What is SCADA? (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
It is how utilities gain visibility, and then control, of their network assets. From a visibility / monitoring perspective:
Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) are located at utility assets in the field, connected to sensors, alarms, etc.
A communications mechanism connects them to the network operations centre.
A software program (HMI: human machine interface) to display the data, visible to the network management staff.
The RTUs are connected to devices that can ‘act’: switches, reclosers, pumps etc.
Control signals are sent from the network operations centre to the RTU which acts upon them to control the devices.

Why monitoring and control?
Electricity regulators financially reward electricity networks that improve their customer reliability by putting in smarter control systems.
Improved asset use, management and protection means improved performance: better network reliability through increased efficiency and security:
Real time or on demand asset monitoring Early identification and isolation of faultsPreventative maintenance to extend asset lifeDecrease in quantity and duration of faults and outagesRapid response to weather events or malicious attacksReduce unscheduled site visits and maintenance costs
Performance improvement is delivered, brought about by improved information from SCADA system operation.

In combination with asset specific sensors and automation equipment, enables centralised remote asset management and life optimisation while reducing manpower requirements.
What does the product do for electricity?
Transformers are essential components of electricity transmission and distributions systems and are their most valuable individual assets – early warning saves money Automation equipment (reclosers, load break switches, and fault indicators) throughout the network are essential devices for providing maximum continuity of supplyThe product monitors the operation of this equipment sending reports, both routine and exceptions, to a control centers – commands may also be returned to certain field equipment for action.

When and where is monitoring and control being implemented?
At roll out of new infrastructure or replacement of end-of-life infrastructure, at which point monitoring / control capability is often built in as standard
Adding monitoring / control to existing assets that have not been monitored to date

SCADA PTMP Narrowband Radio for Electricity Utilities - Search for PartnersWhy use point-to-multipoint radio for monitoring and control?
Monitoring and control must be on demand or in real time
Eliminating dependence on a third party to provide and maintain communications is a requirement
Ensuring network security is essential Flexibility of communications
infrastructure is essential Reducing OPEX and minimizing whole
life cost are key business drivers

How do we enable smarter networks?
Considerations Solution
A solution that makes complete business and financial sense in the long term as networks evolve
Move to IPAttacks changingThreats maturing
Industry’s best securityDefence in depthNot just encryption
Enabling SECURITY:
Whole life cost20+ year cyclesLegacy equipment
Highly configurableEasy to manageAdvanced routing
Enabling EFFICIENCY:
Reduce faultsReduce maintenanceIdentify faults earlier

Security
Security is no longer physical, nor “security by obscurity”.
Open networks enable enhanced monitoring and control, but bring new vulnerabilities and opportunities for attack.
It is no longer just ex-employees, but also those who “hack for fun” as well as terrorists and state actors responsible for malicious attacks.
The result: service shutdowns, environmental concerns, direct impact on performance.

Threat Aprisa SR protection
Passive Eavesdropping AES-256 encryption ensures over the air data confidentiality
Proprietary wireless framing, FEC, interleaving and compression further modify over the
air data
Active Denial-of-Service Licensed radio spectrum and robust modulation protect against interference - either
intentional or unintentional
High performance direct conversion receiver further protects against interference
Segregated traffic flow enables node isolation, with VLAN and Layer 3 subnets and
protects against flooding
Active man-in-the-middle CCM-based data authentication protects data integrity (NIST special publication 800-38C)
Address filtering protects against masquerading
Management attack Secured management interface protects configuration
SNMPv3 encrypts radio network management data over the wired Ethernet interface

Standards-based, backwards compatible, future-proof
Investment in equipment needs to support the total life cost needed when forming budgets.
Both backwards compatible and future-proof
Supporting both legacy Serial RTUs and newer Ethernet enabled IEDs, protecting the legacy investment through transition over time to IP-based devices
Integrates seamlessly into existing network topologies, and is highly configurable to allow the network to evolve along with increasing monitoring and control requirements
Standards-based and supporting all relevant protocols, for long-term incorporation into SCADA networks
Plan for the future, protect the past. The best of both worlds.
