1. Hibernation:
Long winter sleep in some animals is known as hibernation. Example – bear.
2. Migration:
Large scale movement in some animals from one place to another in search of food, favourable
climate and to reproduce. Example – Siberian crane

The animals which can live both on land as well as in water are amphibians. Example – frog,
toad
4. Aerial:
The animals which fly in air and spend most of their time in air are called aerial animals.

5. Arboreal :
Animals which spend most of their time on trees are called are called arboreal. Example –

6. Scavengers:
Animals that feed on dead and decaying animals are called scavengers. Example – Vulture.
7. Parasite :
The animals that depend completely on other animals for their food are called parasites.
Example – leeches, lice.

The process in which animals merge with their surroundings is called camouflage. Example –
Tigers have stripes on their bodies to camouflage in tall grass.

Ans. Area in the desert where underground water is available is known as an oasis.

c) What are sand dunes? How are they formed?
Ans. Small hills of sand formed by blowing winds are known as sand dunes. The hot and dry winds
which blow during the daytime, carry large amounts of sand with them, it results in the formation of
sand dunes.
d) Which parts of India does the Western Desert cover?
Ans.The western desert is located to the west of the northern plains. It covers most parts of Rajasthan.
-It lies to the west of the Aravalli hills, extending from the Rann of Kachchh in Gujarat to the borders

Ans.Some important cities of Rajasthan are Jaipur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. This region has a
number of beautiful forts and palaces that attract a large number of tourists every year.

a) Camels are reared in the desert for many things. Can you name some of their uses?
Ans. The camel is a very useful animal in the desert. Some of the features that make camels ideally
suited to living in a desert are:
- A camel can bear the extreme temperatures in the desert.
-It can survive without food or water for several days. A camel’s hump is used to store food.
-It can also work easily on sand, because of its large, padded feet.
- The camel is an important means of transportation in the desert. That is why it is also known as the
ship of the desert.
-Camels are also reared for their milk.
-The hair of camel is used to make clothes while their skin is used to make tents.
b) Few people live in the desert. Why?
Ans. The life of the people in a desert is very difficult. The water is not easily available in the desert
and villagers have to walk long distances to get water.
-The dry and sandy soil also makes it difficult to grow crops. Because of the hard living conditions,
fewer people live in the desert as compared to the plains.
c) In the desert in summer, days are quite hot while nights are cool. How?
Ans. The climate in the western desert is extreme and quite harsh. During summers, days are very hot
while nights are cool.
-This is because during the day sand gets heated up by the sun. As soon as the sun sets, the sand cools
down.
- In winters, days are warm while the nights are very cold.
