Giovanni Battista Moroni is considered one of the great portraitists of 16th-century Italy. Published to accompany the first major exhibition devoted to the artist in the United States, this sumptuous volume celebrates the painter’s eye for exquisite detail in depicting his sitters’ interior and material worlds. In-depth studies of Moroni’s most arresting portraits, together with a selection of complementary objects – jewellery, textiles, armour and other luxury items – evoke the material world of the Renaissance society in which he moved. Thirty-seven entries and two illuminating essays provide new insight into the artist and his sitters and reveal Moroni’s creativity in translating their world into paint.

This provocative publication focuses on videos by contemporary artists and filmmakers that encourage scrutiny of contemporary textile production and distribution. Is it possible to protect workers’ rights and ensure safe working conditions while keeping up with consumer demands? Can design and technology offer sustainable solutions to the environmental effects of fast fashion? What role do art and popular culture have in raising consumer consciousness? These questions and more will spark conversations about issues such as the merits of the local and tailor-made versus the global mass production of fast fashion.

Featuring her newest work, The End, as well as major examples from throughout her career, this book offers a new examination of Chicago’s wide-ranging artistic expression and powerful voice.

MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

During a 19th century renovation of a confectioner’s shop in the town of Colmar, France, workers chanced upon a precious hoard of medieval jewelry and coins hidden in a wall. The cache – known as the Colmar Treasure – is thought to have been concealed by a Jewish family prior to the outbreak of the Plague in 1348, when Jews across the region were tragically scapegoated and put to violent death. This exquisite volume, published to accompany an exhibition at The Met Cloisters, examines their legacy through the lens of the Colmar treasure, shedding light on what it reveals about the work, homes, worship and values of its owners.

Natasha McEnroe is the Keeper of Medicine at the Science Museum; she was previously Director of the Florence Nightingale Museum.

Many cities around the world could claim to have a rich scientific history. However, between 1550 and 1800, London fostered its very own particular brand of scientific enquiry and practice. Science City explores London as a world-leading nexus of administration for ambitious scientific projects, as well as a place to obtain exceptional scientific equipment. The story of the city is richly illustrated with objects, artefacts and maps, many of which are from the Science Museum’s extraordinary collection. Science City is published to accompany a new gallery at the Science Museum, scheduled to open in the autumn of 2019.

In autumn 2019 a spectacular suite of new Medicine galleries is due to open at the Science Museum in London, representing the biggest and most ambitious project that the Museum has ever undertaken. This permanent exhibition will include the historic collection of Henry Wellcome, whose personal treasure trove has been on long-term loan to the Museum for over 40 years, as well as the Science Museum’s own medical holdings. Medicine: An Imperfect Science is formed of stand-alone but connected chapters, generously illustrated, within which a rich history of medicine collecting can be found.

A royal castle for nearly a thousand years, Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. An enduring symbol of the monarchy and of British history, Windsor Castle is also where The Queen spends most of her private weekends. This souvenir guide offers a history of this magnificent castle, from its foundation by William the Conqueror in the 11th century to its continuing role today, and reveals some of the extraordinary artworks within.

Also available in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese editions

Cardiff Castle is a major Roman, Norman and medieval survival, but what sets it apart is its extraordinary redevelopment during the 18th and 19th centuries, culminating in the fairytale gothic revival extravagances we see today. In this sumptuous illustrated study of the past 250 years of its history, the Castle’s curator celebrates this reinvention that was led by several generations of the wealthy Bute family. 18th-century building and landscape work by the renowned landscape designer ‘Capability’ Brown and the architect Henry Holland was followed by William Burges’ fantastical transformations in the 19th century, together creating what is now one of the most iconic and popular buildings in Wales.

A royal palace for over 500 years, Holyroodhouse is The Queen’s official Scottish residence. It has been home to Mary, Queen of Scots, and Bonnie Prince Charlie, as well as the setting for rebellion, murder and marriages that have changed the course of British history. This new guide tells the sometimes turbulent story of Holyroodhouse, while new photography offers a closer look at its interiors and some of the artworks on display.

£6.95 / $8.95Publication: October40 pages; pb228 x 152 mm (6 x 9 in.)978 1 78551 237 7

Susan Jenkins is Curator at Westminster Abbey.

St Albans contains one of the most extensive sets of medieval wall paintings to survive in any of the great English churches, ranging in date from the early 12th century to the Tudor period. These provide a unique picture of how the decoration of an abbey church would have functioned in the Middle Ages, as a material expression of a deeply Christian culture where the spaces in the church acted as sites for prayer and devotion. This authoritative and accessible study of the full range of paintings, written by art historian Dr M.A. Michael and illustrated with specially commissioned new photography, offers a detailed discussion of the individual images and sets them in their wider artistic context.

A fascinating exploration of the process of designing and making David Hockney’s Queen’s Window at Westminster Abbey, unveiled in October 2018. This is the first time Hockney has designed a work in stained glass, which he drew up on his trademark iPad. The artist chose to celebrate the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with his favourite emblem of Englishness, the hawthorn blossom of his native Yorkshire landscape. The commission was a collaboration between Westminster Abbey, the artist and Barley Studios in York, who made the stained glass.

ILLUSTRATED HISTORIES

Lions of the North: The Percys & Alnwick CastleA thousand years of historyRalph Percy, Duke of NorthumberlandWith a Foreword by Dan Snow

£20 / $29.95Publication: March176 pages; pb270 x 230 mm (9 x 10½ in.)978 1 78551 129 5

Ralph Percy, 12th Duke of Northumberland, was born in Alnwick Castle. A keen historian and photographer, Lions of the North fulfils his ambition to update, expand and illustrate his grandfather’s earlier history of the Percys and their castle.

Lions of the North tells, from a unique personal perspective, the stories of the Percy family and Alnwick Castle over a thousand years of British history. Generations of Percy barons, lords, earls and dukes played vital parts in great historical events, from the Norman Conquest to the two World Wars, and the castle, once battered by marauding armies, is now a major tourist attraction. The Duke has drawn on his unparalleled access to the Percy archives to paint this fascinating portrait of a British dynasty and its survival against the odds.

ILLUSTRATED HISTORIES

The Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment – these seismic developments in Western thought were not confined to Italy and her neighbours, but were paralleled across the vast and culturally diverse territory stretching from Vienna to Constantinople. Drawing on an array of sources, this ground-breaking study charts the development of Eastern European thought and its literary and artistic expression from the Middle Ages to the modern age. First published to great acclaim in Romania in 1991, this newly revised, updated and illustrated edition will be published as Timișoara prepares to receive visitors from across the world as European Capital of Culture in 2021, and at a time when the question of what it means to be European is being debated more than ever.

ILLUSTRATED HISTORIES

A European M

elting Pot

Banat is the place where Byzantium and Central Europe clashed giving birth to a unique and diverse geography, which has embraced the entire world, and which was also able to become the cradle of a fascinating history. From a social, economic and political point of view, the Banat region was a territory of experiments, social and liberal initiatives, humanistic aspirations and the desire of material striving.

Sometimes, this place belonged to individuals and communities who refused to obey the authorities or totalitarian regimes. Indeed, the Banat region has its own particularities and invoking its historical realities is essential to future projects of the region.... It is possible, but also necessary to establish a history of the Banat region from the perspective of the Romanians, Serbians, Hungarians,Austrian-Germans and Europeans at the same time.

There are many who would like to read about the history of the region, to discover new information, to discover the people, places and topics less known or unknown, to understand events and facts, to question and enquire about the relationship between past and present.

Beginning in the eighteenth century, this region (Banat) inhabited by Romanians, Serbs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Slovaks, Turks, and Armenians, developed a genuine transethnic East European civilization. As the great «turning plate» between Vienna and Constantinople, the Banat area redefined Europe itself as an intercrossing of multiple traditions, rather than a homogeneous cultural space. As Victor Neumann puts it, ”if not entirely a Mitteleuropa, [the Banat was] in any case a Kleineeuropa, synthesizing the civilizations of the East and West“.

(Marcel Cornis-Pope, Virginia Commonwealth University, 2002)
