f you have been on campus lately or have visited the SBU website, you will have seen our

mission statement. As one of the newest staff members to arrive on campus, I immediately

sensed that SBU’s faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni truly embrace this as a personal

mission. As a marketing and communications specialist, I tend to see the world in terms of

products and their benefits to the consumer. I have quickly learned that the product at SBU is

a first-rate education. The many benefits of this caring, Christian academic community are

what I am excited about promoting to our customers or students!

SBU is a hidden gem here in the Ozarks. I am eager and anxious

to begin telling the stories. Have you heard about the successes of

our students and alumni in academics, art, business, computers,

debate, music, and athletics? Have you heard about the accomplish-

ments of our faculty? Have you heard about our staff commitment

to excellent customer service? Have you heard about the servant

leadership exhibited during the many mission projects at home

and abroad that have been undertaken by SBU people? If not, you

soon will!

Do you have a story to tell about SBU? Has the university

touched you or your family in a special way? Has the perspective of

a Christian education changed your life in a positive way? Please

share your story with us. You can help us spread the word about the

many benefits of an SBU education and a community that cares.

As I work to develop an integrative marketing plan for our uni-

versity, I will keep the mission statement by my side. My commit-

ment is to measure everything we do in communicating the message

of SBU against our mission. What I have learned so far is that we

have good news to tell! In fact, you will read about some of it in this issue of SBU Life.

As SBU faculty and staff members endeavor to live out our mission and model servant

leadership to our students, we look toward Christ as the perfect example of spreading the

Good News. Ultimately, if we keep Christ in focus, we will be successful in our mission of

preparing students to be servant leaders in a global society, and we will be successful in the Great

Commission, too.

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to

Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. (Acts 1:8, NKJV) n

arch madness is past, spring is in full-bloom here in Bolivar, and our hearts are filled with grati-tude for God’s many blessings on SBU. I am especially pleased to announce that we have metand surpassed our goals for the Partners in Excellence campaign. A total of $62.5 million has been committed to SBU during the Partners in Excellence campaign, the most successfulcampaign in the university’s history. As a result, you might not recognize the SBU campus the

next time you visit! The success of the campaign has made it possible for us to complete several constructionprojects and beautify our grounds. What a tremendous difference the campaign gifts have made to ouruniversity’s quality of life and learning!

Projects that have been completed as a result of the campaign include:n The Jane and Ken Meyer Wellness and Sports Centern The Jester Learning and Performance Center n The Plaster Athletic Centern The Dwain and Donna Hammons Center for Facilities Excellence, which provides

space for the physical plant staffn The John Bryant Tennis Centern Beasley, Landon, and Leslie Hall renovationsn Purchase of Maple Tree Apartmentsn Renovation of The Casebolt Science and Library building on the Stufflebam

Campus into apartmentsn The Myrtle Glass Learning Center-Mountain View Campusn The Gott Center for Christian Higher Education-Salem Campus n The Killian Health Centern The Awad Memorial Garden n The Allen Walk of Life and many other landscaping and parking lot projects

Another blessing as a result of the Partners in Excellence campaign is the continuinggrowth of the endowment. Endowment growth is important as it will enhance theuniversity’s ability to build a better future.

The immediate future looks bright as our growth prospects for next year’s incomingclass are very encouraging. To date we have received more than 1,300 applications foradmission. To put that number into perspective, we received a total of 991 applications last year!

I feel incredibly blessed to represent an institution that shows its Christian faith by investing in the nextgeneration of servant leaders. I also feel blessed to be part of a university that has as the heart of its mission adesire to remain a Christ-centered, caring academic community. At the Founders’ Day Chapel in March,Dr. Dave Martin, BA 1971, spoke about the ministry of our students while he was an undergraduate hereat SBU. By their living as a model of Christ’s compassion and befriending a struggling student, they helpedwin Dr. Martin’s heart for Christ. He is now a living example of SBU’s impact on young lives as he pastorsConcord Baptist Church in St. Louis.

As you read through the stories in this issue of SBU Life, keep in mind that we are very excited about thesuccesses of our current students, faculty and staff, but we are most joyful when we hear stories about thesuccesses of our alumni. It is the stories of hearts won to Christ by SBU graduates and students witnessingon the mission field and on our own campus that make the effort of campaigns like Partners in Excellenceworthwhile. My wife, Judy, and I thank you for being a partner in the excellent work undertaken by theSouthwest Baptist University family.

nter his courts with praise. This phrasegraces a poster in SBU Head BasketballCoach Jeff Guiot’s office and would seem tobe the theme for the team as they haveheard the rafters raised in the Meyer SportsCenter game after game this season. The

Bearcats praise-worthy team has praise for their fans andcoaches as well, but most importantly, they praise Godfor their victories on and off the court.

In a recent interview, Senior Deon Davis, LosAngeles, Calif., said “God has definitely played a role inour season. One of the verses for us has been ‘I can doall things through Christ who strengthens me,’Philippians 4:13. That carried us through a few gameswe shouldn’t have won, but we won on last-second

shots. We’ve got unity on the team. We don’t have prob-lems being against each other.” Around the team room, all the players nodded as Davis acknowledged God’shand on their team.

Senior Frans Steyn, Pretoria, So. Africa, had a morepersonal testimony to share. “I believe God led me herefor a reason. I got saved at my old school, but I was onand off again. I got here and saw people living a lifecommitted to Christ. Since I’m married, I don’t get tohang out with the guys as much, but I still feel like fami-ly and one of the guys. They even came to see me getbaptized. Here, I’ve made a real commitment to Christ.”

Junior Owen Newman, Cave Junction, Or., alsoshared from the heart about what God has done in hislife while at SBU. “I came from a background where

religion was forced on me. I tend to doubt things. Iwas skeptical of the Bible. I think God brought mehere to open me to the Bible and help me see thetruth – introduce me to the Light. Everybody sins, but I wasn’t walking in Jesus’ footsteps. At Biblestudy at Coach’s house on Sunday nights, we have alot of great discussions there and over lunch. I gotto see Franz get baptized at Wellspring Church.”

Bolivar native, freshman Colt Blair said he feltblessed to be a part of theteam, too. “When I wasdeciding on college, at first Ididn’t want to come here, Iwanted to get away fromhome. Being close to homehas been a blessing, becausemy parents got to come toevery game. You’re not goingto find a better atmosphere toplay ball than here.”

Coach Guiot’s approach tocoaching basketball has beencriticized for its intensity, buthe also earned praise from histeam members. “The coach-ing staff really cares for us,”said Senior Sheldon Pace, LosAngeles, Calif. “You don’t getthat at other schools. Cominghere you feel the coaches carethat your head is in the rightdirection.”

Newman said, “I’ve heard[criticism] about the intensity ofcoach at games, but we know heloves and cares about us.” Steynadded, “‘Play hard’ was coach’smain thing. He’d say, ‘Do theright thing. We can’t control theoutcome.’ Coach measures suc-cess not by us winning thenational championship but by uscoming to Christ.”

SBU fans’ loyal support was acknowledged by allof the team members. Davis said, “The Sixth ManClub, the alumni, and everyone who supports us,who welcomes us into their homes, they’re not justconcerned with what we do on court. They’re con-cerned about us being Christian. We appreciate allthat’s been done for us.”

In a separate interview, Coach Guiot laughedwhen his on-court intensity was mentioned, butthen he turned serious. “When you go to war, the

general doesn’t say, ‘Hey, bend down, they’re shoot-ing at you.’ He yells, “Get down!’ It’s the same oncourt,” Guiot said. “Sometimes I need to get theirattention. The team knows that everybody caredabout everybody out there. We built trust andgenuine care.”

Guiot, too, praised the SBU fans for their sup-port this season, “Our fans have been second tonone. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of

something this special? The student body knowshow much the athletes appreciate their support. The athletes really appreciate them. We came upshort on our last game. We lost two of our seniorswith injuries, but God has been with us this season. He has really blessed us.”

Guiot said the team members have a requiredBible study every Sunday night at 9 p.m.“Everybody contributes. Everybody speaks. Thecoaches learn as much as the players. We’ve had areally special year, but 100 years from now, if we’re

not all in heaven playing basketball, it won’t matter. You can get caught up in the season in our basket-ball world. Games like Sunday [on March 12 whenthe SBU Bearcats lost to Northwest Missouri StateUniversity Bearcats in the NCAA semifinals by ascore of 83-80.] help us keep our priorities in line.”

“We want to grow spiritually not just athletically. The spiritual growth makes me prouder than our27-5 record. The SBU basketball program was

down when I interviewedhere. They asked me if wecould win as the only privateChristian school in a state-funded school league. I said,‘We’ve got God on our side, and you’re asking me if wecan win!?’ My God is biggerthan this league.”

Guiot said he felt theHoly Spirit gave the teamcertain scriptures for the year. For accountability: As ironsharpens iron, a friend sharp-ens a friend. (Proverbs 27: 7,NLT). For obedience: Youwill be blessed wherever yougo, both in coming and ingoing. (Deuteronomy 28:6,NLT). For faith: So, you see,it is impossible to please Godwithout faith. Anyone whowants to come to him mustbelieve that there is a God andthat he rewards those who sin-cerely seek him. (Hebrews11:6, NLT). For faith with-out works: So you see, it isn’tenough just to have faith.Faith that doesn’t show itselfby good deeds is no faith atall—it is dead and useless(James 2:17, NLT).

Guiot said. “It has been a special year frombeginning to end. God was with us. For next year,we pray every day that God brings our team togeth-er. This year He brought the team from SouthAfrica, Los Angeles, New York, local kids. We wantall His blessings for next year. I could give you a tes-timonial for each kid that’s here. You’ve got to bespiritually dead to not have seen God at work herethis year.” n
