Dear Members,

Once again I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the officers and committee to wish you all a healthy and prosperous New Year with much success during 2016.

I was sorry to receive a telephone call from Pam Wheeler to explain that after giving the matter a great deal of thought that she was unable to continue as our Patron as she feels that she could no longer support the society as she would like to by not being able to get to shows as she finds driving more difficult.

I am pleased that Sue Wilkinson (Hurwyn) has accepted our invitation to be our new Patron. Sue is extremely well known in the world of dogs especially English Setters and Pointers. I would be very surprised if you could not find some of Sue s breeding in your pedigrees and I challenge you to prove me wrong – no prizes by the way!

Again MESS continued to hold three shows during 2015 with our championship show held inFebruary and open shows in May and November. I am pleased to report that our entry for all three shows were very good and that we will continue to hold three shows as this not only gives something back to our members but also supports up and coming judges to progress through the judging lists, however, I would encourage all aspiring judges to attend the modules as we find it more difficult to select judges for our Open Shows due to the shortage of names especially from the “B” list.

We are pleased to let you know that we have some very experienced judges for our 2016 shows. As you will already know for our Championship Show we have Frank Kane judging Bitches and Gordon Hayburn judging Dogs; Referee is Linda Harris and Anne Derry judging the Stakes classes. The May show on the 15th May 2016 is to be judged by Jane Mugford and Eddy DeVille is judging the stakes classes. The November Show on the 20th November 2016 and our judge is Jan Armstrong. Given that 2016 is an Olympic year our Shows have an international theme with judges from England, Canada, Wales, Belgium and Scotland. It will be no surprise that Lraffle will also have an Olympic theme.

We organised along with Steve Collier a Module 2 in April 2015 which I feel was a resounding success. Once again please support the work of the Joint Judges committee by updating your

self forward for future modules that you are eligible to attend. (Send updates to Steve Collier).

It goes without saying that I would like to thank Frank Kane, Gordon Hayburn, Linda Harris and Anne Derry for agreeing to judge at our 34th Championship Show and hope they enjoy their day with us. To all exhibitors good luck and please give a cheer to all those who win and placed in their class.

Regards

Rod Green

Judges Profiles

Dogs:GordonHayburn (Radclyfehall)I was first introduced to this beautiful breed when I met my (now late) partner, David Ingham in 1986. There is a sponsored class at the NESS Open show in David’s memory. His family owned a “Brucelm” dog and I couldn’t believe how affectionate the breed was. I knew then we would have to have our own ES one day. In 1990 this came true when we got Rupert (Wynacre Blizzard). He was followed in 1994 by Gilbert ( Briartor Tropical Rain). In addition to the ES, we had Hamish (Golden Retriever) and then in January 1997, just a couple of months after David passed I got Declan (Irish Red & White Setter). I also owned a Labrador but she stayed with a friend of mine as I didn’t want a bitch in a house with 4 males! I was a committee member of both the ESS of Scotland and the ESS of Wales when I lived in the respective countries.I first judged ES in 1996 at South of England Gundog Club and awarded CCs for the first time in 2011. This appointment will be my 3rd time awarding CCs in English Setters. I am also passed by the UK Kennel Club to award CCs in Irish Red & White Setters. I moved to Canada to live and work in 2011 and am licensed by the CKC to judge the entire Sporting (Gundog) Group.I consider it a great honour to judge our breed and would like to extend my thanks to the society for this prestigious invitation and look forward to an enjoyable day amoungst beautiful dogs and the people they own.

Bitches:FrankKane (Hirontower)Frank showed his first dog, a Cocker Spaniel, whilst still at school and he has been involved in the dog world ever since. Whilst at university he made up two Sealyham Terriers in partnership. During his university holidays he worked at a famous Dachshund and Cocker kennel in Germany who had an English Setter, SUNTOP SNOW FLAIR. Frank showed her in Holland and Germany winning several groups with her and winning Best of Breed at the Bundessieger Show. After university he bought two foundation bitches for his American Cocker breeding; one became a champion in the UK and both produced champions. In all 13 UK champions were produced including three group winners, with other CC winners and champions overseas. He also won CCs in Cocker Spaniels with his late partner Pamela Gibson.Frank first awarded Challenge Certificates in 1974 and is now approved to award Challenge Certificates in 110 breeds and judges all groups and Best in Show at Championship show level. He judged Best in Show at Crufts in 2012.Frank is Chairman of the Breed Standards committee and Dog Health Group at the Kennel Club and a member of the General Committee. He is a frequent contributor to the canine press and a member of the Crufts television commentary team.Outside his canine interests Frank is a keen horseman and occasionally judges horses and ponies with a particular interest in hunters, hacks and children's riding ponies.

Referee: LindaHarrisIt all began in the early 60s when I worked as a Kennel Maid for a large commercial kennel in the Midlands. I was allowed to show young Alsatians (GSD now) at local shows but my interest in English Setters did not follow until 1979 after I had attended a local Championship Show. I fell in love with them although I seem to recall after meeting Peter Upton (Tragus) he may well have had something to do with it!A short time later I purchased 'Scratchwood Miss Belinda' with whom I did some nice winning and learnt a great deal from the experience. Later I served on the committee for Coventry Gundog and Bromsgrove & District Canine Society. Over the following years I have owned and shown both sexes and to date have made up seven champions.During the eighties I showed German Shorthaired Pointers for the late Alf Gossage (Moorpool) and have owned, in partnership, Pointers from the famous 'Hurwyn' kennel.I have judged several times since my first appointment to award Challenge Certificates at the National Gundog Association Championship Show in 1996 including an appointment to judge in Finland where it was very cold but extremely enjoyable! In 2015 I had the honour to judge English Setters at Crufts.MESS is a modern and forward thinking Society of which I have served on the committee for several years now and so it was with great pleasure I accepted their invitation to Referee the 2016 Championship Show.Have a good day with your dogs and remember the ES slogan 'A Gentleman by Nature'.

Special Memorial Awards:MrsAnneDerry (Balvenie)I got my first Setter, an Irish Red and White, in 1986 and he was quickly followed by an English. I had not bought them to show, but was persuaded to give it a try. I got BOB at my first show in 1989 and was hooked! I have been showing ever since and have been fortunate enough to gain CCs and RCCs along the way, as well as making up an English and a Dutch Show Champion. I have been judging for several years, including breed club Open Shows and am delighted to have been asked to judge the Memorial Stakes Classes at MESS Championship Show 2016.

the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.

• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.

• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all. • The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water

available to drink. • Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog. • When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle. • Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of water

available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated. • Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths

of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to

dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare.
