resources To maximize benefits and minimize risks Fisheries education should be subjected to innovations and
reforms Prepare graduates and equip them
ELIGIBILITY Fisheries education and research is conducted by
ICAR and SAU’s Admission in B. F. Sc.: after 10+2 having PCB
group Based on merit/competitive examinations Special quota for outside state candidates through
ICAR examination. Degree course involves Practical experience;
hands on Training & in plant Trainingt.
GROWTH OF FISHERIES EDUCATION IN INDIA

SPECIALIZATIONS Areas should be uniform
across the country Restructured curricula and
syllabi with more emphasis on hands-on-training
Need to upgrade knowledge of the faculty
Emerging areas:
Physiology Microbiology Medicine and
Pharmacology Fisheies Biotechnology Ocean science.
LOWER EDUCATION IN FISHERIES
Need of skilled human resource at subordinate level: Hatchery Operator, Farm Asstt., Water & soil analyst,
Diplomas related to Fisheries can be a solution.
First Fisheries Polytechnic was inaugurated at Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, (AP)
Next at Ratnagiri (MS), Orissa
• Fishery Polytechnic
• Marine Engineering• Fish Pathology• Fishing Technology• Fish Processing • Seed Production
LINKAGES BETWEEN COLLEGES 22 Colleges and several teachers in these institutions are
involved An opportunity to share information both at national and
international level for teaching and innovative research Information technology can make linkages possible Learning from each other’s experience would serve as a big
boost
CHANGING SCENARIO- JOB SEEKERS TO JOB PROVIDERS
An acute shortage of graduates to meet the needs of growth Graduates from various Colleges have been absorbed largely in
various Government sectors of the country Declining job opportunities in the Government and private
sectors, graduates are finding new ways Market opportunity studies are essential to support graduates
to venture into self-employment Some have already ventured into self-employment and they
have been reasonably successful
INDUSTRY-COLLEGE LINKAGE
Entering into self-employment requires not only adequate skills, but also some knowledge of business and management
Call for examination of existing facilities in various institutions creating opportunities
Knowledge available in each of the institutions
OPPORTUNITIES FOR FISHERIES GRADUATES

CONSTRAINTS AND CONCLUSIONS Fisheries education being a state subject Colleges
depend largely on state finance. Coordination in fisheries education. Learning from each-others experiences being one of the
best options. Establishment of Fisheries Education Consortium or
Fisheries Council of India may be a good platform to streamline Fisheries education.
