“The HSE continues to support and work with the NASC in the development of best industry practice for sca olding.” Joy Jones,HSE Principal Inspector National Construction Sector Safety Team

Many public and private organisations and an increasing number of local authorities are now specifying that the sca olding contractors they employ must be NASC members

“Included in its aims to improve health and safety on construction sites, CDM2007 requires that no one should be appointed or engaged on a project unless reasonable steps are taken to ensure their competence. APS supports the work of the NASC which aims to provide the construction industry with a sca olding workforce which is competent.” Brian B. Law, Chief Executive, Association for Project Safety (APS)

“As an industry we must continuously strive to reach the highest standards of safety in the workplace. The statistics show that whilst our industry is improving its overall health and safety we should not be satis ed until we can con dently send every worker home safely. The best practice guidance and standards provided by the NASC are invaluable towards that aim and the CIOB fully supports their work.” James Wates, President of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

Page 7: Sca group presentation march 2013

NASC Membership

The NASC is recognised as the national trade body for access and sca olding in the UK, producing a wide range of industry guidance for sca olding contractors, their operatives and their clients. Members of the NASC are strictly regulated to ensure a continuous high standard of sca olding practice.

By understanding what to expect from an NASC member you can obtain a high level of reassurance that when you employ an NASC member to carry out sca old work or supply sca old equipment you are making an informed decision, you know what to expect, your expectations are met and of course ultimately you are making the right choice.

Support for the NASC is evident throughout the industry the confederation operates in. Numerous pro-active main contractors, local authorities and clients are already insisting that their sca olding contractor must be an NASC member.

NASC members must ensure that: Operatives are fully trained Health and Safety regulations are complied with Public and Employer’s Liability Insurance cover is guaranteed All materials used conform to the highest standards, are regularly inspected and maintained Work is carried out in accordance with the relevant codes of practice All work is carried out by registered sca olders and is adequately supervised

As a full member of the NASC, SCA has been audited, and continues to be audited, to con rm that all systems comply to NASC regulations, and that ongoing work practices and standards are of the highest level.

“Rope Access has been proven to add safety, e ciency, and versatility to a number of job types and sites. Ultimately, with enough research and planning, the right Rope Access company will often exceed clients expectations and help develop long-term solutions to their needs.” SPRAT (Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians)

IRATA is the World’s leading Trade Association for Industrial Rope Access - anyone working from ropes in the UK should be IRATA accredited

“The approach adopted by the United Kingdom’s Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) may be summed up as the integration of rigorous work procedures and operator training. This, coupled with a growing statistical record of safe work, has led to a gradual reassessment of rope access in the workplace. It enables workers undertaking temporary work to access di cult places quickly and relatively cheaply, and to undertake inspections and a wide range of stabilising and other works.” Lyon Equipment Limited for the Health and Safety Executive

“Industrial rope access has been developed by IRATA in the last 25 years to a point where it is the chosen means of access for much of the work in the o shore oil and gas industry as well as a range of projects in construction, civil engineering, the built and natural environment and much more. Its success is based on thorough training and strict work guidelines that deliver an unrivalled safe working record year after year.” IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association)

Page 9: Sca group presentation march 2013

IRATA Membership

IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) was formed in the UK in the 1980’s to solve maintenance problems in the o shore oil and gas industry and is now recognised as the world’s leading authority on industrial rope access with over 200 international member companies. IRATA’s aims include promotion of high standards in safety, workmanship and working practices and audits are carried out annually to ensure members uphold their guidelines. They promote continuous improvement in all aspects of rope access including ongoing education and training.

Initially developed from techniques used in caving, rope answers the need for simple, safe and adaptable means of access, and can be far more cost e ective than other methods. In addition, it is incredibly safe - in 15 years of collating safety statistics, IRATA have recorded minimal serious injuries with an annually diminishing reportable incident rate of less than four per 100,000 hours worked. This is unrivalled across the industries in which IRATA operate and is a fundamental reason for the ongoing growth of rope access as a means of maintenance and inspection.

SCA’s IRATA accredited Rope Access team use the most advanced twin rope systems to provide safe access to any hard to reach area with minimal disruption to production. Working to IRATA’s strict guidelines, SCA Rope Access technicians always operate under the supervision of an experienced level 3 IRATA supervisor.

We understand that access is just the rst step and use only trained technicians to carry out works that they are quali ed to do. Using quali ed, accredited technicians means our Rope Access division provides the highest standard of expertise and quality craftsmanship.

As a member of IRATA, SCA Rope Access has been audited, and continues to be audited, to con rm that all systems comply to IRATA regulations, and that ongoing work practices and equipment are of the highest standards.

Health & Safety

The industrial services sector is, of course, a highly demanding and potentially hazardous one and SCA continually strives to ensure the utmost levels of safety in all its operations. The SCA Group has achieved and maintained an exemplary safety track record throughout all disciplines thanks to a rigid control system and a continued high standard of working.

SCA has a permanent Health & Safety Advisor, and our senior management has a wealth of experience in the Health and Safety eld. We also contract the services of an independent national Health & Safety consultancy group, and undertake an intensive audit of all of SCA’s xed sites on a monthly basis to ensure the highest of safety standards and “Best Practices” are maintained. The above statistics demonstrate and con rm SCA’s commitment to Health & Safety,

as these are approximately 30% lower than the National Average as published by the NASC.

Marine Sca olding

SCA Marine Sca olding has grown from fairly modest beginnings to become the market leader in the Ship Repair industry. An opportunity recognised by the existing directors in the 1990’s, Marine Sca olding quickly became SCA’s core business and focus, and led to the business achieving partnering agreements with the A&P Group and BAE Surface Fleet, positioning SCA in all the major UK ship yards. This allowed SCA to expand further in their chosen sector and work for not only A&P and BAE, but also complete contracts for DML, Cunard, Carnival, Babcock, Pendennis, Cammell Laird and many more.

SCA Marine Sca olding were awarded these contracts on the basis of cost saving, quality and safety performance, three main areas identi ed as key to further progression and success of the division. Working closely with the client, SCA has repeatedly o ered the ability to keep project values down by becoming part of the initial planning phase, whilst at all times maintaining a high level of customer service and not making sacri ces to safe working methods.

The Division remains fully committed to exceeding customer expectations through robust health and safety procedures, high sta retention and ever-evolving internal training programs for all management and employees.
