Coaching Tools for Personal Transformation: Stepping into Performance Using NLP

Coaching is the process of helping individuals and teams to perform at the peak of their abilities. It involves drawing out people’s strengths, helping them to bypass personal barriers and limits in order to achieve their personal bests, and facilitating them to function more effectively as members of a team. The skills and tools of NLP are uniquely suited for promoting effective coaching. NLP’s focus on well-formed outcomes, its foundation in modeling exceptional performers, and its ability to produce step-by-step processes to promote excellence, makes it one of the most important and powerful resources for committed coaches. This talk will provide an overview of how the principles and skills of NLP can be used to coach individuals and teams to integrate different thinking styles in order to more effectively define and reach desired states.

Accelerating Organizational Transformation: The Cadre Approach atCisco Systems

John Kotter, in his seminal article “Leading Change: Why Transformation Efforts Fail” (Harvard Business Review, 1995) points out that companies that fail to achieve their change objectives also fail to understand the importance of a powerful guiding coalition. Change management literature underscores that leveraging early adopters is a critical ingredient in the success of any large scale change effort.

In 2003, Cisco’s Customer Advocacy organization embarked upon a massive reengineering of its foundational systems. These systems, used by 4,000 engineers all over the world, are used to resolve 321,000 customer issues per month, provide logistical support to 650 parts depots in 120 countries. The impact of this change reaches across organizational boundaries and impacts employees, customers, and partners.

This session will present a case study showing how Cisco harnessed a coalition of change champions to accelerate this transformational effort. The program has been lauded by the CEO as the most successful change accomplished to date at Cisco. The focus will be on the design and implementation of this approach.

About Barrie Novak

Barrie Novak is Director, HR Strategy & Planning for Cisco System’s Customer Advocacy organization. She led the creation and launch of the change champion concept at Cisco as well as was a lead designer of the Cisco Change Roadmap, (CCR) the change management framework now used company-wide.

Prior to joining Cisco in 2001, Barrie was Senior Vice President, HR & Communications for a NYC-based Internet start-up. Previously, she was Vice President, HR for Aramark Corporation in Philadelphia. Barrie spent 8 years at MCI Telecommunications as Senior Director, Executive and Organizational Consulting where she was responsible for change management and organization effectiveness. She holds executive certifications from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (HR Planning), Marshall School of Business, USC (Organization Design), and Cornell University (Large Scale Change Management). Barrie has an MSW from Washington University and a BSW from the University of Missouri. She lives in Saratoga, CA. (Contact: [email protected]

Innovation and Business Transformation: Ignite the Genius Within

Innovation is the key to business transformation and organizational alignment. Machines don’t innovate, people do. How do we get people who are stressed out, lost, de-motivated and unchallenged to innovate? External tools and processes that are brought to squeeze out innovation and commitment in employees are temporarily effective, if at all. In 15 years experience working with organizations and executives, three things have been most effective.

• Aligning personal aspirations with organizational goals helps to bring out the best for employees and the organization

• Good questions allow employees to tap into their own genius and make their tacit knowledge explicit

• Learning is what we breathe in and innovation is what we breathe out. Getting people to engage in their own learning allows them to innovate, be passionate, and commit to their own transformation through which organizational transformation occurs.

There are four questions that are extremely valuable when igniting the genius within:

1. What is my North Star (highest aspiration) that ignites both my natural genius and that of my organization (family, company, community or educational institution)?

2. What is my Core Incompetence? Where is my foot nailed to the floor?

3. What triggers my energy when I feel sapped? What excites rejuvenates and regenerates energy in me? In other words, what is my key Energy Trigger?

4. What kinds of activities, mindsets, and processes drain my energy? What kind of Alarm System do I have to set so that I can be effective, successful and joyful?

In this talk, Prasad will share examples and case studies with key client companies that have ignited the genius within, demonstrating business transformation and leaps in innovation.

Innovation and Business Transformation: Ignite the Genius Within

About Prasad Kaipa

Prasad Kaipa has been a consultant, CEO advisor and and principal, Kaipa Group for 15 years. His activities in business transformation, personal change and innovation began in 1990 after a stint as a research fellow at Apple University. Until then, he was a professor (at the university of Utah) and product marketing manager (Apple) and focused on tangible and measurable hard skills. His Ph.D. in Physics and his research background at the University of Utah and the Indian Institute of Technology equipped him with a curious and inquiring perspective and fascination with scientific breakthroughs which have shaped his thinking. Explorations with artists, scientists, Nobel laureates, and sports personalities in the areas of how people think and learn, began at Apple where Prasad was tasked to design tools that augment human intelligence. Over time, Prasad returned to his roots -- Vedas, Upanishads and other Indian spiritual literature as they brought a holistic and a different perspective to learning and thinking. These three disciplines — business, science and technology, and spirituality, have given Prasad three different lenses. At the intersection of these three disciplines is the potential to ignite the genius within — for individuals as well as organizations. Prasad works with Fortune 500 companies like Disney, Sun, Raytheon, Ford, Pepsi, NavTech, BAE Systems, Sasken, Pacific Bell. He also assists entrepreneurial companies like Aztec, Mastek, Olixir and VARstreet. He is a part-time faculty in the areas of Organizational Systems, Creativity and Innovation and Developmental Psychology at the Saybrook Graduate School. Prasad is currently on the board of directors/trustees for the Society for Organizational Learning (created around Peter Senge’s learning organization concepts), TiE Institute for Entrepreneurs, Aankhen, the Hindu University of North America, and Catalyst.

Prasad’s book ‘Discontinuous Learning: Reflections on Aligning Life and Work’ will be published in 2005. Many of his articles, book, pyramids and tools are available on the Internet: www.prasadkaipa.com, www.mithya.com, and www.selfcorp.com. Contact: [email protected].

[B] 11:30 Program Setting Client Engagement Precedents Questions about when client work begins range from a verbal hallway request to a signed contract. And while its great to know your client wants to get going, other things might have been decided (or assumed!) as well. Entry is a famously brief stage for many internal and external practitioners. In this session, we will look at Entry, how it might be approached, the role it plays in your work and what advantage there is to paying closer attention to it. You will have a chance to try out an Entry agenda that sets positive engagement precedents while helping you assess work and work relationship dynamics. Internal and external consultants, from those just starting to others who are more advanced, are all welcome to attend.

Why Organizations Can’t Seem to Solve Problems

Executives and managers routinely report that they spend from ½ to ¾ of their time solving problems, and yet problem solving remains defined by a decades-old paradigm that assumes any problem can be tackled with an engineering mind set. And employees more often than not report that the biggest problem they face in doing their job well is “my boss,”(not competitors, technologies, market challenges, or work processes).

The common difficulty of implementing strategic plans suggests that even if we’re good at solving problems, we’re not as good at choosing the right problems to solve.

Clearly we need to re-think how to solve problems in a complex organizational environment.

This short talk will highlight the major obstacles to robust problem solving in organizations, and outline what would be required if we realized that problem solving is our most important business process.

About Jerry Talley

Jerry is a veteran of 3 careers. He started his professional life on the faculty of Stanford’s Department of Sociology, where he taught for 18 years. Overlapping that experience, he also maintained a practice as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. For the last 20+ years he has provided organizational development consulting to companies here in Silicon Valley.

His early experience with organizational assessments allowed him to learn from over 200 client engagements. Based on the knowledge gleaned from so many contracts, he launched a new practice in 1998 helping companies with corporate visioning, strategic planning, and work process design.

His current focus is problem solving in an organizational environment. His web site (www.ProblemSolving2.com) details the outline of the model. An overview of his total practice is available at www.JLTalley.com.

The Practical Applications of Humor in Presentations

Humor is a powerful leadership tool. It can command attention, create rapport and make ideas more memorable. It can also relieve tension, defuse conflict and motivate people, if it’s used appropriately. Whether you’re talking to one person or one thousand, a message coated with humor can peel away resistance, build goodwill and get an audience on your side. This presentation will show how simple, proven humor techniques can enable you to become a more effective leader -- even if you can’t tell a joke. It will focus on humor skills used by U.S. presidents to win approval, change minds, deflect criticism, improve morale and communicate a vision.

About Malcolm Kushner

Since 1982, he has trained thousands of managers, executives and professionals how to gain a competitive edge with humor.
