1. Place the picture card on the table. “These are bees.”

2. Place the ‘bees’ card beside it. Point to the word ‘bees’ and say “bees”.

3. “Bees make a sound like this….[make a humming noise]”.

4. Place the ‘hum’ word card down, point to ‘hum’ and say “hum”.

Select the next picture and repeat the above procedure. Repeat until all 6 pictures have been placed on the table.

Animals and Their Sounds

Prepare the cards: print, laminate and trim around each of the cards.

For Non-Readers

You will need to pair this work with picture cards of the animals. You won’t require all of them at once - select 6 at a time.

Below is a sample of how you can introduce this work to a non-reader - it requires adult assistance.

Use the Control Cards

1. Place the Control Card for the first animal below the picture and word cards and point to each word as your read it: “Bees will hum.”

2. If the child wishes, they too may point to the cards and repeat the name and sound each animal makes.

3. Repeat this for each of the Control Cards

Animals and Their Sounds

Prepare the cards: print, laminate and trim around each of the cards.

For Readers - You do not have to use all of the cards for the presentation of the lesson, you can select 6 to 12 Animals, Sounds, and Control Cards.

1. Show the child how to place the Animal Card and the Sound Card at the top of the table.

2. Keep the cards separate by color, but shuffle each set of cards so that they are not in alphabetical order.

3. Read each animal card and place it below the Animal Card which is at the top of the table.

4. Place the Sound Card beside the Animal Card at the top of the table.

5. Show the child how they will read a Sound Card, find the correct animal that makes that sound and match the cards together.

6. Read a Control Card and use it to make sure the Animal and Sound Cards have been matched correctly.

Once the child has been shown how to use this work they may select as many animals to work with as they like.
