Dear Members,

As many of you might know, 2015 has been a very difficult year for the club. After the resignation of the former Chairman and the rest of the management committee, the remaining members had the task of electing a new management committee and carry forward the responsibilities of the club. I would like to add that I believe the new management committee has done an excellent job under the circumstances thus far!

At the end of October, we successfully held the "Happy Hound Happening" which turned out to be a big success! Everyone on the committee worked really hard to ensure that this day was so successful.

Sadly, at the end of last year we lost our sponsorship with Complete, but we went out in search of new sponsors and have succeeded!! We have managed to secure sponsorship with a number of companies which includes: CHAMPION PET FOODS SOUTH AFRICA, MSD ANIMAL HEATLH AND PRO-PET. We want to thank these companies for agreeing to sponsor our club, and we

hope that these partnerships will carry forward into the future!

On the 6th of March we had our first Open Show under the new committee, and it was a huge success!! I want to thank each and every one who played a part in making this a fantastic day!!

As you will see from our financials our club is financially sound. We will carry on with various fundraisers throughout the year to build up our reserves.

We are looking forward to our Championship show which will be held in July, where we will have UK Judge Vivien Phillips presiding. We hope that this will attract us more entries, as our show entries have dropped drastically over the past two years. The committee

are considering other measures as well to improve entries in the future.

Our Scent hound for the year competition will carry on, but the rules have been revised and points will be collected only from Gauteng shows and not country wide.

Our membership numbers have dropped slightly and we have to look into acquiring more members this year.

I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks to the previous management committee, and all other officers of the club who have done such a great job over the years since the start of this club.

Finally, I would like to thank the committee for their support and hard work. It really is greatly appreciated, together we will make this club a success!!

BREED PROFILES: PBGV & GBGV by Lientjie Marais

HISTORY OF THE BREEDS

Originally there was only one size of BGV that nowadays would look like a mixture between a PBGV and GBGV. They appeared with the height of a Petit but with a long head, a long, heavy body and with mostly crooked or half-crooked front legs, looking like rough-coated Basset Hounds without the extra skin or wrinkle. It had been common practice to interbreed the Grand and the Petit, therefore it was not uncommon to find Grands in Petit litters and or at least significant characteristics. In theory this practice stopped in France in 1972 and was officially banned by the French club in 1977. Breeders today put great importance on size and type. It was the Comte Christian d'Elva who attempted to improve the soundness of these hounds. His hounds were taller and straight-legged and the forerunners of the Grand Basset of today. His famous dog "Royal Combattant" is a good example of the quality of his hounds at the turn of the century, where he won the Prix d'Honneur de la République. Beginning in the late 1890s and then flourishing in next century, the breed made enormous strides under the Dézamy family where the nature and type of the varieties

"Grand" and "Petit" were firmly defined and established. The name Dézamy (also Desamy) is virtually synonymous with BGVs in France, where the one family over three generations established the breed(s), formed the Club du Griffon Vendéen, wrote the definitive standards and continuously served as Presidents of the club from 1907 until 1985. At this time M. Renaud Buche took over the Presidency and in 2010 subsequently handed over the Presidency to M. Christian Oustrieres.

TREAT RECIPE’S

Homemade Dog Treats

Cook time 10 mins; Total time 10 mins

If you don't want to roll it out, just roll small pieces into a ball and press with a fork like peanut butter cookies. Your dog could care less if it's shaped like a bone or not. I added a couple of tablespoons of wet dog food just for extra flavour. Completely optional Ingredients

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup milk

3 tablespoons coconut oil Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 180°C 2. Combine all ingredients into

your mixing bowl, I used my electrical mixer, but a hand mixer works great too.

3. Mix on Medium until well blended.

4. Placing your dough on a floured surface, and knead.

5. Roll it out. Mine kept looking like it would crumble apart, so I didn't roll it out too thin.

6. Cut out your shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet. I poked holes with a fork in case they wanted to bubble, but mostly because it looked like I knew what I was doing. :)

7. Bake for 10 minutes. SOURCE: http://todayscreativelife.com/homemade-dog-treats/

SCENT HOUND CHAT ISSUE 1 | Issue 1 13

Beagle Welfare is a newly formed welfare

organisation with the aim of successfully re-homing beagles. We registered as an NPO and NPC in March and received both NPO and NPC numbers in April. We are extremely excited at getting these numbers as it opens up so many doors for our organisation. From getting corporate sponsorship to being a ‘My School Card’ beneficiary. All this allows us to give the best care and attention to our rescues, ensuring that money will never be a problem when it comes time to helping a beagle in need.

A bit about our directors, Antoinette, aka Toni, has done a lot for other rescues especially SPCA Sandton and all 6 of her dogs are Rescued. Shelley has been a full time foster mom for the past 2-3 years as well as running her own Hound Hotel for Beagles whose owners need to go away and can’t take their fur kids with them. Jenna has been involved in volunteering at Barking Mad and in the past 18 months working specifically with Beagles, from fostering to learning more about the breed and dog behaviour. All of our Directors have adopted beagles that have touched their hearts and changed their lives for the best.

The three of us all have one aim in mind, become a legal welfare organisation and do the very best we can for the beagles, from re-homing beagles to hosting educational talks and workshops. We all just want the best for the breed we are all so passionate about and we know there is only one way to do that, by

being open and honest about how we operate.

Recently we opened up our own bank account in Beagle Welfare’s name. We are in the process of applying for a Section 18A grant, which will allow people to get a tax

rebate on their taxes, this will also allow us to get corporate donations. We will post a quarterly treasurer’s report on our website, and members may request to see fund allocations at any point. We realise this sounds like a lot of extra work and it is, which is why we ask that people of our loving Beagle community join as a formal member of our organisation by completing our online membership form http://goo.gl/forms/idpkBYmU0c and do what you can to help this wonderful breed.

We are also proud that we have a website, http://beaglewelfare.yolasite.com, although this is more for information than advertising of beagles that need homes, it serves it purpose. We also have a Facebook Group ‘Beagle Welfare South Africa’ and a Twitter account @BeagleWelfareSA.

If anyone has any questions regarding our Organisation we urge you to ask and we will answer to the best of our ability. If you know of anyone wanting to adopt, please refer them to us. If you know of anyone that can no longer care for their Beagle, please refer them to us. We have already successfully rehomed two beagles, Tika and Katie, and assisted in a private re-homing of Bella. We are also wanting to work alongside Breeders in educating the public and if necessary assist in re-homing.

What we have already noticed is the best way to ensure a successful re-homing is building a relationship with all parties involved, from the owner/foster to the adopter. We try to ensure that all parties are comfortable with the procedure as this creates less stress on both humans and beagles.

Our beagles are adopted at a small adoption fee of R1 000, this covers the cost of sterilisation, micro-chipping,

vaccination, de-worming and tick and flea prevention. Our Beagles also go with a bag of Food, sponsored by Hills, to the new owner. We are also working on getting a medical aid scheme for our Beagles and more information will be posted on our Facebook Group once we have more details.

We can be contacted on our email address [email protected] or contact Jenna on 0840368096. We trust we can have your support in making a better life for all beagles in South Africa.

Canine Health Aging and Expected Changes in Older Dogs by Annemari Groenewald (parts taken from Pet Education)

We expect certain changes to occur in an

animal's body as the animal ages. These changes may not be the same in each dog. Older dogs can experience many changes in the functions of their bodies. Some dogs may have more pronounced changes than others, and in some dogs, the changes may start to occur at a younger age. Knowing what changes to expect can help you and your dog adjust to them when and if they do come. There are many ways we can help the older dog adapt to these changes. You will need to monitor your older dog more closely. Do not disregard a change in your dog's activity or behavior as 'just being old age.' Many of the changes can also be signs of a more serious disease. If you are in doubt, consult your veterinarian and be sure to discuss with her/him any concerns you have about your older dog during his regular physical exam. Change in nutritional needs and weight changes: As dogs age, their metabolism changes and their need for calories decreases. In general, their maintenance energy requirement decreases by about 20%. Because their activity usually decreases as well, their energy needs are decreased by another 10-20%. If we feed older dogs the same amount we fed them when they were young, they will gain weight. As the body's metabolism changes, it is more common for the body to lay down fat. This tendency can also contribute to obesity in older dogs. Obesity is one of the main health problems of older dogs. In addition to calories, there are other nutritional needs of older dogs, including an increase in fiber and a decrease in fat. Especially if an older dog is not eating as he should, or has certain medical conditions, Skin and hair coat changes: As with people, older dogs may start to show gray hair; this most commonly occurs on the muzzle and around the eyes. The coat may become thinner and duller, however, this can also be a sign of disease or nutritional deficiency. Fatty acid supplements may help restore some of the luster to the coat. If the coat of an older dog changes significantly, the dog should be checked by a veterinarian. Older dogs may need to be groomed more often, with special attention given to the anal area. Some older dogs develop multiple benign

tumors of the skin, which are generally not removed unless easily traumatized. Cancerous tumors of the skin can also occur. Dry skin can be a problem for older dogs, and again, fatty acid supplements may be beneficial. Brittle nails and thickened foot pads: Just as we see changes in the coat, we can also see thickening of the foot pads and changes in the nails of older dogs. They may tend to become brittle. Care must be taken in clipping the nails of older dogs, and they may need to be clipped more often, since older inactive dogs are less likely to wear their nails down through activity. Decreased mobility and arthritis: Arthritis is a common occurrence in older dogs, especially large breed dogs and breeds which have a tendency to have intervertebral (IV) disc disease such as Dachshunds and Bassets. Dogs who injured joints earlier in their life also have a tendency to develop arthritis as they age. As in people, arthritis in dogs may only cause a slight stiffness, or it can become debilitating. Dogs may have difficulty going up and down stairs, jumping into the car, or walking through snow. Chondroitin and glucosamine can be beneficial to support healthy joints. Some anti-inflammatory pain relievers such as aspirin, Metacam or Deramaxx (note: I do NOT EVER recommend Rimadyl) are often recommended for dogs with arthritis. As with muscles in people (if you do not use them, you lose them), older dogs who are inactive will lose muscle mass and tone. This may make it more difficult for them to move, so they move less, etc., and a vicious cycle starts. Exercise for an older dog is important for the health of the muscles, as well as the heart, digestive system, and attitude. Exercise routines can be adapted according to the dog's abilities. Short walks a day may help maintain and strengthen the dog's muscles. Ramps, elevated feeders, and orthopedic beds may help a dog who has decreased mobility or pain on movement. Dental disease: Dental disease is the most common change we see in older dogs. Studies show that even by age three, 80 percent of dogs’ exhibit signs of gum disease. Routine dental care including brushing, can help keep dental disease to a minimum. Dogs who have not received proper dental care can develop significant dental disease as they age and may develop life-threatening complications. A dental care program should consist of tooth brushing, regular dental checkups, and professional cleaning as needed.

The Stormwind kennels of Pieter and Martie

Muller was established in the mid-sixties

(1965).

Although basset hounds were known in the “Transvaal” in 1924 and a farmer in the Cape had basset hounds in 1932 they only made their first appearance in the show ring in the late 1950s. At first all basset hounds in the show ring were from England. Pieter and Martie’s first basset hound originated from English lines as well.

Martie in the show ring, showing her love for her dogs.

Soon after they started showing they saw the need to improve the breed in South Africa and imported several basset hounds from the United States, Australia and Canada and more recently from Czech Republic. These imports would lay a

Martie with CH Tidalwaves Geoffrey of Stormwind.

perfect foundation for the outstanding Stormwind Basset hounds.

Pieter and Martie were leaders in the basset hound show group. For many years they also ran the Basset hound club organising Open Shows and fun days at their lovely home in Alberton. Unfortunately, this club were never able to grow to a club with Championship status and later on- after Pieter fell ill – the club became dormant.

The Stormwind Basset hounds have been consistent winners through the years with nine Dogmor Qualifiers since 1978 at 1987. Consistent winners at that stage was CH Branscombe Neptune of Stormwind (US import) and CH Branscombe Frederick of Stormwind (US import).

CH Branscombe Neptune of Stormwind ranked nr 56 all breeds in 1987. (Heads and Tails Top Hundred). He also made an enormous impact on the breed by producing many champions for Stormwind Basset hounds. The unique blend of US and Australian lines became the style of the Stormwind kennels. Stormwwind Basset hounds were very well known for their

mahogany bassets. The also exported a mahogany male to the Netherlands.

Many Stormwind hounds did extremely well in the show ring like CH Stormwind Fredsfirst, CH Stormwind Costabaie, CH Stormwind Thesaint, CH Stormwind Evalovin, CH Stormwind Redsilk, CH Stormwind Je Taime, CH Stormwind Sugar and Spice to name but only a few. There were many other champions that were consistent winners.

Pieter and Martie did not breed many litters during the years, a fact which made their lines much more sought after. The last Stormwind litter was born in 1998 and two males of this litter made a big impact on the breed namely CH Stormwind Kalamaika and CH Stormwind Oscar of Tidalwaves. Stormwind Oscar ranked nr 93 all breeds in the Animal Talk rankings in the late 90s.

Later after the passing of Pieter, Martie kept on showing. Martie showed CH Tidalwaves Deacon of Stormwind

Martie with CH Stormwind Kalamaika.

(Euakanuba World Challenge Qualifier) and CH Tidalwaves Geophrey of Stormwind both to National Breed Champions. CH Tidalwaves Geophrey of Stormwind was also the breed leader (Show Dogs system) for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Martie was up to end of last year, still showing and actively involved at the age of 82. Currently she is recuperating after having hip replacement surgery. We hope to see her in the show ring again once she has fully recovered.

Kennels that directly benefitted from Stormwind lines was Bonheur, Brittania, Tamarika, Tidalwaves and Stromwave.

Martie is also a qualified Hound Judge and studied Music at TUKS, and she is still giving music classes, but her Basset hounds is still her number one love!
