What is SCADA? (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)

It is how utilities gain visibility, and then control, of their network assets. From a visibility / monitoring perspective:

Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) are located at utility assets in the field, connected to sensors, alarms, etc.

A communications mechanism connects them to the network operations centre.

A software program (HMI: human machine interface) to display the data, visible to the network management staff.

The RTUs are connected to devices that can ‘act’: switches, reclosers, pumps etc.

Control signals are sent from the network operations centre to the RTU which acts upon them to control the devices.



Why monitoring and control?

Electricity regulators financially reward electricity networks that improve their customer reliability by putting in smarter control systems.

Improved asset use, management and protection means improved performance: better network reliability through increased efficiency and security:
