FROM YOUR PASTOR…..
This Sunday we will have a special Christmas Eve service during our
normal time of worship. The Choir will be singing a few songs from the
Carols and Classics program, and we will also have a special time of
communion. We encourage everyone to come and bring their families.
Because of the holiday, our service will be a little less formal than usual.
We also will not have Sunday school, but classes are welcome to meet
informally if they would like. I hope that this will be a great time for us
to treasure Christ together. Our sermon will be from Philippians 2:5-11
and we will look at why Jesus came. At Christmas we celebrate the mys-
tery of the incarnation. In Christ, God himself entered our world and
took on human flesh for the sake of our salvation.
It has been a joy to celebrate this season with you! I cannot think of a
better time of year to begin preaching at a new Church. I hope that in this
season you and your family have been able to step away from all the hur-
ry, to slow down and to reflect on Christ. I love these words from Chris-
tina Rossetti’s Hymn In the Bleak Midwinter, “What can I give Him, poor
as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise
Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.”
Grace and Peace,
Jeff
Women on Mission Projects
Throughout the month of December Women on Mission will be collecting new and gently used socks and gloves for
Western Heights Baptist Center. All sizes are needed, (children through adults), to be given to the cold and homeless who visit the Center. Please leave your donations in the bin marked 'Western Heights Donations' located in the Welcome Center.
Our Church Goal — $14,000 Collected to Date — $11,892
We have almost achieved our goal! Thank you, Smithwood, for your continuing generosity to missions!
The church office will be closed from Thursday, December 21st through Monday, January 1st. We will reopen on Tuesday, January 2nd. Alt-hough the office will be closed between Christ-mas and New Year’s, year-end tithes may be mailed to the church and will be credited to your 2017 charitable giving report. Please be sure to date your check 2017.
“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:17 (NIV)
Do you feel like something is missing when you come to church? Are you just attending service and then returning home? Are you missing out on the fellowship that comes in serving Christ with others? Serving in a min-istry or support ministry connects you with other church members. You need not commit to a weekly ministry. There are several opportunities that are monthly or just occasionally. Listed below are some of the ways that you can serve at Smithwood:
Readers: read Scripture during morning worship. Readers are given the Scripture by Thursday, so there is time to familiarize yourself with the reading. Van Drivers: drive the church van to pick up our members who are una-ble to drive. Many of our faithful widows depend on the van to get them to church on Sunday mornings. You must have a clean driving record. Nursery Workers: minister to our littlest ones during Sunday school and morning worship. You must pass a background check. Office Volunteers: answer phones and greet visitors when the secretary is out of the office due to illness or time off.
For more information about any of the above, contact the church office!
The church office will be closed on Thurs-
day, December 21st through the first of
the year. We will resume regular office
hours on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.
Sunday, December 24th Morning Worship at 10:45 AM
Join us as we celebrate in worship with preaching
from the Word, singing of Carols, special music,
and Christmas communion.
This will be our only service on December 24th.
