Lowther Park lies on the western edgeof the Lake District National Park in theborough of Copeland around 8km from

the coast at St Bees.

The plan is made up of four areas, Lowther Park, Uldale, Dent and Sillathwaite however for ease of

reference the plan is refered to as Lowther Park.

Lowther Park lies mostly outside of the Lake District National Park with only the small area known as Sillathwaite within

the Park boundary. However Lowther Parkis very visible from the National Park and

surrounding fells.

Index of Multiple Deprivation

The two maps presented on this page try and give a flavour of

the social and economic characteristics of the area around

Blengdale by presenting views from the UK Governments IMD 2004 dataset compiled from the most recent population census

IMD Score3.96 - 9.419.41 - 13.2813.28 - 18.6518.65 - 26.9426.94 - 37.5637.56 - 61.11

Population density0 - 0.10.1 - 22.1 - 33 - 1010.1 - 2525.1 - 75

This map shows the population density by parish and ward. The yellow highlight on the map indicators the top 15 areas of lowest population density in Cumbria. This shows that Lowther Park lies only 2 to 3km

from the population centres of Cleator Moor and Egremont. At the same tim the forest lies on the edge of an area of very low population

density which is reflected in the NationalParks "Quiet Western Valleys" designation

This map shows the level of deprivation as measured by the Office of the Deputy Prime MInister. This indicates that Lowther Park is on

the eastern edge of an area of high deprivation which stretchesalong the west coast of Cumbria.

The score is a summary of 7 aspects :- Income, Employment, Health, Education, Skills , Training, Barriers to Housing, Services,

Living Environment and Crime.

Improved bend enables timber haulage from Uldale to use Cold Fell entrance.

A review of the Enduro motorbike route is being carried out during early 2009, the outcome of which will be used to inform this plan.

At the request of the County Council the right of way is tobe realigned onto the forest road .

The timber haulage route takes the shortest route from the forest to the A5086 at Cleator Moor via Wath Brow Bridge. Whilst narrow the alternative route through Ennerdale Bridge is longer, affects more communities and is no wider. Plan Boundary

Increasing open habitats provide a wider range of opportuntities for wildlife and flora.

Developing mature seeding conifers as part of Continuous Covermanagement will be of benefit to Red Squirrels.

New native woodland providing new opportuntities for wildlife and flora.

Whilst not renowned for its wildlife or habitats Lowther Park is home to a range of speices including Deer,

Red Squirell, Badgers, Birds of Prey and smaller wildlife such as butterflies.

This map highlights work that has benefited Nature conservation over the last plan period and key habitats.

This plan ilustrates the range and distribution of soils and windhazard

class across Lowther Park.

Wind hazard class provides an objective measure of the stability of a forest on a site. The higher

the wind hazard class number the shorter and younger trees are

when the start suffereing significant windblow. Sites scoring 3 or under indicate areas where wind is not a significant factor in the management of a forest. Areas scoring 5 and over are very unlikely to be thinned and highly likely to suffer windblow

early in their rotation.

LandformAssessmentN

This plan illustrates the underlying landform of Lowther Park. The map

shows that Lowther Park lies ontwo sides of a valley and includes

a number of knolls.

Research suggests that we look at mountainous landscapes in a certain way. Our vision is naturally drawn to follow the concavities up onto

ridges and then our eyes follow the convexities back down again.

Forest design works best when felling and restocking boundaries do not cross these "lines of force" at right angles . The forest shouldflow up and down these lines to encourage, as against block, our

eyes from following theselandscape features.

AchievementsNThis map tries to illustrate the main achievements over the last 5 years

compared to the 2000 plan objectives.

The map shows that the majority of the felling and restocking work was

carried out in Uldale and Dent.

The harvesting in Sillathwaitehas been delayed due to lack of

progress in establishing a suitable new timber haulage route from the

forest to the Cold Fell road.

A suitable timber haulage route from Sillathwaite to the Cold Fell road is required.

Can some of the wettersoils be left as open habitatsfollowing felling.

Does the clearence of windblow from the 2005 storm change the future felling shapes.

Is the extent of the area managed under continuous cover suitable, can it be extended.
