Strength of ties
` Analysis of social networks is a TOOL that helps to linkmacro and micro levels of sociological theory
` How it is shown?
` By noticing these factors:
` Weak ties have cohesive power
` strength of DYADIC (relating or based on two) ties
` Small well defined groups
` Social structure is segmented` Relation between groups
` *Primary groups/secondary groups

Primary group
` A primary group is a typically small social group whose membersshare close, personal, enduring relationships. These groups aremarked by members' concern for one another, and shared activitiesand culture.
` Examples include family, childhood friends, and highly influential
social groups. You do not choose to be part of these groups you justare. Primary groups play an important role in the development ofpersonal identity.
` A primary group is a group in which one exchanges implicit items, such as love, caring, concern, animosity, support, and such. Examples,of these would be family groups, love relationships, crisis supportgroups, church groups and such. Relationships formed in primarygroups are often long-lasting and goals in themselves.
` They also are often psychologically comforting to the individualsinvolved and provide a source of support and encouragement.

Secondary groups:
` People in a secondary group interact on a less personallevel than in a primary group, and their relationships aretemporary rather than long lasting. Since secondarygroups are established to perform functions, peoplesroles are more interchangeable.
` A secondary group is one you have chosen to be a partof. They are based on interests and activities. They arewhere many people make can meet close friends orpeople they would just call acquaintances.
` Secondary groups are groups in which on exchangesexplicit commodities, such as labor for wages, services forpayments, and such. Examples of these would beemployment, vendor-to-client relationships, and such.

method for measuring social relationships.)

` Strength of an interpersonal tie:` It is linear combination of 4 things:
Amount of Time
Emotional intensity
Intimacy(mutual confiding) Reciprocal services
These 4 are independent of each other but highly
intracorrelated.
Stronger ties have larger time commitments

Weak ties and community organization
` Its important to have personal ties in a community becausewithout it a community cannot form nor have a leader
` Issues like trust. Convincing people to believe etc will arise
` People rarely act on mass media information unless it is
transmitted through personal ties` No matter how much you advertise by radio, leaflets etc
` Intermediaries at certain stages are important
` A community cannot be completely partitioned into group or
cliques and none outside` Communities organize for common goals and to mobilize
resources easily

` Ethnic , cultural and other differences in groups or cliquesbut most important phenomena is COHESION
` Clusterability has 2 facets:
` Strong and weak ties are considered positive
` Absent ties are considered negative

what doesTRANSITIVE mean and how it
applies in social groups?
` Logic & Mathematics Of or relating to a relationshipbetween three elements such that if the relationshipholds between the first and second elements and
between the second and third elements, it necessarily
holds between the first and third elements.
` Example:
` Arish knows farah
` Farah knows asqaf
` So arish is related to asqaf

` According to theory of child development` Children develop stronger ties with increasing age (due to
grade level and degree of transitivity)
