Simplified cross section through atypical Ridgeway round barrowThese burial mounds were in use from around4000 years ago during the late Neolithic tomiddle Bronze Age period. Designs andconstruction methods varied, but typically aninitial burial was covered by a mound ofmaterial from the surrounding area. Themound was later used for subsequent burialsor cremations in pottery urns. The originalchalk covering would have stood out gleamingwhite against the surrounding landscape.
