    SCA Group Newsletter

    January 2016

    IN THIS ISSUE

At SCA we embrace all things Christmassy, and we had great fun on Friday 18th December taking part in our own Secret Santa, and raising some money for charity by getting involved with the ITV Text Santa campaign.

A simple text message was enough to raise £5 or £10, and SCA joined in the millions of people across the UK taking part to help the charities Macmillan Cancer Support, Make- A-Wish UK and Save the Children raise some much needed funds. We had a great time taking part, and we hope you did too!

So with the Festive Season over, we wanted to take this opportunity to wish all of our staff, clients, suppliers and friends a Prosperous New Year, and we hope that you all had a very peaceful Christmas and are embracing the opportunity of a new year like we are.

This past year has been one of transition for the business with previous Managing

Director, Steve King, taking a small backwards step to become our new Chairman, although his passion for the business remains as strong as ever! Existing Director, Lee Bennett, has now taken over at the helm, and is relishing the role and the opportunity to take the business forwards and bring further successes to the table.

Our Marine Divisions remain exceptionally strong and well-positioned, and our venture north of the border in Govan is keeping us plenty busy!

But our Commercial Scaffolding and Multi- Discipline Divisions are where we are experiencing real growth. Our activities across the region are growing at a significant pace, and the provisions we are able to offer are continuously expanding and diversifying which gives the business a solid platform for the future.

We hope you enjoy our latest newsletter, and should you require more information about everything we do, visit our website at www.sca-group.com

SCA’s Rope Access Team We have a team of vastly experienced and qualified technicians ready to carry out any number of services from cleaning through to maintenance, and even landscaping.

SCA’s very own Pat Murphy is at it again and is seen here receiving yet another award for his dedication to Health & Safety practices – Congratulations to Pat and his team!

It seems that Pat Murphy is leading a crusade towards best health and safety practices on all SCA sites and has picked up yet another award in recognition of this, on this occasion from SCA’s client, Vinci Construction UK.

Pictured below accepting his award with Vinci representative, and right, receiving thanks and recognition from SCA Health & Safety officer Garry Dow, Pat has been bestowed the award for the vigilance he

displayed on site, which may well have prevented serious injury to the parties involved.

Instead of passing the potential danger by and ignoring the issue, Pat recognised the unsafe practice taking place on site by the third party, and brought it to the immediate attention of the persons involved, and then to the client, which led to the potentially harmful actions ceasing straight away. Had Pat not acted as he did, there was a good chance that injury could have been caused in this instance, and his due care and attention was recognised by the client by way of this safety award.

SCA’s Health & Safety officer, Garry Dow, expressed his pride at the actions of Pat Murphy and encouraged his exemplary attitude and performance to be a shining example to all. “I would love to be handing out high praise and awards all day long if it meant that everyone was being as vigilant as this all the time”, commented Garry.

SCA’s Commercial Scaffolding team have received recognition in the Pride In The Job 2015 Awards from Barratt David Wilson Southampton.

The Pride in the Job Awards scheme is run by the NHBC (National House-Building Council) and recognises individual excellence in the field of new home construction. The NHBC is the UK’s leading standard-setting body and provider of warranty and insurance for new homes, and works closely within the industry to continually improve standards and provide consumer protection from home-buyers.

Pride in the Job is the only UK-wide competition that is dedicated to recognising

and rewarding the contribution made by site managers who strive to echo the sentiments of the Council and achieve the highest standards in house-building. The award has been pivotal in increasing the standards of construction for over thirty-five years and is the highest industry accolade that can be bestowed upon the recipient. It is representative of the success of the individual site manager primarily, but also of his team and associated trades.

The SCA Group pays tribute to both Phil Cripps and Jim McCann of Barratt David Wilson Southampton for being two such recipients of this prestigious award, and we take pride in our association with Phil and Jim and the success we have jointly achieved on the Seacrest Gardens and Hawthorn Meadows new build sites.

The SCA Group has a long-standing relationship with Barratt David Wilson and has worked on a number of large construction projects with them, and this is further testament to our performance in the commercial environment, and our desire to achieve excellence in every aspect of our work.

    NEWS STORIES

SCA’s Marine Operations go from strength to strength in the UK Our scaffolders can be found in dockyards up and down the country performing invaluable access services

Fixed Site Management SCA can provide a full package for managing fixed site locations with multiple trades

Rope Access Technicians in Action Our highly qualified Rope Access operatives are working across the UK on a variety of projects involving repairs, protection, maintenance and much, much more.

At SCA, we take great pride in our exemplary Health & Safety record, and our dedication to continuous improvement, the protection of our employees, and the management of risk in our working environment.

SCA has come a long way from humble beginnings, but the necessity to cascade a clear, workable Health & Safety Policy throughout the company has always been at the forefront of our operations.

As part of our ongoing strategy and thirst for Health & Safety excellence, SCA has recruited Garry Dow (TECHIOSH) as the new company HSEQ Manager. Garry has been tasked with taking SCA to the next level of Policy & Procedure Management, Safety Implementation, and Employee Training Programs for our continuous improvement in all aspects of our work.

A number of existing policies have been updated and improved, and a new ‘Place of Work Risk Assessment’ incentive has been launched (amongst others), all with the aim of keeping our employees as safe as possible in potentially dangerous environments.

And it seems as though Garry’s hard work and dedication is paying off already with safety awards not just being received by the company, but more encouragingly, being awarded to employees performing above and beyond the normal call of duty.

Pat Murphy (see story above) continues to be a shining example to all of his colleagues, and high praise was bestowed upon two other SCA employees of late for their vital intervention that stopped a serious fire breaking out. Tony Brooks and Rob Billinghurst noticed a smoldering lighting

tower in the dock bottom and averted a larger incident by isolating the tower and reporting the hazard immediately. As the tower eventually caught fire, widespread damage was prevented by their actions, and the outbreak was quickly brought under control. Well done to all of you!

    “Read All About It!”

Our dedication to Health & Safety, and our hands on approach to promoting a positive culture throughout the company cannot be questioned, and our qualifications, audited memberships and accreditations are testament to this.

And if you don’t believe us, you can read it for yourself in the upcoming March edition of “Building Design & Construction Magazine” scheduled to be released in March 2016. The BDC Magazine is a well-supported publication and the article focuses on how SCA has established itself as a leading Multi- Discipline Contractor that has a robust Health & Safety work ethic and an unwavering attitude to employee protection.

Garry Dow, who was interviewed as part of this excellent article, is excited that SCA gets the opportunity to showcase the company’s abilities and Health & Safety record, and hopes that you will all take the time to have a read. No doubt he will provide a reminder for you nearer the time!
