ScaffoldHelping to support and maintain the world of origami

Origami USA Convention isComingEvery year there is a biginternational origami convention inNew York City hosted byOrigami USA (Formerly theFriends of The Origami Center ofAmerica). This is the largest suchconvention in North America andoffers an opportunity to sharesome truly great folding.

This year the conventionruns from Junenn throughJunemm. Although I first joinedthe organization more than adecade ago, this will be the firstyear that I will be able to attend. I do not know how manyScaffold readers will be there, butI am hoping to meet at least a fewof you.

Next months issue willprobably have a review of theconvention and links to otherreviews and picture galleries.

New BooksThis month I found a few moreold books in the onlinebookstores specializing in usedbooks. I also discovered a newitem at Kims Crane(www.kimscrane.com).HOW TO MAKE ORIGAMI byIsao Honda (No ISBN)(English)QQQ models.FUN-TIME PAPER FOLDINGby Elinor Tripato Massoglia (NoISBN)(English) 13 mostlytraditional models.CARTOON ORIGAMI by Halle(No ISBN)(Spanish) 10 Modelsof Warner Bothers Looney Toonscharacters. SiberianI was recently contacted byEugeny Fridrikh, a paperfolder in

Siberia. Eugeny has been apaperfolder for 13 years andrecently began an impressiveproject similar, in some ways, toScaffold. In December of 2001,Eugeny released the first issue ofa new electronic origamipublication called Siberian.

At just over half a yearold, Siberian has publishedarticles about the history oforigami, super-complex origami.Erotic origami, and origami on theweb. The magazine has profiledmany Western folders includingEric Joisel, Robert Lang, JeremyShafer, Marc Kirschenbaum,David Lister, Dave Brill andRonald Koh.

Each issue containsarticles (currently only in Russian),photos, drawings and diagramsfor a number of models. I havefound this magazine to be veryprofessional-looking and awonderful addition to the world oforigami. Like Scaffold, Siberianis a labor of love and has beenoffered to worldwide foldingcommunity free of charge.

Through e-mail, Eugenydiscovered the vast wealth oforigami that was previouslyalmost impossible to access in hishomeland because of lowaccessability and prohibitiveexpenses. The other Russianorigami publication, simply calledOrigami, concentrates mostly onchildren and teachers. Eugenytook this rarified origamiatmosphere and, by using e-mailand the Web, has done aremarkable job of begining to fillthe void. I wish him the best ofsuccess.

If you would like to checkout the back issues, there are twowebsites to go to. The sites arewww.siberiagami.narod.ru(Eugenys site) andwww.eSiberian.narod.ru (a pagecreated by one of his readers,Alex Kolesov).

SubmissionsScaffold wants you! Scaffoldneeds you! Scaffold wants toshow off your original designs. Ifyou have any original designs andwould like to share them with theworld, send them in to Scaffold. All designs will be used. Scaffoldwill not edit or censor any designsent in.

Designs may be sent ineither electronically, or on paper. Electronically is faster, but pleasetry to use a format that keeps thefile size down. Crease-fold

patterns are a great way to packmore models into a smaller space. Paper diagrams can be sent to: Joshua Koppel PO Box 641374 Chicago, IL 60664-1374 USAPaper diagrams will take a littlelonger for publication as they willhave to be scanned, but they willstill be used.

Please remember toinclude a statement of permissionwith all submissions stating that itis okay for your design to be usedin an upcoming issue of Scaffold. Thank you.

CartoonOrigamiCARTOON ORIGAMI by Halleis large-format soft-cover bookwith a wonderful collection ofmodels that very accuratelyportray various cartooncharacters. But the folder shouldbe warned that the realism ofcolor is obtained throughcompound origami.

The ten modelsdiagramed in the book are DaffyDuck, Sylvester, FoghornLeghorn, Roadrunner, Wille E.Coyote, Tasmanian Devil, TweetyBird, Speedy Gonzales, YosemiteSam, and Bugs Bunny. TheRoadrunner and Wille E. Coyotecan be seen at the website for theAsociacin Espaola dePapiroflexia at

    http://www.pajarita.org/index.asp.Some folders may have

seen diagrams of some of thesemodels in the past and might be alittle confused by this book. Thereason for that is that the modelswere designed by CarlosGonzlez Santamara but thebook credits them to Halle. These are bothe the same personwith Halle being the pen name orpseudonym.

This book was barely inmy possession before I foundmyself folding Tweety Bird (myWifes favorite). I found thediagrams to be clear and easy tofollow. There is no text in thediagrams other than the paper sizeand color. The diagrams are laidout in an interesting multi-trackformat that has pieces beingcompleted as they are needed tobe added to the whole. I wouldrecommend reading through thediagrams first and getting theproper paper sizes and colorsready before starting the actualfolding. Otherwise, these aremodels of moderate foldingcomplexity that result inwonderfully detailed figures.

Fans of these folds will bepleased by the end of the bookwhere it is announced thatCARTOON ORIGAMI 2 will becoming soon. It will includeKermit the Frog, Bert, Ernie,Asterix, Obelix, Dogmatx,Mickey Mouse, The PinkPanther, and Papa Smurf.

DesigningSonobe Units IIWhat is the non-standard unit? Well, the standard unit is asymmetrical construction thatresults in all joints being the same. Therefore, the non-standard unitis non-symmetrical and forms

varying joints(see Figure 1). One such unit isthe Sonobe:Asym 1 unit thatwas diagramedin the last issue.

    Non-standard unitsare legion in

number. The more variations thatone comes up with, the moreways they can be combined intonon-standard units. A singlevariation can be used to createone non-standard unit with thevariation applied to only one half. Two variations can create threenon-standard units and threevariations can combine into sixnon-standard units. Fifteenvariations can combine into 120

non-standard units(combinations = (Variations/2+ 0.5) x Variations). Nowfactor in the fact that the unitsthemselves can be joined to eachother in different ways (i.e. end Ato end A, end A to end B, andend B to end B).

If you have alreadycreated Sonobe unit variations, see if the variations you came upwith can be applied to only oneside. If they can, then youalready have the basis for somenon-standard units.

Back IssuesAll of the back issues of Scaffoldare still available. Thanks to thegenerosity of Emma, the issuescan be found online athttp://www.origami4you.com (justfollow the Scaffold link at thetop).

I am in the process ofconverting the back issues intoGIF files for the benefit of the fewwho cannot access PDF files. Inorder to be fair to all of thecontributors, each issue will haveits pages zipped so that the issuewill be complete. Therefore, those who wish to view the GIFformat will need an unzippingutility (there are a lot of them andthey tend to be free).

    The Models

The geometric track my mind iscurrently in has resulted in somemore geometric models in thisissue. I also created a newCobra just before being senddiagrams for a Cobra by JimAdams.

CobraThis is a nice Cobra sent in by JimAdams. It has a very pleasinglook and is quite easy to fold. More of Mr. Adamss creationscan be found athttp://members.aol.com/jeadams1.

Sonobe: SpearI have been working a lot withunits lately, so that is what I havebeen diagraming. Spear creates apattern of straight-sided bars witha point on one end (hence thename Spear).

Spear CubeThis cube is made from 24Sonobe: Spear units. This is oneof the first times I have set out tofold a 24-unit cube in stead of thesimpler 6-unit cube. I decided Ireally liked the look of it.

Simple CobraI designed this Cobra whileteaching a unit on animals inconjunction with our CitysZooray For Reading program. Iwas planning to teach a traditionalsnake when I saw this one hidingin the folds.
