Dear Emeritus Students and Community,

Fall is the beginning of the academic year at Saddleback College, a time of anticipation and renewal for colleges everywhere. The Emeritus Institute is again excited to renew our commitment to quality educational opportunities for older adults. In our Fall Schedule of Classes you’ll find listed, more than 175 classes and 17 disciplines scheduled in facilities throughout the community. Our comprehensive offerings will allow new students to find a course, time and location that will fit perfectly into a busy schedule. Returning students will see their familiar, favorite classes and instructors as well as opportunities to explore something brand new.

As the year begins, we are reminded of the ongoing state budget issues and their impact on higher education. The current status of these issues and their effect on the Emeritus Institute remains unchanged. State apportionment for non-credit older adult programs will continue at least through the approaching 2014-15 academic year and the classes currently offered in the Emeritus Institute will generally remain the same. Beyond next year however, funding is hopeful but less certain. What is certain is the continued commitment of the Board of Trustees and College President in supporting the Emeritus Institute and its continuing mission. Change may indeed be part of our future, but we hope it will present an opportunity to extend and enhance our 37 years of service to the community.

Recently, the Emeritus Institute has joined with Saddleback College Community Education and the K-12 Partnerships to form the college’s newest operating unit. The Division of CE, EI & K-12 Partnerships will be led by Saddleback College Dean, Dr. Estella Castillo-Garrison. Dr. Garrison previously served as the Director of Community Education and will bring a wealth of experience to the Emeritus Institute. Her bio may be found on page 11. We are indeed fortunate to benefit from Dr. Garrison’s energy, enthusiasm and skilled leadership, especially as we look to the future.

A peek at our journey ahead certainly reveals challenges, opportunities and we hope successes. We invite you to be an important part of that journey. The Emeritus Institute faculty and staff welcome you to the 2014-2015 Fall semester and hope that whether you’re new to the college or a returning student, your experience with us will be extraordinary.

Terrill L. Robinson Acting Director, Emeritus Institute

What a wonderful, diverse palette to choose from, including classes in photography, slideshow presentation, art appreciation, film, birding, yoga, and what great instructors, who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their subject matter.”

Founded in 1976, the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute was established to create lifelong learning opportunities, primarily for the older adult. A dynamic and wide array of course offerings, expert instructors truly experienced in their field, and a variety of classes located in the community have made the Emeritus Institute extremely popular, and one of the fastest growing programs at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo throughout the years. As the generations of burgeoning baby boomers become senior citizens, the Emeritus Institute continues to change and offer classes that stimulate intellectual, physical, and creative expression for South Orange County residents.

There is a wide variety of classes offered through the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute that provide wonderful lifelong learning experiences in mulitple disciplines. These high-quality academic programs are state-approved and available on a non-credit basis. Classes cover a wide range of interests, from accounting, art, crafts, biology, clothing and textiles, English writing and literature, gerontology, health, history, music, photography, physical fitness, Spanish, special services, and theatre. Classes are held in more than 25 off-campus sites from San Clemente in the south to Laguna Woods to the north, including senior centers, churches, libraries, and community centers.

An integral part of Saddleback College and its educational vision, the Emeritus Institute is a leader in providing challenging and rewarding courses designed for the older adult to accommodate the lifelong learning needs of our community members.

We invite you to be a part of the excitement of lifelong learning. Join the growing number of active adults taking part in the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute.
