Our schools were designed to produce a workforce required by 19th-century factories. The desired product was workers, who would behave identically, produce identical products and meekly follow orders. Collaboration and critical thinking was discouraged then, which is still being practiced in schools.

Compounding this problem has been the so-called ‘corporate’ schools that have bred and perpetuated a system of mediocrity based on rote-learning, devoid of the required LifeSkills to measure upto any eventuality with equanimity and confidence.

The mad rush of gullible parents for Ranks/Marks/Grades have been cleverly ‘encashed’ by commercially-oriented ‘corporate’ schools. The result is evident from an army of unemployable Technology and Management graduates of today, which has been revealed by numerous surveys/reports.

It’s essential to pick the right skills the right way at the right time !Workplace skill-set has three components: Cognitive Skills like basic numeracy and literacy (including digital literacy), as well as advanced problem-solving and creative / critical thinking skills; Social and Behavioral Skills like diligence, grit and openness to experience; and

which are job or occupation-specific .

Cognitive, social and emotional skill-formation starts from very early age and the window for building cognitive skills closes with late adolescence. In contrast, technical skills are acquired later from adolescence throughout adulthood and in colleges, universities and on the job.

All over the world, jobs are shifting from routine tasks, which are prone to automation, towards interactive tasks which require advanced cognitive, social and behavioral skills. These things become even more essential for those who wish to become independent professionals or entrepreneurs.

Technical Skills

Though we live in a digital world, soft skills like communication, problem solving, collaboration and empathy are now more valued than technology, says Paul Roehrig, Chief Strategy Officer, Cognizant Digital Business.

Roehrig, co-author of What To Do When Machines Do Everything: How to Get Ahead in a World of AI, Algorithms, Bots, and Big Data, believes soft skills haven’t diminished; they’re actually needed in larger quantities now. “As machines do more routine and lower value-add work, more people are needed to work in context of what Automation and AI cannot do,” he says.

When evaluating their hiring plans for 2017, 62% of employers rated soft skills as very important, according to CareerBuilder. Even a recent survey by the Wall Street Journal found that 89% of executives are having a difficult time finding people with these qualities. The scenario in India is even worse.

LifeSkills lead the way to a bright and secure future

Outdated Outlook: Irrelevant Curriculum

in the age of AI

Today’s technological revolution is entirely different from the industrial revolution and the pace of change is exponentially faster. Recent developments in robotics, artificial intelligence, big data, cognitive/cloud computing and machine learning have put us well on the way to a new age of automation. Activities that include cognitive capabilities once considered too difficult to automate successfully, such as making tacit judgments, sensing emotion or even driving is no longer beyond automation.

UNCERTAINTY LIES THE FUTURE

Slate - The School is a pioneer in holistic education and has been championing the cause of LifeSkills for its students. It has been well accepted and appreciated by parents over the last 18 years. It is validated by the presence of 11,000+ students across 7 campuses in 3 cities (Tirupati, Vijayawada, Hyderabad) who believe in Slate’s Chairman and eminent educationist Mr. Vasireddy Amarnath’s futuristic vision.

Upto 800 million global workers will lose their jobs by 2030 and will be replaced by robotic automation, says a new report from McKinsey Global Institute based on a study of 46 countries and 800 occupations. It also says up to one-fifth of the global workforce will be affected.

Wages for highly educated people have gone up, because information technologies complement the creative, problem-solving and managerial capabilities they possess. But at the same time, technology has pushed many less-educated persons into the service sector, with lower pay and lesser job security. Now, where does this leave our children 10-20 years from now?

The Outcome of Automation

As part of its LifeSkills-centric holistic learning, Slate has identified important ‘Basic Skills’ and key ‘Futuristic Skills’ . Deploying its signature curriculum through fine-tuned methodologies and specifically trained teachers of the rank of Vice-Principal, it’s been imparting these skills successfully to its students.

All other teachers are also trained to inculcate skills like Spirit of Enquiry, Critical Observation, Questioning and Critical Understanding / Thinking. Children are discouraged to ‘memorise’ or rote learn, but are encouraged to think, understand and explore. This exercise happens as daily routine and hence becomes part of a student’s personality.

Even in developed countries, while there is still a discussion happening on how to inculcate the futuristic skills among school students and on how to
