First Reading Is 42:1-4, 6-7

Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street. A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for his teaching. I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 29:1-2, 3-4, 9-10 R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Give to the LORD, you sons of God, give to the LORD glory and praise, Give to the LORD the glory due his name; adore the LORD in holy attire. R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters, the LORD, over vast waters. The voice of the LORD is mighty; the voice of the LORD is majestic. R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all say, “Glory!” The LORD is enthroned above the flood; the LORD is enthroned as king forever. R. The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Second Reading Acts 10:34-38

Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”

Alleluia Mk 9:7 R. Alleluia, alleluia.

The heavens were opened and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, listen to him. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Mt 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him. After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Just One Request

“Dear Master for this coming year Just one request I bring: I do not pray for happiness, Or any earthly thing— I do not ask to understand The way Thou leadest me, But this I ask: Teach me to do The thing that pleaseth Thee.

I want to know Thy guiding voice, To walk with thee each day. Dear Master make me swift to hear And ready to obey. And thus the year I now begin A happy year will be— If I am seeking just to do The thing that pleaseth Thee”

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. What is the Sign of the Cross? Not all prayers are made with words. Prayers may also be made by gestures. Chris ans, like followers of all other religions, prac cally always pray by the posi on of the body – say, kneeling or standing, with hands outstretched or folded in front. Because we are both body and soul, we pray with both.

Why do we Catholics dip our fingers in the holy water at the entrance of the church and make the sign of the cross? There is a world of meaning in that gesture, that ceremony. The water in those fonts remind us of Christ going down into the waters of the Jordan. That water reminds us of our own bap sm by which we entered into God’s family, the Communion of Saints. It shows the cleanness of heart and mind with which a Catholic should take part in the worship of God. The sign of the cross made over our body means washing away the distrac ons and tempta ons of the world as we enter God’s house to worship Him. The bap sm of John the Bap st was a sort of purifica on; our entrance prayer is a sort of purifica on. Making the sign of the cross reminds us that Jesus died on the Cross for all of us, saints as well as sinners. It reminds us that we are entering the church to offer up the same Sacrifice of the Cross, the Holy Mass. The sign of the cross recalls and renews our faith in the Holy Trinity. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were all present at the Bap sm of Our Lord, as the gospel of Ma hew relates. The Holy Spirit is present in a special way in every Mass. The sign of the cross signifies the dedica on of one’s en re being, body and soul, to the service of God. It is a simple, beau ful, profession of faith. It shows that we as Catholic Chris ans are not only members of the group gathered to worship God but also belong to the greater Community of Saints, namely the Church Triumphant in heaven, the Church Militant on earth, and the Church Sufferance in purgatory. Just as we are buried with Christ in the waters of bap sm, so shall we rise with Him. His death and resurrec on are renewed in the Mass. We make the sign of the cross as we leave church, strengthened with God’s life, encouraged by God’s word, and nourished with God’s Body. When our earth’s life is over and when we appear at the Pearly Gates, we shall have the

INFANT BAPTISM Although in the Early Church it appears that mainly adult converts were bap zed, there is some evidence in the New Testament that children or infants were bap zed as well. In Acts 2:38-39 -- Peter said, “Do penance and be bap zed every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins and you shall receive the gi of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and your children” and the New Testament speaks of the bap sm of “whole households”, which in the normal Greek usage would include children. St. Paul drew a parallel between bap sm and circumcision, which was normally administered to children. Jesus himself urged that li le children be allowed to come to him for his blessing, “for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Mk 10:14). Although the Bible does not explicitly command that infants and children be bap zed, it does not forbid this prac ce. The Early Church decided that infant bap sm was legi mate. Considerable evidence of this prac ce is found beginning in the third century A.D., and by the fi h century, bap sm of infants was universally accepted throughout the Church. St. Augus ne explained the importance of bap zing infants for the remission (forgiveness) of original sin. Chris an parents bap zed their children because they desired their salva on, which came through sharing in the new life in Christ conferred in the sacrament of bap sm. *********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

TEN COMMANMENTS OF HUMAN RELATIONS: 1. Speak to people. There is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of gree ng. 2. Smile at people. It takes 72 muscles to frown; 14 to smile. 3. Call people by name. The sweetest music is the sound of one’s own name. 4. Be friendly and helpful. 5. Be cordial. Speak and act as if everything you do is genuine pleasure. 6. Be genuinely interested in people. You can like everybody if you try. 7. Be generous with praise --- cau ous with cri cism. 8. Be considerate of the feelings of others. It will be appreciated. 9. Be though ul of the opinions of others. There are three sides to a controversy --yours, the other fellow’s, and the right one. 10. Be alert to give service. What counts most in life is what we do for others.
