TSH/RVHS and CommunityGroups, Sept. 30, 2013 by RenateCrizzle

I attended another roundtablediscussion on behalf of CARPwhich was organized by TheScarborough (TSH) andCentenary (RVHS) hospitalsand to which service clubs, ratepayers and

neighbourhood organizations were invited. Again, the hospitalswere looking for input from the discussion participants. Theywere interested in feedback on perceived benefits/risks of amerger, how risks could be resolved, and how the hospitalscould work together to improve patient care and accessibility.

One thing that was emphasized was that change wascoming, no matter what. There will be no increase to theirfunding, but costs will continue to go up, so change isinevitable. The question is whether a merger would providean opportunity to mitigate the funding issue. It is moredifficult for a small hospital to attract patients and getfunding. By merging they would become the 7th largesthospital in Ontario and would have the largest number of ERvisits. This would lead to increased funding. Being biggermeans being stronger, and rather than competing againsteach other, the hospitals would work together. Anadvantage is that TSH and RVHS share the same focus andsimilar services, so a partnership would have a betterchance of success. Not all mergers are successful. Butboth TSH and RVHS have experience with previous mergersso could draw on that experience. There is an expectationto realize savings in administrative costs. Money saved inadministration will be plowed back into improving clinicalservices. One tricky point is site location.

An example of a positive effect that would result from amerger was given by the facilitator. Right now if you have astroke you are taken by ambulance to a downtown teachinghospital . They do your assessment and give youmedication, and then you are taken back to Scarborough. But this could be done in Scarborough if we had enoughneurologists. Merging would create a larger pool ofneurology experts, so stroke care and medicating could beprovided right here in Scarborough.

A concern was raised by a community member that all theefforts expanded on a possible merger may distract hospitalstaff from attending to their job duties. Another point raisedby a community member was the involvement of ethniccommunities in the information gathering/ disseminationprocess as Scarborough is a diverse multicultural area. Thefacilitator confirmed that communications are delivered inEnglish, Tamil and Chinese thus covering 90% of thepopulation.

There is a really informative website at

www.leadingforpatients.ca which gives a lot of useful andinteresting information. Click on the “New Updates” menuand you can read the comments made by the staff workinggroups. You might learn many new things. I found the“Primary Care/Family Physician Roundtable-Scarborough”section very enlightening. Do you know the relationshipbetween your family doctor and the hospitals? How manyhurdles does your doctor have to jump to get you into ahospital? You learn it there.

One thing I found really interesting was the language usedwhen talking about the changes to the funding model and itsconsequences. There were words like “competition”, “clients”,“market share”, “marketing strategy”, “volume increase”,“efficiencies”, etc., cold hard business terminology. Who wouldthink of a government run operation when hearing thosebusiness phrases? But competition has been introducedamong hospitals due to the ”Follow the Patient Funding”model. In order for hospitals to get money - they have to attractpatients. Without patients – no money. In order to attractpatients – they have to provide good service and achieve a goodreputation, otherwise patients will go somewhere else, forinstance to down town hospitals. So, what I am wondering Isthis: is this new “Follow the Patient” funding formula a formulathat will improve patient care? What do you think? Send your

opinion to [email protected]

Volunteering & Older Adults by BethMorgan

There are many reasonsthat volunteering is oftensuggested as a usefulactivity for older adults.Volunteering providessignificant physical, emotional & cognitive orhealth benefits. It alsoenhances social support, social inclusion & civicengagement.

Reginald “Reg” Pascoe has been a member at theScarborough YMCA since 1989, having joined prior to theactual building opening; he registered for a membershipwhile a trailer was parked at the perimeter of a constructionsite. Health reasons prompted him to make the decision tolead a more active lifestyle.

In the early days he volunteered intermittently for SpecialEvents like picnics and fun runs. In September 2003 at 67years of age Reg decided to volunteer regularly helping inthe Conditioning Room 3 to 4 days a week cleaningequipment, refilling spray bottles, replacing towels but mostimportantly, as volunteer ambassador prompting members,or their children to volunteer at the YMCA themselves. Hehas been called the singing volunteer, since he sings to,jokes, and laughs with YMCA staff & members, as he goesabout doing his volunteer work.

In the 10 years since he has been volunteering, life has

thrown Reg quite a number of curveballs from cancer, diabetes, heart problems & 2 spinal surgeries. Reg believesthat the YMCA & volunteering saved his life. Despite all ofthese obstacles, Reg has bounced back time and timeagain. The friendships and connections he has made, especially as he volunteers, have been invaluable to him. When Reg is away whether unexpectedly or a plannedmedical procedure, members and staff call and even visithim at home. Reg says this saves him from being alone andgetting into a different kind of trouble. The laughter and joy ofinteracting with regulars and getting to meet and know newfolks that come to the facility always gives Reg the incentiveto resume volunteering.

These days Reg may have cut back on the days he comes. He still makes it a point to try and come at least 2 to 3days a week. When he is here he can be found singingaway and joking with most everyone he meets at the YMCA.

The Scarborough YMCA currently works with over 400Volunteers in a variety of different roles. Volunteers come tolearn a new language, a new skill, meet new people andbecome involved in their community. This is whyVolunteering is at the core of our Mission – offeringopportunities for personal growth, community involvementand Leadership.

Sandra Wright

Just in case you are still“sitting on the fence” aboutwhether to stay or move orhave some qualms aboutleaving your current home, let me give you anotherperspective on this issue.Although I’m sure you’veread and heard over and overabout the value of ‘aging in

place’ (remaining in the same home for as long as possible),there are just as many proponents for making a later-lifemove. Just as we change throughout our lives, our lifestyleand housing needs also change. Remember the houses yougrew up on with your parents and siblings? Remember yourdorm room, or the small apartment you shared with friends,or your first home after getting married? Just as those livingsituations fit you and your lifestyle in the past, your currenthousing situation should be a good fit for where you are nowin your life. Different spaces really do fit different phases.Moving later on life should take you to a simplified settingwith less responsibility, more available support andassistance, and opportunities for interaction with others. Why? Because these factors will contribute to your overallfunctioning and well- being as you continue to age and canhelp prolong your independence. Plus, your new simplifiedlifestyle will give you the freedom to do more of what youenjoy so you can live each day to the fullest~ along withtime to focus on successful aging so you can make themost of this phase in your life.

Why do so many people want to age in place? Studiesshow that the biggest factor is difficulty letting go andmoving on, but denial, fear, depression, grief, basicresistance to change and emotional attachment also mayhave roles in this. Yes, letting go of a long time home andmoving can be stressful. It can even have negative effects onsome older adults. But hanging on too long often leads to alife of loneliness and isolation ~ things that are even moredetrimental to positive health and successful aging.

Housing that no longer fits, accumulated belongings, andoutdated roles and responsibilities can become too heavy forus as we age and will start bringing us down if we don’trelease them and let go. Proactively making a later life movecan be one of the most valuable gifts you can give yourselfbecause it will much better enable you to retain control ofyour life going forward. In other words, growing and changingwith your aging will help you keep step with your life. And bywelcoming in continued growth and change, you are alsoopening the door to living and aging fully and successfully. This is often enough to convince many older adults of thevalue of letting go and moving on in their later years. Don’tforget that actively choosing to make this move can also bea wonderful gift for your family. So many families tell us how

relieved they are that their parents made their own decisionsabout moving and how they wanted to live out the remainingyears of their lives. “My parents gave me a tremendous giftby relieving my siblings and I the responsibility and burdenof making important but very tough decisions for them later.”

Last but not least, if autonomy and freedom are important toyou, moving to a smaller more appropriate and supportivesetting for this phase of life can help prolong your ability tofunction independently because you’ll be in a better positionto adapt to the changes that lie ahead. Studies show thatpeople are less stressed and are more energized after theirmoves once the weight of this decision and their houses isoff their shoulders, and those who make this proactivedecision continue to thrive and function well for years, engaging in life and enjoying their new network of friends.

Canada Pension Plan by Susan Eng

Dear Chapter Chairs,

The politicians are playingpolitics with our future and it hasto stop. The Canada PensionPlan needs to be increased andeverybody knows it but for somereason the politicians are not

getting the message. The provincial finance ministers aremeeting this weekend. The premiers are meeting in mid-November and the crucial federal-provincial [FTP] financeministers will meet in mid-December.

Politicians need to hear from CARP members directly – thatyou fully support and understand the need for the CPPenhancement and that you want them to act now to providea better retirement future – not for you but for your childrenand grandchildren.

Here’s the email list of finance ministers and premiers andthe federal finance minister -http://www.carp.ca/evoice/ministers-of-health-and-finance/.

You can use CARP’s e-Voice, write a letter or visit theconstituency offices of your local elected representatives. Iurge you to share this message with your local chaptermembers.

If you accept the fact that Canadians are not saving enoughfor their retirement and need a better vehicle with which todo so then the settled opinion is that increasing the CPP isthe best way to do that. All the other options have beentried.

The aim here is to put enough money away so that once thepaycheques stop, by choice or not, the invested savingshave earned sufficient money to allow you to draw enough tolive on and preferably to maintain your standard of living.Research shows that a sizeable number of Canadians willface a significant decline in their standard of living becausethey are not saving enough. But also because theirinvestments are not making enough returns – especially nowin the low interest rate environment.

Dollar for dollar, you can't buy a retirement pension anymore cheaply than purchasing additional units of the CPP, ifyou could, unless you're lucky enough to belong to a definedbenefit plan at your workplace. Two-thirds of workingCanadians don’t have any workplace pension plan. The CPPor any large defined benefit plan is able to generate enoughinvestment income to pay your lifetime pension benefits. Infact, it is not your contributions that pay for these benefitsbut the investment income which pays 80% of thosebenefits.

So why has a simple retirement investment option becomeso political? Primarily because you can't have it unless thepoliticians agree to amend the CPP. And that takes 2/3 ofthe provinces with 2/3 of the Canadian population plus thefederal government. It happens that there is now aconsensus of enough of the provinces necessary to fulfillthat formula but for some reason, the federal governmenthas refused to consent and just won’t budge – despite thefact it was federal finance minister Flaherty who proudlymade the commitment in June 2010 for a modestenhancement to the CPP.

In fact, Alberta is the only major province that refuses to joinin the consensus but there are enough other provincesagreeing that Alberta’s vote is not needed. Minister Flahertyhas been relying on Alberta’s refusal to provide him withpolitical cover – so that he could argue that he needsunanimous consent even though the law does not require it.

Word is that his office was in a panic when Ontario PremierKathleen Wynne headed off to Alberta last week saying thatshe would encourage her Alberta counterpart to join in theconsensus. Luckily for the federal government - but notlucky for Canadians hoping for a better retirement - PremierRedford toed the line and said no change to CPP wasneeded.

So here we are on the eve of yet another federal provincialfinance ministers meeting where the result will depend onwhether politics or common sense will prevail. To help makepolitics align with common sense, it’s time to tell yourfederal and provincial politicians that they should act now toimprove the CPP.

If not now, When?

Sincerely,

Susan Eng

Elderly Abuse/Bullying - DianneOjar-Ali

While pondering what towrite this month, I askedmy son the question and hesaid to me, “Write aboutelder abuse- you know thecommercial where thegrandchild bullies his

grandmother and takes her wallet; takes out the cash andverbally abuses her?” I thought, perfect and the more Ithought about it, the more I realized that this is a huge butrarely discussed topic. Thanks Keeron.I am not here to scare you. However, I would like you toopen your eyes and be aware of your surroundings. Fairenough? Agreed!

Do you believe that someone will willingly want to tell thattheir family member stole money from them or that they arebeing bullied or threatened? Many of our elderly loved onesmay not have the sharp memory they once had. They mayalso believe that helping a family member is the right thingto do. Let us look at the flip side: most family members“expect” us to support them, feed them and that they areentitled to “something.” Really? There can be mental, physical and emotional abuse and the sad part is- who areyou going to tell? They can even threaten you and thensuddenly you fear for your life.

Currently, seniors are the #1 targets for scams, for example;Nigerian Scams, Grandparent Scams, Western UnionScams (send money scam), and scams whereby fraudstersfrom other countries are contacting and literally threateningthem and their families.

What can you do? Simple things. Common sense as mymother used to say (and I can still hear her voice saying it).

Do not give out your financial worth.NEVER EVER give anyone on the phone any personalinformation about you or your family, such as whereyou/they work, live etc.

If you receive any strange calls, report it or tell someone; letit go to voice mail, screen your calls with caller ID.NEVER keep too much cash on you, do not keep yourwallet close to the telephone (easy to access and giveinformation out);Make sure that you have a Power of Attorney for medicaland financial issues and of course appoint an executor thatwould be someone you trust with your life.

The #1 tip is to place an alert at the bank so that if ever youbecome a victim and you have to withdraw funds over andbeyond your normal spending habits, the bank will questionit and there will be help. You do not have to live in fear! Youcan speak to someone you trust and it does not have to bea family member.

The most important thing that most people do not do, is to“ASK QUESTIONS!” of the folks who call you. Ask themquestions on the phone until you wear them out . Theymight even give up on you and hang up! Have fun askingcrazy questions and they might eventually leave you alone. It really can be fun- and if not fun, then at least empowering!

My message is; remember that you are not at fault. We areall human and it is better to speak and tell someone youtrust before….. People act on “EMOTIONS and not LOGIC!”There are several more tips in “Mrs. Fraud and You” and youcan contact me for the list.

Be safe and if you contact me anytime, it would be mypleasure to serve you.

Walking With Poles is Much MoreHealth Effective Than RegularWalking by Dr.Klaus Schwanbeck

Toronto, Oct. 17th 2013.Nordic Pole Walking is verypopular in Europe andgrowing fast around the

globe, helping to fight the epidemic of chronic diseases. An All-in-One walking exercise that everybody at any ageand fitness level can do.

For more than a decade European doctors, therapists andhealth insurance companies have discovered the superiorbenefits of this All-in-One activity. Walking with poles provides a cardiovascular and a full-bodymuscle training exercise.

Many scientific studies from around the world (Mayo Clinic,University clinics from Europe, Korea, Japan and Canada(McGill University) and others) have proven that Nordic PoleWalking shows substantially greater health benefits overregular walking.

Nordic Pole Walking prevents delays and improves mostepidemic chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes type2, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, neck andback pain, mental disturbances and many more.

The physiological effect is easy to understand: Regularwalking only involves leg muscles and this lowers thecardiovascular impact by 25%. The combination of moderatecardiovascular and full-body muscle training is a direct resultof the impact the poles have on the upper-body muscles, which correlates to improved fat burning, blood sugar burningand the overall metabolic “power”. The simple formula: “themore body muscles working (90% of all body muscles) – themore calories are burned and cardiovascular exercise (plus25%) increases”.

An example for “weight loss”: walking with poles burns30%-67% more calories over regular walking andsignificantly improves both physical and mental energysimultaneously.

In Northern Europe, up to 20% of the populations walk withpoles to improve their overall health and fitness. Germanhealth insurances companies pay for the cost of Nordic Pole

Walking training by government regulation. Nordic PoleWalking has become a massive health movement.

According to Health Canada, 71% of Canadians chosewalking as their preferred physical activity. Walking withpoles gives you 100% more over your regular walkingexercise.

Canadian doctors and therapists, who have heard about thesuperior benefits, are confidently recommending Nordic PoleWalking to their patients.

Life Is The Opening Act…Retirement Is The Main Event byDon Silverfox

If you’ve ever had a dream oran ambition this story is foryou.

If you’ve ever knownsomeone who lived a goodlife, but still felt that theydidn’t live their dream… this

may be the story to inspire them.

If you believe that being a senior means that you just needto find a comfortable rocking chair now and watch otherscarry on with their life… well think again, and read on.The main event is now starting.

In life, there are many who follow their destiny, there areothers who attribute success in life to fate, and there are fewwho chase their ambitions like a hungry dog with a bone.In our golden years we often reflect on our lives and passthese tales of life’s journey to our children and grandchildren

Page 13: Scarborough Carp November 2013 Newsletter

in hopes that they will become inspired and magically strivefor greatness and glory one day as well.

The truth is that stories are stories, but the real lesson ringsout loud when you set the example. As seniors we canmake these stories come to life.If we put our mind, soul and energy towards our goalsindeed we can be one of the most powerful influencers foreach other and for the youth today, without them evenknowing it.

Let’s take a moment I shared with my grandson, as anexample.

On September 14th I was awakened by a little voice saying,“Gampie, I want to be just like you when I grow up.” Youwant to have a full head of grey hair? “Noooo gampie, I wantto sing like you and entertain a crowd onstage when I’m 70.”

Almost all of his life, he has heard stories of me performingon-stage when I was his age, and how much I wanted torekindle my music career after putting it on hold to focus onmy first joy, my family.

This experience taught my grandson a life lesson ofperseverance, ambition and resiliency, and that as long asyou have a passion for something, pursue it. Follow yourambition in life. It is never too late.

My dreams of rekindling my musical career pale incomparison to the feeling of accomplishment I had after myconcert at the famous Queen’s Hall the day before, but still, there is no greater joy than to feel that you have set anexample for your loved ones.

My wish for you is that you may never give up on yourdreams, and can someday share an equivalent moment ofpride with your loved ones.

In the pursuit of our dreams, we must remember that life’schallenges are often speed bumps along the way.

I ALWAYS BELIEVED IN MYSELF AND MY ABILITY. INEVER GAVE UP ON ME.

Like most people my age, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, sciatica, back pains are partof my daily life, but I do what is necessary to live with what Ihave, and have been achieving my dream through all ofthese.

My grandson, 12 1/2 years old, is my sunshine and is ahuge motivator for me. He believes that I am a very goodsinger and a fantastic "Gampie". A great part of my drive isalso not letting him down..and showing him that hisgrandfather CAN do it.

As long as we keep focused on the end result, perseveretowards the end goal, and never lose faith in ourselves, wecan be sure that trying in it self is the first stage ofaccomplishment.

September 15th 2013 was a magical night for me as I finallyrealized my dream after more than 40 years, to produce andperform again for my countrymen in a concert at Queen’sHall, the premier Performing Arts venue in my birthplace ofTrinidad.

That night I received three offers to return for shows. I amnow negotiating with two different promoters for a show earlyin the year and one later in the year. There is an enquirycoming from Washington D.C. as and plans are afoot inToronto to do a concert.

My advice to the crowd while I was on stage in Trinidad gotfantastic reactions after the show mainly because I said thatI was almost 70 years of age.

Quote: "If there is something you have always wanted to doin your life and with your life and thought it was unattainable, just believe in yourself, never give up, age is no barrier andGO FOR IT".

Dreams can come true in the Golden Years.
