The truth about the VA IRRRL program is that it is not ascam – it is a real opportunity for people who have a VAloan to refinance into a lower rate (when lower rates areavailable) and save money on their mortgage. The IRRRLrefinance requires less documentation than when youoriginally got your VA loan, but it still requires a significantamount of documentation in order to complete therefinance process from your old loan into your new one.

So if the IRRRL program isn’t a scam, then why the letters?Well, the letters are really just marketing pieces sent by thelender who sent them in an effort to get you to call themabout the IRRRL program. Many Veterans will get thenotices and call – which sends a signal to the lender thatthe letters “work” and have a high enough response ratethat the lender keeps sending them out. It is possible that ifat some point, enough people complain about the letterbeing misleading – that one of the governmentorganizations that regulate the VA loan program willinvestigate the lender and possibly have them stop sendingit out.

What Are The Letters Then?

When it comes to the VA IRRRL program, there is one rule ofthumb I use to spot a scam: did you seek the information outor did the information seek you out? If you received a“notice”, “alert” or anything like that in the mail or email –chances are it is just a misleading advertisement from alender who wants you to call them. I suppose you could callthis a “scam” – but as stated above, the IRRRL program isn’t ascam – it’s real. What is a little grey area is the marketingefforts of some lenders in an effort to get their phone to ring.

So if you got a letter in the mail informing you of some kindof stimulus package or something about your VA loan – becareful and treat it as what it most likely is: a marketing piecefrom a lender.

The VA IRRRL is alsosometimes called the VA streamline refinance and theprogram can only be administered by VA approvedlenders. Not all lenders are VA approved.
