Historic Overview
Paul Roos Gymnasium vs Paarl Gimnasium
Boland towns Paarl and Stellenbosch will once again do battle on Saturday 16 May when Paul Roos hosts Paarl Gim in
their annual Interschools rugby derby.
Paarl Gim are eager to avenge the loss they suffered on home turf last year, especially as it's Paul Roos’ 150th year and
they were recently crowned Sanix World School Rugby champions in Japan.
These two schools share a long and rich history in rugby and the first recorded time Old Boys of the two schools played
together for SA was in 1906, when the Springboks played Ireland in Belfast. That day Steve Joubert was the first of many
Gimmies to represent his country - and his Bok captain was Paul Roos himself.
In a reverse for 2015, current Springbok captain Jean de Villiers is an old Gimmie, while Paul Roos’ latest Springbok,
Willie le Roux, is also in the side.
Recent Results
Results over the last six years are even, with Paul Roos and Paarl Gim having won three apiece. Home advantage had
little influence over the last two years, with Paarl Gim beating the hosts at their Markotter fields in 2013 and Paul Roos
returning the favour last year.

2015 Season
In their 150th
year celebration, Paul Roos are under constant pressure to perform well. So far they have not disappointed
and have won all of their full matches, only going down to Rondebosch in a 20 minute each way friendly with no kicking
for points allowed at Newlands.
They have toured to Japan to represent South Africa at the Sanix Youth World Rugby Championship and after six
matches on a tight schedule they returned as holders of the gold medal.
Coach Hein Kriek is a proud man after good wins over Affies, Jeppe, Monument and Grey High PE. Next, however, is the
competitive Western Cape Schools league and if they can survive matches against Paarl Gim, Paarl Boys, Rondebosch,
Boland Landbou and bogey team Bishops, they will truly have had a great season.

In stark contrast to Paul Roos, Paarl Gimnasium has been moving under the radar to quietly go about their winning ways.
They had people sit up and take notice, though, with their demolition job of Pietersburg at the Paul Roos 150th
festival
day.
They then wrapped up wins against Menlopark and Garsfontein in the North-South tournament before surprisingly
going down to Bishops at the Piley Rees. A mixed bag followed at the Wildeklawer tournament where they had a good
win against HTS Middelburg before drawing with Affies on the last day.

Their biggest rivals is Paarl Boys High based in southern Paarl. Their annual showdown has the unofficial title of “Biggest
Interschools” in South Africa.
In 2012, while still at school, captain and pivot Handre Pollard represented South Africa at the U-20 World Cup with
aplomb. Called up for the injured Johan Goosen, Pollard played a vital role in SA winning the final against New Zealand.
He again represented the U-20s in 2013 and captained the side in 2014. The young man is currently plying his trade with
the Blue Bulls Super15 team and, in 2014, he became Paarl Gim’s 20th Springbok.

Rugby at Paul Roos
The words Paul Roos and rugby are synonymous. The great man was the originator of the famous Springbok emblem
and name for the South African national team. He is seen by many as the father of South African rugby and it is fitting
that the school that carries his name is such a powerhouse.
Paul Roos has to date produced the most South African players to represent their country on a rugby field, with Juandre
Kruger becoming their 50th
when he faced England at Kings Park on June 9 2012. Their latest Springbok is fullback Willie
Le Roux, who earned his test cap against Italy in June 2013.
