Message from Chaichan Opanayikul, Product Management, SEA & Country Manager, ThailandSchaeff er has started the year where we left off , by building on our
strengths to deliver products that our customers need.
In this issue, we feature the FAG Black Series, which was developed in
response to the high demand for radial insert ball bearings and housing
units based on the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS). The new Black
Series ball bearing units are highly reliable, easy to mount and runs
silently. They complement the ISO-compliant INA X-life range in the
premium segment.
We have shared much about the perils of using fake bearings in previous
issues. Such warnings and information are now available in the new
“Warning: Counterfeit!” brochure. Read about how counterfeit products
are destroyed in an environmentally friendly way.
The Bangkok location has achieved the prestigious Schaeffl er Technology
Center status, as did the Vadodara location in India. The foundation
stone for a new Schaeffl er plant was laid in Chon Buri province in Thailand
on February 6.
Happy reading!
“FAG Black Series” is our response to the ever-increasing demand for radial insert ball
bearings and housing units in accordance with the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS).
In this way Schaeffler complements its range of ISO-compliant INA X-life products in the
premium segment.
Why offer extra JIS products, isn’t it sufficient to have ISO housing units?
No, it’s not as simple as that because:
• the lubrication holes of radial insert ball bearings and housings are in different positions
• the fixing holes in the housings are in different positions and have different diameters
• the housing shapes and dimensions differ
• depending on the tensioning system (ISO with locking collar or JIS with grub screws)
and the surface quality of the shaft, the designs can support different axial loads
Conclusion: It is not possible to directly replace JIS with ISO products and vice-versa when
it comes to the aftermarket business. This is why we’re expanding our product portfolio
and thus the range of products you can offer.

Durotect® B –
it’s all in the coatingThe Durotect® B coating not only gives our housing units their characteristic black color,
it also lends them a truly unique feature as standard: The formation of rust is inhibited,
which in turn increases the reliability of the housing unit.

Product range is growing rapidlySchaeffler currently offers housing designs for its FAG Black Series. The range of
corresponding radial insert ball bearings spans from bore code 04 through 18. In addition
to the tensioning system with grub screws (UC), the production of radial insert ball
bearings with adapter sleeves (UK) . These will be available on the
market before the end of this year.

RSR seal – more than just reliableThe outer flinger shield and the RSR seal form a strong team and provide reliable pro-
tection against the ingress of contamination. Firmly staked in the outer ring, the seal
makes relubrication easy. There is no risk of the seal being pushed out of the bearing
by excessive amounts of grease. And contrary to many other radial insert ball bearings,
this lip seal does not contain any harmful DBP plasticizers.
So there! “Quiet running bearings run longer.”A benchmark test has shown that FAG Black Series bearings run more quietly than con-
ventional JIS radial insert ball bearings. This is due to their optimized geometry, high
ball quality, and honed raceway surfaces. Naturally they are manufactured to the same
high technology and quality standards as Schaeffler’s INA X-life radial insert bearings.
It goes without saying that this also has a positive effect on the bearings’ operating life.

Our Bangkok, Thailand location has
been awarded certifi cation as a
Schaeffl er Technology Center (STC),
making it part of the prestigious
Schaeffl er Global Technology Network.
STCs are local centers of technical
expertise in the regions, staff ed with
highly qualifi ed engineers capable of
providing a defi ned range of services
and the same high standard of
customer support all over the world.
The title is awarded only after a com-
prehensive audit that these demands
are being met.
Strong teamSchaeffl er sales engineers and
engineers in local STCs make a strong
team. In the regions, they bring
Schaeffl er engineering and service
knowledge even closer to customers
and enable technical issues to be
addressed in the best way within a
very short time.
Bangkok achieves Schaeffl er Technology Center status
Internal audits mean that the STC title represents a high standard of
quality in various areas of expertise relating to rolling bearings and
issues related to rolling bearings. Regular training courses,
workshops, and follow-up audits ensure that this is permanently
maintained.
Furthermore, our STCs are constantly exchanging information and
ideas with the worldwide networks of experts within the Global
Technology Network. If more in-depth specialist knowledge is needed,
these networks ensure highly qualifi ed support is provided quickly –
irrespective of where it is required.
Several customer projects confi rm the effi cacy of the collaboration
in the Schaeffl er Global Technology Network and the great benefi ts
it provides to Schaeffl er customers. The premium solutions developed by
7forum 1/2015
Schaeffl er are documented as Global
Technology Solutions. In addition to
the technical approach, the benefi t to
the customer – which in many cases
can be expressed in fi gures as a
defi nite saving – is also recorded.
In another development, India has
also achieved STC status for the
Vadodara manufacturing plant in
April, bringing the number of certifi ed
STCs to 27 globally. Vadodara
provides customers in India with
comprehensive technical support
and speedy advice of the highest
standard, even in the case of very
complex inquiries.
A complex conveyor system that transports 150,000 tons of ore per hour over a distance of eight
kilometers is at the heart of a large copper mine in the US. The customer’s plan was to increase the speed
of this system by 50 percent without altering the foundation or the base surface.
The challenge for Schaeffl er was to supply bearings that were suitable and that fi tted into the existing
housings, as well as withstanding the extreme conditions.
After making thorough calculations, an engineer from the STC in Danbury determined that the customer’s
requirements could be fulfi lled by upgrading to bearings in the new X-life version.
The planned start of production for the new version was moved forward by more than a year in
collaboration with the department responsible in Germany. This made it possible for the delivery date set
by the customer to be met.
In addition, a specialist in the STC in Oakville Canada developed a new special housing, which allowed a
weak point in the system that had previously led to frequent unplanned downtimes to be improved.
The Schaeffl er sales engineer presented the customer with this comprehensive solution with rolling
bearings and housings, which was specially designed to suit his requirements and led to a saving of
several million dollars, within a very short period of time.
The customer was able to achieve the desired performance increase without having to make expensive
major alterations to the system.
STC success story
We have now been keeping you regularly informed
of our activities in the fight against counterfeiting
for several years. This is – or was – unfortunately
restricted to isolated incidents or specialized
topics. For many customers and colleagues, the
overall context was often missing, i.e. an easy-
to-understand portrayal of the complex product
piracy problem from Schaeffler’s perspective –
from A for Authenticity, to P for Plagiarism,
through to Z for Zero Tolerance.
The Brand Protection Team has now put all
these topics together in its new “Warning:
Counterfeit!” brochure, which is designed as a
tool to help you in your day-to-day work. Please
use this to make everybody in your area aware
of our shared goal: Stop fake bearings!
The “Product and Trademark Piracy – (Not) a
Problem” flyer and WBA brochures / posters
that have already been published are of course
still available whenever you need them.

Six questions that “Warning: Counterfeit!” answers for you
• Are counterfeit rolling bearings also an issue on my market?
• What should I do if I suspect counterfeiting?
• If I have obtained / sold a counterfeit product, what will the cost be?
• How can I be on the safe side when purchasing from Schaeffler?
• How can I check whether a sales partner certificate is genuine?
• What is Schaeffler doing to combat product piracy?
The 12-page DIN A5 brochure is currently available in German,
English, Spanish, and Portuguese. A copy is also included in this
issue of forum. You can also request additional brochures at any
time, free of charge – just ask your contact person at Schaeffler.

What happens to counterfeit products once they have been
seized? There is no easy answer to this question, because the reg-
ulations vary from country to country – and sometimes even from
region to region. This means that some counterfeit products are
seized on the orders of the brand proprietor but are then returned
to their country of origin. In any case, brand manufacturers are
anxious to destroy the counterfeit products or to damage them to
such an extent that they cannot end up back on the market and
cause harm. This often entails a large outlay – the mere cost of
storing the goods prior to their destruction can amount to thou-
sands for every batch that is seized. Add to that the destruction
process itself, which is often complicated and can take hours –
even days – and require a lot of manpower.
In other regions, it might still be years before the necessary envi-
ronmental awareness and infrastructure for controlled destruc-
tion procedures are in place. One example is the United Arab
Emirates, where counterfeit parts used to literally be “returned to
the soil”. There has now been a major shift here, and Schaeffler –
after campaigning in favor of environmentally friendly destruction
and sustainability – is among its leading figures. We have now
succeeded in having metal components melted down in this
region for the first time. This is a major advance and we will do
everything in our power to ensure that this example sets a prece-
dent – for the sake of the environment.
