a lot of little flames. But gather these straws into a bundle and light them, and you get a mighty fire, ris-ing like a column into the sky; public prayer is like that."

Abby Johnson is a widely recognized Catholic speaker who was once the director of one of Planned Parenthood’s largest clinics where she came face to face with the reality of abortion. She shares an insider’s perspective about the true motivations of the abortion industry, and her courageous journey away from it and towards life. Her story is a testament to God’s grace and mercy, and the joy that comes from being an advocate for life.

Prayerfully, consider purchasing this CD on the value of Human Life. They are in the Narthex for a minimum donation of $4.00. There will be more topics and CDs available in the upcoming weeks. Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

July 30—Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel, we find that the demand of daily Chris-tians living is to spend our life primarily searching for the kingdom of God. This month through your gifts to the So-ciety of St. Vincent de Paul, they were able to assist 102 people, made 14 home visits, provided 304 meals and paid $5789.00 for utility and rent bills, etc...THANK YOU!

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your

Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

Like the person who found the buried treasure and the merchant who acquired the pearl of great price, we seek to find the signs of the kingdom of heaven in our lives. In fact, we even work to bring about God’s kingdom in our actions and in our words. We pray that our family values reflect our pursuit of the kingdom of heaven. As Jesus’ disciples, we place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God.

As you gather as a family, talk about what your family values. Make a list together of those things that your family considers most important, such as family, friends, faith, trust, and love. Place this list before you as you read today’s Gospel in its shorter form, Matthew 13:44-46. In these parables, Jesus teaches us that it is worth giving up even valuable things in order to possess the kingdom of heaven.

Look at the list your family made and talk about how these things are important to the kingdom of heaven.

What has your family given up to make these values important in your life?

What is Jesus saying to us about the importance and value of the Kingdom of Heaven?

July 30, 2017 - 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Stewardship Reflection

“We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” - ROMANS 8:28

Do you really trust God? Do you believe that all things work for good? Faith is a challenge for every-one at times. Putting our trust in God, in everything we do, means that God’s plan for our lives may be different than our plan. When one door closes, an-other one opens. Trust in God, His plan is always better.

Who is a Catechist? A catechist is a person of faith who lives the baptismal call by sharing his/her faith with others. They help bring others to Christ through the traditions and teachings of the Catholic faith. By being a catechist. You will find many unexpected blessings. Here are a few good reasons why you should become a catechist . . .

their relationship with Jesus You’ll be sharing with others 2000-year-old tradition that continues to changes lives Jesus sent us to “go and

teach all nations” A Catechist is a person that:

Loves God~ And, desires a deeper knowledge of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit Ponders the Gospel~ And, finds joy sharing life stories that echo the Good News. Let catechists tell you for themselves... “With no experience, no time, no great knowledge of my faith, I had every good reason to say “no”. But, when I

knew my kid’s class needed help, I said I’d do it for one year. So here I am, years later. “In helping to meet a need in our parish, God has been filling my need to belong to our community and grow in my

faith.” What is the commitment of the Catechist, Catechist assistant and/or group facilitator?
