A bowl team and the nation’s highest scoring offense a season ago, the Bulldogs (1-2) dropped their conference opener to Tulane last Thursday and are also looking to get back on track under new head coach Skip Holtz. Kansas (1-1) has been among the nation’s leaders in pass defense, having allowed just one passing touchdown with three interceptions through two games. Kansas running back James Sims continues his climb up the career rushing charts and moved into fifth place with another 100-yard performance in KU’s loss to Rice last weekend. The Jayhawks and Bulldogs will be meeting for the fourth time, with Kansas leading the all-time series 2-1, all in Lawrence. THIS DAY IN KANSAS FOOTBALL HISTORY Kansas is 4-3-2 all-time in games played on Sept. 21st, with the first game dating back to an 1895 match-up against Midland in Atchison, Kan., which KU won 28-0. Most recently, Kansas dropped a 39-16 decision to Bowling Green in Lawrence during the 2002 season, Mark Mangino’s first year as head coach. Kansas had won two straight on Sept. 21st, with wins over Indiana State (1985) and New Mexico State (1991). KANSAS-LOUISIANA TECH CONNECTIONS The Jayhawks and Bulldogs have both dipped into the Texas high school and national junior college ranks and share a number of potential connections in both areas. Kansas junior defensive lineman Keon Stowers went to Georgia Military Academy, as did LA Tech’s Tre Carter (OL), Kevin Gary (WR) and Terome Grant (WR). Bulldog corner Josh Ross and KU offensive lineman Ngalu Fusimalohi both played at City College of San Francisco. Louisiana Tech defensive lineman Devon McKinney played at Pierce College in California, as did Kansas players Brandon Holloman (DB), Marquel Combs (DL) and Marcus Jenkins-Moore (LB). Current Jayhawk defensive quality control assistant Ty Greenwood was previously the defensive coordinator at Pierce. In the high school ranks, there’s an age gap, but KU’s Alex Matlock and LA Tech’s IK Enemkpali are both from Plugerville (Texas) HS. Bulldog offensive lineman Jens Danielson is from Wichita, Kan., and went to Andover Central High School. Although he went to high school in Houston, KU redshirt freshman DB Greg Allen grew up in New Orleans. Among other connections, Kansas assistant defensive backs coach Scott Vestal was a graduate assistant at Louisiana Tech. back Kenneth Dixon averaged nearly 100 yards per game last year, while running for more than 1,000 yards as a freshman All-

American, but has seen his per-game production cut in half during the early portion of the 2013 slate, while battling a knee injury.

Tevin King was the Bulldogs’ starter in 2012 before suff ering an injury of his own and has led the Bulldogs with 96.3 yards per

game and 7.0 yards per carry.

SCOUTING THE LOUISIANA TECH DEFENSE

The Louisiana Tech off ense took the biggest hit in the off -season with eight starters lost, but the defense wasn’t far behind with

seven starters lost. Among this year’s leading tacklers, only defensive back Le’Vander Liggins, was among last year’s top-10

tacklers and he’s fi fth among 2013 tackling leaders with 17 through three games. Liggins is tied for the team lead as one of three

Bulldogs with an interception this season. Graduate transfer Daniel Cobb, who played for Texas Tech in KU’s overtime loss to the

Red Raiders last year, has set up shop in the opposing team’s backfi eld with a team-leading eight tackles for loss. IK Enemkpali,

a 2012 First Team All-WAC selection, has been equally disruptive for opponents with a team-best 4.5 sacks and an interception

from the defensive line. The Bulldogs recorded six sacks in their Conference USA debut against Tulane last Thursday but gave up

370 yards in the process. Sophomore defensive back Kentrell Brice is the Bulldogs’ leading tackler with 26 total stops.

LOUISIANA TECH HEAD COACH SKIP HOLTZ

Holtz is in his fi rst season as Louisiana Tech’s head coach following a three-year stint at South Florida and previous head

coaching stops at East Carolina and Connecticut. Holtz has participated in 15 postseason games in his coaching career, including

seven as a head coach and eight as an assistant coach. Of the seven games as head coach, fi ve occurred in the Football Bowl

Subdivision (FBS) and two occurred in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Holtz and Kansas head coach Charlie Weis

share Notre Dame as their alma mater.

KANSAS-RICE LEFTOVERS

• Kansas dropped to 574-581-58 all-time.

• The Jayhawks are 27-63-4 all-time against teams from Texas and have lost 14-straight games against teams from the Lone Star state.

• With the loss, Kansas’ losing streak in games away from Memorial Stadium extended to 23-straight, including 20-straight true

road games.

• This was Kansas’ fi rst trip to Rice Stadium since downing the Owls, 33-7, on Dec. 16, 1961, for the Bluebonnet Bowl.

• For the eighth-straight game, Kansas’ opponent scored fi rst and the Jayhawks trailed at the end of the fi rst quarter.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

• On Kansas’ opening drive, quarterback Jake Heaps threw his fi rst interception of the season which was returned 51 yards for a

touchdown. It was the fi rst interception returned for a touchdown against Kansas since the Baylor game in 2010.

• Heaps’ 77-yard touchdown pass to Tony Pierson was the longest of each of their respective careers. It was also the longest

passing play by the Jayhawks since Nov. 10, 2007 when Todd Reesing completed an 82-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Henry

against Oklahoma State. Heaps’ previous longest was 68 yards against Colorado State when he played for BYU.

• James Sims busted loose for a 39-yard run with just over six minutes remaining in the third period. He fi nished the game with

109 yards on 19 carries. With his 109 yards, Sims now has 2,685 yards for his career which ranks No. 5 all-time in Kansas history.

It was his 12th career 100-yard rushing game.

• Heaps’ 1-yard touchdown plunge with 1:01 left in the third quarter marked his fi rst rushing touchdown at Kansas and the third

in his career.

• Tre’ Parmalee matched his career high with two catches. He fi nished with 23 yards receiving.

• Heaps’ 14 completions and 157 passing yards were each personal bests in a Kansas uniform.

• Kansas fi nished with 100 rushing yards, which was the fewest by the Jayhawks since rushing for 77 against TCU last season.

• The Jayhawks had more passing yards (170) than rushing yards (100) for the fi rst time since the Oklahoma State game last season.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

• Junior linebacker Ben Heeney posted 13 tackles in the fi rst half and fi nished with a career-high 18 stops. It marked the sixth

double-digit tackle eff ort in Heeney’s career.

• Dating back to last season, Heeney has collected a sack in each of his last three games - marking the fi rst three quarterback

sacks of his career. Heeney also recorded a pair of pass breakups equaling his career total entering the game.

• Sophomore Isaiah Johnson collected his fi rst-career interception in the third quarter, which was the second by the Jayhawks

this season. Johnson also fi nished with a career-best seven tackles.

• Junior Dexter McDonald also picked up his fi rst-career interception at the 13:30 mark of the fourth quarter. The pick gave

Kansas two interceptions for the fi rst time in fi ve games with the last coming against Texas last season.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

• Junior Trevor Pardula booted a 59-yard punt late in the fi rst quarter, which marked his longest kick in his KU career.

TOP PERFORMERS - OFFENSE: JAMES SIMS, HB, SR., 6-0, 200, IRVING, TEXAS

Sims recorded his 12th career 100-yard rushing game as he put accumulated 109 rushing yards on 19 carries at Rice. With his 109 yards,

Sims now has 2,685 yards for his career which ranks No. 5 all-time in Kansas history. He passed David Winbush (2,608) and Kansas

greats John Riggins (2,659) and Gale Sayers (2,675) on the KU all-time rushing chart in KU’s outing at Rice. Sims’ 12th 100-yard game

moved him into a tie with Jon Cornish on the KU all-time list for 100-yard games. Sims also had three catches for 14 yards in the game.

TOP PERFORMERS - DEFENSE: BEN HEENEY, LB, JR., 6-1, 230, HUTCHINSON, KAN.

Heeney was all over the fi eld for the Jayhawk defense as he set a new career-high with 18 tackles at Rice. Heeney tallied 11 solo

stops and also had 2.5 TFLs for a loss of 12 yards, one sack for a loss of eight yards and a career-best two pass breakups. The

18 tackles marked Heeney’s sixth double-fi gure tackling game of his career. His sack for a loss of eight yards marked the third-

straight game he has recorded a sack.

TOP PERFORMERS - SPECIAL TEAMS: TREVOR PARDULA, P/K, JR., 6-5, 212, SAN JOSE, CALIF.

Pardula punted six times for 278 yards, turning in a 47.8 yards per punt average. He recorded a career long punt of 59 yards and

also dropped two punts inside the 20-yard line. Additionally, Pardula kicked off for the Jayhawks—notching touchbacks on all

three of his kickoff s.

IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S ME

Kansas junior cornerback Dexter McDonald has made breaking up look easy – passes anyway. Through two games the Kansas

City, Mo., native has fi ve break-ups, including three at Rice. Coupled with his fi rst career interception against the Owls, McDonald

leads the Big 12 Conference and is tied for the national lead with San Jose State’s Bene Benwikere in passes defended with 3.0

per game. McDonald has been a key component to the Jayhawks’ pass defense, which ranks third nationally in passing yards

allowed per game (122.5) and second in team passing effi ciency defense (75.70).

TURNING THE TIDE ON DEFENSE

Kansas’ pass defense comparison to two-time defending National Champ Alabama didn’t last very long, but it wasn’t the

Jayhawks moving down the list. Kansas was runner-up a week ago in the national rankings for fewest passing yards allowed

per game and remained in the top fi ve while the Crimson Tide fell to No. 92. Kansas hasn’t faced a Heisman contender, but the

Jayhawks are a much improved unit and rank third at 122.5 yards per game, behind Michigan State (99.7) and Virginia Tech

(106.3). KU limited South Dakota to 67 yards through the air in the season-opener, the best passing defensive eff ort since

allowing just 66 yards passing to K-State on Nov. 7, 2009. Kansas’ pass defense continued to look sharp in game two as the

Jayhawks picked off two passes and combined for nine pass break-ups, while limiting Rice to 178 yards and no touchdown

passes. Last season, KU surrendered a program worst 289.2 passing yards per game and has allowed 220 yards per game or

more in each of the last nine seasons. Kansas’ largest, single-season improvement in pass defense was 85.4 yards from 1973 to

1974, a little more than half of the diff erence (166.7) from last year to the current tally through two games.

FEAR THE BEARD

Ben Heeney’s career-best 18 tackles against Rice helped push the junior up the Big 12 and national tackling charts. Heeney’s 11.0

tackles per game are tied for the Big 12 lead and rank tied for 12th nationally. The 18 tackles were the most since current Denver

Broncos linebacker Steven Johnson recorded 18 tackles against Texas Oct. 29, 2011, and earned Heeney honorable mention

among linebackers by the College Football Performance Awards on Monday. Heeney, KU’s top returning tackler and 2013 Rotary

Lombardi Award watch list member, burst onto the scene in 2012 with 112 tackles in his fi rst season as a starter for the Jayhawks.

His tally included 66 solo stops and he led KU with 12.0 tackles-for-loss with one sack. Heeney earned second team All-Big 12

honors following the 2012 season from the conference coaches, the Associated Press and Phil Steele Magazine. He was listed

as a preseason fi rst team All-Big 12 member entering the 2013 season by Athlon, Lindy’s and The Sporting News. Additionally,

Heeney was named to the College Football Performance Awards watch list for the top linebacker in the NCAA.

DEVELOPING A PASS RUSH

Kansas has recorded back-to-back games with three sacks and reaching back to the fi nal game of 2012, the team has logged

three sacks in three consecutive games. That number ties the team’s single game high from the last two seasons. Linebacker

Ben Heeney has a sack in each of the fi rst two games and Buck Michael Reynolds got to the quarterback twice against Rice. The

last time KU recorded three or more sacks in consecutive games was the end of the 2010 season when KU sacked Missouri four

times, then opened the 2011 campaign with three sacks against McNeese State. The last time it happened in the same season was

2009, during a three-game stretch to open the season against Northern Colorado (3 sacks), UTEP (6 sacks), and Duke (5 sacks).

EXTENDED RANGE

The Jayhawks have received some much needed relief in the area of special teams with the emergence of redshirt freshman

kicker Matthew Wyman and junior college transfer punter Trevor Pardula. Wyman nailed a 45-yard fi eld goal in the season

opener - the longest by a Jayhawk kicker since Jacob Branstetter’s 46-yard make at Kansas State on Nov. 7, 2009. Pardula, who

serves as KU’s kickoff specialist, has six touchbacks through two games and needs just one more to match last season’s entire

total. Pardula booted a career-best 59-yard punt against Rice and ranks ninth in the nation in punting at 45.7 yards per punt.

THE SIMS

KU senior running back James Sims had an outstanding 2012 season as he ranked fi rst in the Big 12 and 17th in the NCAA in

rushing yards per game. Sims also ranked third in the Big 12 and 33rd in the NCAA in all-purpose yards. Sims rushed for 100 yards

or more in six games last season. After missing the fi rst three games of the 2012 campaign, Sims eclipsed the 100-yard rushing

mark in six-of-seven outings vs. Big 12 foes. In 2012, Sims recorded a career long rush of 64 yards (vs. Texas), a career-long

reception of 51 yards (vs. Oklahoma) and a career-long TD run of 59 yards (vs. Baylor). Additionally, he logged his career-best

rushing game with 176 yards vs. Texas. Last weekend, Sims notched his 12th career 100-yard rushing eff ort at Rice to tie Jon

Cornish on KU’s career 100-yard games list and moved past Gale Sayers and John Riggins into fi fth on the Kansas career rushing

totals chart. With two touchdowns this season, Sims also moved into second on the KU career rushing touchdowns list. Here’s a

THE SIMS 2

Kansas running back James Sims became the 11th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 yard mark in a season during

the 2012 campaign, needing just eight games to get there. The 1,000-yard plateau has been reached a total of 13 times, including

two 1,000+ eff orts by Tony Sands (1989, ‘91) and June Henley (1993, ‘96). This year, Sims will look to join that exclusive two-man

club and become the fi rst Jayhawk to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. Sims’ total rushing yardage last season

(1,013) was the 13th-best, single-season eff ort and his 112.6 yards per game ranked as the fi fth-best per game mark in KU history.

THE SIMS 3

James Sims dominated Big 12 defenses on the ground last season. Sims led all Big 12 players in conference-only games with 115.2

yards per game. He carried the ball 200 times for 922 yards and seven touchdowns.

YOU MEAN WE CAN WIN WITHOUT A 100-YARD RUSHER?

One seemingly necessary requirement in KU’s six wins from 2010-12 was a 100-yard rusher, namely James Sims. Sims topped the century

mark in every KU win he played in during his fi rst three seasons - fi ve of the six total, missing only the 2012 season opening win during which

teammates Tony Pierson and Taylor Cox eached rushed for more than 100 yards. Sims’ 94 yards and two touchdowns might be the equivalent

of a 28-point, nine-rebound performance in basketball - not quite a double-double, or 100 yards in this case, but close enough to have the

same aff ect as the statistical plateau. Kansas also rushed for 280 yards as a unit in the win over South Dakota, but statistically speaking, was

able to win for the fi rst time in four years without having Sims, or any other Jayhawk, run for 100 yards.

RUSHING HIGHLIGHTS JAYHAWK OFFENSE IN 2012

Behind a stable of top-notch runners, the KU rushing attack fi nished the 2012 season ranked 22nd in the NCAA. Led by the Big

12’s top rusher in James Sims, Kansas averaged 211.6 yards per game on the ground, third in the Big 12 to Baylor (231.69) and

Oklahoma State (215.31). Sims turned in 112.5 yards per game, 17th in the nation, while Tony Pierson added 69.1 ypg and Taylor

Cox 38.7 ypg.

RUNNER’S DELIGHT

Kansas was one of four schools in the NCAA that had three diff erent running backs eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark in a game

in 2012. Jayhawk running back James Sims recorded six 100-yard games, HB Tony Pierson had three 100-yard games, while

fellow HB Taylor Cox had one 100-yard rushing game to his credit last season. All three Jayhawks are back in the lineup in 2013,

along with junior Brandon Bourbon and redshirt sophomore Darrian Miller, who each have recorded 100-yard games in their

careers, giving Kansas arguably one of the top stable of runners in the NCAA this season.

DYNAMIC DUO

KU’s backfi eld duo of James Sims and Tony Pierson return in 2013 as one of the top tandems in college football. In a compilation

of the top returning pairs from 2012, Sims and Pierson ranked fi fth in the nation when combining their rushing and receiving

yards. In the list compiled, no one person in the tandem could take over 75 percent of the total touches between the two last

season. Sims and Pierson combined for 2,232 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns (1773 rushing, 459 receiving).

The top fi ve tandems entering the season are as follows:

Kent State (Archur/Durham) 3,487 (2,745 rushing/742 receiving)

Tulsa (Watts/Douglas) 2,394 (2,044 rushing/350 receiving)

Syracuse (Smith/Gulley) 2,366 (2,001 rushing/365 receiving)

Georgia (Gurley/Marshall) 2,352 (2,144 rushing/208 receiving)

Kansas (Sims/Pierson) 2,232 (1,733 rushing/459 receiving)

100 X 10

KU HBs Tony Pierson and James Sims each eclipsed the 100 yard rushing barrier in Kansas’ game at Texas Tech on Nov. 10,

giving KU 10 such performances on the 2012 season. The 10 100-yard performances matched the school record set in 1974.

Against Texas Tech, Kansas had two 100-yard rushers in the same game for the fi rst time since the South Dakota State game

when Pierson and Taylor Cox both gained 100-plus yards.

200-100

Jayhawk HBs Tony Pierson and James Sims teamed up for a 200-100 combination on the ground with Pierson going for 202

yards and Sims collecting 127 yards at Texas Tech in 2012. The 200-100 feat has only been accomplished one other time in KU

history as Dennis Wright (113), Norris Banks (120) and LaVerne Smith (236) turned in a 200-100-100 outing vs. Missouri in 1975.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Junior Jake Heaps won his Kansas debut, becoming the seventh Jayhawk QB to lead his team to victory in 16 total debuts since

2000. Previous Jayhawk quarterbacks to win their debut in the last 12 years include Dayne Crist (2012), Jordan Webb (2011),

Todd Reesing (2007), Kerry Meier (2006), Brian Luke (2004) and Zach Dyer (2001).

TEAM CAPTAINS

Junior quarterback Jake Heaps, junior linebacker Ben Heeney, senior running back James Sims and junior defensive lineman

Keon Stowers were selected by their peers as the 2013 team captains, while nine other players were appointed as members

of the team leadership council. Kansas conducted a players vote on August 18 during fall camp and head coach Charlie Weis

announced the results at his weekly press conference on August 19. Members of the newly created leadership council include

Jimmay Mundine, Christian Matthews, Tony Pierson, Pat Lewandowski, Keba Agostinho, Cassius Sendish, Dexter Linton, Darius

Willis and Blake Jablonski.

REWARDED FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS

Kansas head coach Charlie Weis awarded three scholarships to walk-on players in the fall based on their continued contributions

to the program. Weis granted junior halfback Connor Embree a scholarship on August 15 and announced that junior holder/

quarterback Blake Jablonski would receive a scholarship during practice on August 16. For the second consecutive year, Weis

also extended a scholarship to senior defensive lineman Shane Smith. Embree, a Superior, Colo., native, who attended Blue

Valley West High School in Kansas City, has been a member of the team for two years after transferring to KU from UNLV.

Jablonksi, a graduate of Wichita Collegiate High School, was the Jayhawks’ holder in all 12 games a year ago and has been a

member of the team for three seasons. Smith, from Albuquerque, N.M., played in all 12 games last season.

PATIENTLY WAITING

The Kansas Jayhawks will again feature one of the most talented scout team off enses in the country with quarterback transfer

T.J. Millweard (UCLA) and wide receiver transfer Nick Harwell (Miami (Ohio)) sitting out due to NCAA transfer residency

requirements. KU starters Jake Heaps and Justin McCay built repoire and tortured the fi rst team defense while running the scout

team last season. Millweard was slated to be the back-up in Westwood after redshirting as a freshman in 2012. The former top-

100 Texas recruit from Colleyville, Texas, will be a redshirt sophomore in 2014 and have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Harwell, a 2011 Biletnikoff Award Watch List member and All-MAC First Team selection, brings an impressive resume to Kansas

with 229 career receptions, 3,166 yards and 23 receiving touchdowns over three seasons with the Redhawks. The Missouri City,

Texas native will have one year of eligibility remaining for next season.

Charlie Weis arrived at the

University of Kansas on December

9, 2011, armed with an impressive

legacy of success at the highest

level of collegiate and professional

football. He has his sights set on

engineering the eff ort to turn

the KU program into a consistent

winner.

The 34-year coaching veteran coached 16 years in the NFL

and assisted two of the greatest coaches in NFL history - Bill

Parcells and Bill Belichick. Weis owns four Super Bowl rings

and has played an integral role for teams that have appeared

in six AFC Championship Games. As a head coach, the 2005

National College Coach of the Year led Notre Dame to back-

to-back BCS Bowl Games in 2005 (Fiesta) and 2006 (Sugar).

Weis spent the 2011 season as the off ensive coordinator

and quarterbacks coach at the University of Florida. In 2010

he was the Kansas City Chiefs’ off ensive coordinator, helping

guide the team to the AFC West title, its fi rst 10-win season

since 2005 and its fi rst playoff berth in four years.

Weis previously served as off ensive coordinator for the

NFL’s New England Patriots (2000-04) and N.Y. Jets (1998-

99). He was instrumental in the development of Patriots

quarterback Tom Brady, who entered the league as a sixth-

round pick in 2000 and has since become a two-time Super

Bowl MVP and fi ve-time Pro Bowl selection.

Weis demonstrated his ability to tutor quarterbacks with

the Fighting Irish as well. Brady Quinn (3,919 yards in 2005)

and Jimmy Clausen (3,722 yards in 2009) put up the two

most prolifi c passing seasons in Notre Dame history. Wide

receiver Golden Tate also established eye-popping numbers

under Weis, setting a Notre Dame record with 2,707 career

receiving yards and taking home the 2009 Biletnikoff Award

as the top receiver in the country. Tate also set single-season

school records in 2009 with 93 receptions and 1,496 yards and

a school record-tying 15 touchdown grabs.

During Weis’ fi ve-year stay with the Patriots – from 2000-

04 – the club won three Super Bowls in a four-year span, only

the second team in NFL history to accomplish that feat. New

England was 53-27 (.663) during Weis’ tenure and had a 9-0

playoff record.

Over Tom Brady’s fi rst four seasons as a starter in the

NFL (2001-04), he ranked fourth in the NFL with 97 passing

touchdowns and earned Super Bowl MVP honors in two of

New England’s three championship victories, while wide

receiver Deion Branch earned the other. The Patriots produced

two-straight 14-2 seasons – in 2003 and 2004 – each capped

by Super Bowl victories. New England rushed for 2,134 yards

in 2004, the team’s highest total since 1985.

In Weis’ fi rst stint with the Patriots, he helped the club earn

its second AFC Championship in team history, reaching the

Super Bowl following the 1996 season. Over the four years

of his fi rst tour with New England, Weis coached tight ends

(1993-94), running backs (1995) and wide receivers (1996),

helping players like Ben Coates, Curtis Martin and Terry Glenn

emerge as playmakers.

The Trenton, N.J., native spent three seasons (1997-99) on

staff with the New York Jets, working under head coach Bill

Parcells. Weis came on staff as the wide receivers coach and

was promoted to off ensive coordinator in 1998. That season,

the Jets advanced to the AFC Championship Game for the

fi rst time since 1982.

Weis fi rst broke into the NFL as an assistant on Parcells’

New York Giants staff , fi rst as a defensive/special teams

assistant in 1990, then moving to running backs coach in 1991

and 1992. In his fi rst season with the team, the Giants won

the Super Bowl. He then helped Rodney Hampton to a pair of

1,000-yard rushing seasons.

Weis spent time working in the Giants’ pro personnel

department in 1989 before joining the team on a full-time

basis. While doing that, he served as head coach at Franklin

Township (N.J.) High School and led the team to the state

championship.

From 1985-88, Weis worked as an assistant at South

Carolina. He began his coaching career at Boonton (N.J.) High

School in 1979 before serving fi ve seasons at Morristown (N.J.)

High School (1980-84).

In 2003, Weis and his wife Maura created the Hannah and

Friends Foundation, a non-profi t organization dedicated to

improving the quality of life for children and adults with special

needs. The foundation funds Hannah’s Helping Hands, which

provides quality-of-life grants to families across the country

who care for children and adults with special needs. The Weis

family opened the Hannah and Friends Neighborhood, a 40-

acre facility north of South Bend, Ind., that provides much-

needed housing and care services for adults with special

needs.

Weis is the author of a 2006 autobiography (written

with Vic Carucci) titled “No Excuses: One Man’s Incredible

Rise Through the NFL to Head Coach of Notre Dame.” His

wife, Maura, is author of a 2008 book (written with Jessica

Trobaugh Temple) titled “Miles from the Sideline”--a journey

with the Weis’ special needs daughter.

In the spring of 2008, Weis traveled to the Middle East as

part of a contingent of college football coaches who were

visiting military personnel stationed in the region.

Charlie and Maura Weis have two children, Charles Joseph

and Hannah Margaret. Charlie, Jr., recently completed his

sophomore year at KU, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. Now

entering his junior campaign at Kansas, he is also serving as

a student manager-off ensive assistant, working closely with

assistant coaches Reggie Mitchell and Ron Powlus and the

Jayhawk running backs and quarterbacks.

JAYHAWKS RUN PAST COYOTES 1SOUTH DAKOTA (1-1) 14

KANSAS (1-0) 31

Memorial Stadium/Kivisto Field • Lawrence, Kan.Sept. 7, 2013 • Attendance: 41,920

Kansas scored 24 unanswered points to erase an early seven-point defi cit and topped

South Dakota, 31-14, in the Jayhawks’ season-opener at Memorial Stadium.

Kansas rushed for 280 yards, including a game-high 94 yards and two touchdowns from

James Sims, to claim their ninth win in the last 10 season opening contests, including two

straight under Weis. Overall, KU is 89-31-4 when opening the season at home.

Weis called upon fi ve diff erent running backs in the fi rst win of the season. After Sims,

Darrian Miller rushed for the second most yards after collecting 86 rushing yards on 14

carries in his fi rst game as a Jayhawk since 2011. Tony Pierson (47) and Taylor Cox (44) also

contributed to the Kansas rushing attack.

South Dakota struck fi rst taking a 7-0 lead after quarterback Josh Vander Maten threw a

two-yard pass to Drew Potter near the end of the fi rst quarter, but didn’t score again until

the junior signal caller punched it in from nine yards out in the fourth quarter.

In the 39:54 between scores, the Jayhawks tallied four scores, including Sims’ two runs,

Justin McCay’s fi rst career touchdown pass from Jake Heaps, and a 45-yard fi eld goal from

Matthew Wyman – the longest by a Jayhawk since 2009.

In his KU debut, Heaps was 10-for-20 with 110 yards and the TD strike to McCay, his partner

on KU’s scout team a season ago. His longest throw of the night was a 25-yard connection

with Pierson, who ended the game with two catches for team-best 32 yards.

The Jayhawks added one more touchdown in the fourth quarter as Brandon Bourbon

scampered in from three yards to put KU ahead 31-14 with 5:59 left to play.

KU’s defense was strong on opening night as the secondary limited the Coyotes to 67

yards passing – the lowest opposing team total since holding Kansas State to 66 yards

on Nov. 7, 2009. Victor Simmons led the team with eight tackles in his fi rst career start,

Ben Goodman logged a sack on the Coyotes fi rst play from scrimmage and Keon Stowers

logged his fi rst career interception in the fi rst half.

Connor Embree, who earned a scholarship during fall camp, stole the show on special

teams averaging 23.5 yards a return. His longest of the night was a 32-yard return. Wyman,

in his fi rst game as a Jayhawk, made 3-of-3 PATs and connected from 45-yards, the

longest KU made fi eld goal since Jacob Branstetter kicked a 46-yarder against K-State

on Nov. 7, 2009.

BOSWELL KICKS OWLS TO VICTORY OVER KANSAS 2KANSAS (1-1) 14

RICE (1-1) 23

Rice Stadium • Houston, TexasSept. 14, 2013 • Attendance: 22,974

Rice scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead 56-yard fi eld goal by Chris Boswell and a rushing touchdown by Charles Ross – the only off ensive touchdown given up by Kansas in the game – to rally past the Jayhawks, 23-14, at Rice Stadium.

KU’s defense held Rice out of the end zone for three quarters and picked off a pair of passes in the second half, but for the second year in a row Boswell’s leg provided the diff erence. The Rice senior also connected on fi eld goals of 40 and 28 yards, helping the Owls keep the Jayhawks winless on the road since 2009.

Ben Heeney led the Kansas defense with a career-best 18 tackles and Isaiah Johnson and Dexter McDonald both pulled in their fi rst career interceptions in the loss. Johnson’s interception set-up a short fi eld for Kansas late in the third quarter and allowed quarterback Jake Heaps to maneuver the Jayhawks on a go-ahead scoring drive.

Kansas led 14-13 after Heaps completed a desperate, third-and-12 pass to Tre’ Parmalee, then punched it in himself on a one-yard sneak.

KU’s defense held tight through the opening minutes of the fourth quarter and stopped just inside Kansas territory with a little more than eight minutes to play, but it was close enough for Boswell to knock through his 12th career fi eld goal from longer than 50 yards and give the Owls the lead again. Ross, who fi nished the game with a career-high 157 yards rushing, made it a two-score game and eff ectively put the game out of reach with an eight-yard scamper with 3:28 to play.

Kansas was outscored 9-0 in the fourth quarter in Lawrence last season and Boswell booted a 45-yarder as time expired to lift the Owls to a 25-24 win.

The Jayhawks seemed to be battling the four-year, road hex from the outset, forcing a Rice punt on the opening drive of the game before a tipped Heaps pass turned into six points the other way. Rice linebacker Michael Kutzler tipped a Heaps attempt into the air, tracked it into his hands and rumbled 52 yards for the fi rst score of the game.

The Jayhawks were held scoreless in the fi rst quarter for the second consecutive game, but broke through with a tying tally in the second period. Heaps hit Tony Pierson, who scurried 77-yards for KU’s longest pass play since 2007 with 9:20 to play in the fi rst half. Pierson fi nished the game with a career-best 95 yards on four catches.

Boswell kicked his fi rst two fi eld goals before halftime and the Owls entered the break with a 13-7 advantage.
