As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

-Fr. William Dotson

From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco After discussion with the Finance Committee, we are look-ing to establish an endowment fund for St. Charles Borro-meo Parish under the management of the Roman Catholic Foundation of Eastern Missouri. An endowment fund will create an ongoing source of revenue for our parish. Parish-ioners can contribute to the endowment through planned giving, often done by bequests or by naming the parish en-dowment as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retire-ment account. By donating to the endowment fund, parish-ioners receive the satisfaction in knowing that their contri-bution will make a significant, ongoing impact at St. Charles Borromeo. In order to establish an endowment fund, we need a mini-mum investment of $25,000. This is the time of year when many people make yearend gifts. We are asking you to con-sider donating to the startup funds for our endowment as part of your yearend giving. You can put your donation in an envelope labelled “Endowment” or by using electronic giving via Faith Direct (faithdirect.net, parish code MO903). Please remember that any yearend gifts to the parish must be received by December 31.

Did you know if you are age 70.5 or older, you can distribute up to $100,000 tax-free each year from your IRA account to benefit St. Charles Borromeo Parish? For details on contributing to St. Charles Borromeo with an IRA Charitable Rollover, please contact the planned giving experts at the Roman Catholic Foundation. 314.918.2893 | [email protected]

An Advent Prayer

Oh, Lord, be with us now as we gather around this wreath. As we light these candles, may this time together open our eyes to see your love in our lives and in the love we share for each other. Help us to

be grateful for all of the ways you shine a light in the darkness of our hearts. Let us feel that love from you and be grateful for it. Open our hearts to those who have so much less than we do; those whose lives are so full of pain that they cannot see the light of your love. Show us how to carry that light to other people. Amen.

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

December 23, 2018 Fourth Sunday in Advent

Jesus was born during the night of the year when darkness is the longest. The Savior of the world

comes for the people in dark places. the real, lasting , and deep joy is that the Light

shines there.

Through your gift to the Society of St. Vin-cent de Paul, “Light” has shown, bringing

real, lasting, and deep joy to the hearts of the poor who live in dark places in our streets and neighbor-

hoods.

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

On this the last Sunday before Christmas, our Gospel reading prepares us to witness Christ's birth by showing us how Jesus was recognized as Israel's long-awaited Messiah even before his birth. The Gospel turns our attention from the ministry of John the Baptist to the events that preceded John the Baptist's birth. The story of John the Baptist and his par-ents, Elizabeth and Zechariah, are reported only in Luke's Gos-pel. Luke pairs the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus, estab-lishing John's early connection to the Messiah.

Our Gospel reading recalls Mary's actions after the announcement of Jesus' birth by the angel Gabriel. Mary goes to visit Elizabeth, her cousin, who is also with child. Elizabeth greets Mary with full recognition of the roles that they and their unborn children will play in God's plan for salvation. If we were to continue to read the verses that follow in Luke's Gospel, we would hear Mary respond to Elizabeth's greeting with her song of praise, the Magnificat. Both women recall and echo God's history of showing favor upon the people of Israel.

In Luke's Gospel the Holy Spirit helps reveal Jesus' identity as God to those who believe. Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and sings Mary's praise because she bears the Lord. We sing these words of praise to Mary in the Hail Mary. Even John the Baptist, the unborn child in Elizabeth's womb, is said to recognize the presence of the Lord and leaps for joy.

It is appropriate in this season of Advent that we con-sider the role of Mary in God's plan of salvation. Elizabeth describes Mary as the first disciple, as the one who believed that God's word to her would be fulfilled. Mary's faith enabled her to recognize the work of God in her people's history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to everyone. Because of this, Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan for salvation.

A quote from St. Stephen, The First Martyr But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, look-ing up steadfastly to heaven, saw the glory

of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And he said: Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man

standing on the right hand of God. St Stephen from Acts 7:55

--Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J.
